Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Manuals of Church Doctrines Some little time ago the Eastern Church Associa tion published a short account of the Teaching of the Russian Church. Now, owing to the kind ness of Mr. Duckworth, we are able to place at the disposal of our members a similar work on the Greek branch of the Eastern Church. This account has the advantage of being some what more authoritative, as Mr. Duckworth has an intimate personal knowledge of the inner workings of the Greek Church, and has put before us the current teaching in the Catechisms drawn up for present use. The first point that we notice is the great pains which is taken that all members of the Orthodox Church may have an accurate knowledge of the teaching of the body to which they belong. It is clear that if the system which is described in these pages is carried out, the charge of ignorance which is commonly brought against the oriental churches cannot be for a moment sustained. The Greek layman must know a great deal more about his Church than the average English layman. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The body about which this book treats always calls itself the Orthodox Eastern Church, and in the East we call them Orthodox and they call us Catholics (unless when they mean to be rude), and no one thinks for a moment that either uses these names except as technical terms. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Organization of the Orthodox Eastern Churches The object of this pamphlet is to provide a convenient outline, for reference purposes, of the Constitutions of the various autonomous Churches which are included in the Holy Orthodox Eastern Church. No attempt has been made to give any historical account of these Churches, but a few general remarks may not be out of place here. The order of precedence at present observed amongst them is as follows: 1, Constantinople; 2, Alexandria; 3, Antioch; 4, Jerusalem; 5, Russia; 6, Cyprus; 7, Karlowitz; 8, Sinai; 9, Montenegro; 10, Greece; 11, Hermannstadt; 12, Bukowina and Dalmatia; 13, Servia; 14, Roumania; 15, Bulgaria. But in any General Council the heads of each of these Churches would have an equal vote. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eighteen Centuries of the Orthodox Greek Church Dr. Neale might have added, that to write a history of the down-trodden Greek Church is also, in one sense, an unwelcome task; for it necessitates controversy; to me religious controversy is distasteful; and, as the lengthen ing shadows of the evening of life warn me that this may be the last which I shall write, I should have preferred a work of a different character. The conflicts for supremacy between Constantinople and Rome, and the arrogance and injustice of the latter were, in only a less degree than the Saracens and Ottomans, the cause of the fall of the Greek Church. The two Sees were placed by the great (ecumenical Councils on an equality; it is, therefore, necessary to point out the process and the causes, through which the downfall of the one and the victory of the otherwere effected. If it is shown that I have overstated my case; or if, in order to prove it, I have gone out of my way to introduce unnecessary or irrelevant matter, I shall be willing to acknowledge my error. I can only say that I have endeavoured not to do so. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church and the Eastern Empire IT has often been said that the Eastern Church has no history independently Of the State; and this is so far true, that during long periods the annals of that Com munion have little else to show than lists of patriarchs. At the same time, at certain intervals episodes of great interest and importance occur, and from first to last the influence of the Church on the social and religious life of the Eastern Empire is a subject well worthy of study. To relate, however briefly, those episodes, and to trace the working of that influence, is the object of the pre sent volume. The early period, that Of the first four General Councils, belongs to the history of the Church at large, and therefore is only touched upon here as far as subsequent events depended upon it; it is the later, or Byzantine, age of the Eastern Church which we have especially to consider. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Post-Nicene Greek Fathers The interaction of these two schools of thought and centers of influence constitutes the history of the Eastern Church during the period before us. There is a technical use of terms which would limit "the Alexandrian School" to the theological institution connected with the Alexandrian Church and "the Antiochian School" to a certain school of scripture interpretation originating in Antioch. We, however, designate by the first the type of thought and the body of thinkers centering in Alexandria from the fourth century onward, and by the second the thought and thinkers peculiar at that period to the Orient. These two types of thought may be traced to a common source in the mind of Origen. This greatest theologian of the early Church was the culminating fruit of an earlier school at Alexandria. Five hundred years before he was born, the Greek conqueror founded, near the mouth of the Nile, within a few hours' sail of either Greece or Syria, the city which bears his name.
