Book Synopsis Groove: An Aesthetic of Measured Time by : Mark Abel
Download or read book Groove: An Aesthetic of Measured Time written by Mark Abel and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-09-18 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the relationship between music and time? How does musical rhythm express our social experience of time? In Groove: An Aesthetic of Measured Time, Mark Abel explains the rise to prominence in Western music of a new way of organising rhythm: groove. He provides a historical account of its emergence around the turn of the twentieth century, and analyses the musical components which make it work. Tracing the influence of key philosophical arguments about the nature of time on musical aesthetics, Mark Abel draws on materialist interpretations of art and culture to challenge those, like Adorno, who criticise popular music’s metrical regularity. He concludes that groove does not simply reflect the temporality of contemporary society, but, by incorporating abstract time into its very structure, is capable of effecting a critique of it.

Book Synopsis The Groove Scriptures by : Createspace Independent Pub
Download or read book The Groove Scriptures written by Createspace Independent Pub and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-02-17 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2007, I was taken into captivity for crimes against a society not my own. When I woke to my first day of imprisonment, I was a much wiser man. I felt refreshed but ten years older. I woke to a dignified enlightenment that I am certain I was unaware of only a day sooner. It is difficult to explain the cosmic feeling of sudden enlightenment that occurred during my sleep, however, from that day forward, I knew. I knew that my sacrifices landed me in the cell I woke up in. I knew it was my destiny. I got up and walked to my desk and wrote, 'The Groove Scriptures, ' at the top of a piece of paper. From there, I wrote everything that came to me in my sleep. It didn't come to me in a dream that some might characterize as a vision; it came to me more as a sudden epiphany downloaded. I just knew. I finished delivering The Groove Scriptures to paper on July 16, 2007. When they were complete, I took to the task of spreading the word. I've never met a proud Hoover who has met the system of principles and beliefs in disdain or with total disagreement. My conscience was awakened to the reality that was my own. I was willing to live for, die for, and risked being captured or killed for the Groove! I made the ultimate sacrifices for the Groove and recognized that I had done so since becoming one with the Groove. I recognized that the Groove took the place in my life that God took in a monotheist's life. I recognized also that I was given this wisdom as a gift to keep giving. I recognized that I had been assigned by the energy that is the Groove, to speak for the Groove and spread the word to other Hoovers Grooving in the Groove so that they will know the truth and better focus their energy that is Grooving. I am a wiser man now. I am a stronger man now. Salute to the Groove for which I pray thanks. One Nation Under The Groove
Book Synopsis Finding the Groove by : Robert Gelinas
Download or read book Finding the Groove written by Robert Gelinas and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2009-05-26 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'A jazz-shaped faith ... balances freedom with boundaries, the individual with the group, and traditions with the pursuit of what might be. I have discovered in jazz a way of thinking, living, communicating---a way of being ... a groove.' You don't have to be a jazz musician, or even a jazz connoisseur, for this book to speak to you. If you love God and his Word, and if you've longed to follow Jesus Christ outside the slick corporate structures that some American churches erect, this book is for you. If you want to discover a freer, more genuine expression of Christianity, Finding the Groove will be music to your ears, your heart, and your mind. Using brilliant metaphors from the world of jazz, Robert Gelinas reveals breathtaking possibilities for the body of Christ. What might a 'jazz-shaped faith' look like---and how could it help us fulfill the message of the gospel in a way no method, movement, or structured program ever could? How can understanding the beauty of jazz help you better understand Jesus, his vision for those who follow him, and his heartbeat for a world that is badly out of sync? But this book isn't about music. It is about a passionate, biblical, fully integrated way of looking at life and salvation that will free you to find your own unique groove in the kingdom of God.

Download or read book Groove Theory written by Tony Bolden and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2020-10-21 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tony Bolden presents an innovative history of funk music focused on the performers, regarding them as intellectuals who fashioned a new aesthetic. Utilizing musicology, literary studies, performance studies, and African American intellectual history, Bolden explores what it means for music, or any cultural artifact, to be funky. Multitudes of African American musicians and dancers created aesthetic frameworks with artistic principles and cultural politics that proved transformative. Bolden approaches the study of funk and black musicians by examining aesthetics, poetics, cultural history, and intellectual history. The study traces the concept of funk from early blues culture to a metamorphosis into a full-fledged artistic framework and a named musical genre in the 1970s, and thereby Bolden presents an alternative reading of the blues tradition. In part one of this two-part book, Bolden undertakes a theoretical examination of the development of funk and the historical conditions in which black artists reimagined their music. In part two, he provides historical and biographical studies of key funk artists, all of whom transfigured elements of blues tradition into new styles and visions. Funk artists, like their blues relatives, tended to contest and contextualize racialized notions of blackness, sexualized notions of gender, and bourgeois notions of artistic value. Funk artists displayed contempt for the status quo and conveyed alternative stylistic concepts and social perspectives through multimedia expression. Bolden argues that on this road to cultural recognition, funk accentuated many of the qualities of black expression that had been stigmatized throughout much of American history.

The contributors, who include Mavis Beayton, Stella Bruzzi, Sara Cohen, Sean Cubitt, Keith Negus and Will Straw, debate how popular music performers, subcultures, fans and texts construct and deconstruct `masculine' and `feminine' identities. Using a wide range of case studies, from Mick Jagger to Riot Grrrls, they demonstrate that there is nothing `natural', permanent or immovable about the regime of sexual difference which governs society and culture. Sexing the Groove also includes a comprehensive annotated bibliography for further reading and research into gender and popular music.
