Sir Edwin Arnold (1832-1904) was an English poet and journalist, who is most known for his work, The Light of Asia. The literary task which he set before him was the interpretation in English verse of the life and philosophy of the East. His chief work with this object is The Light of Asia, which was translated into various languages such as Hindi. The Light of Asia, subtitled The Great Renunciation, is in a form of a narrative poem. The book endeavors to describe the life and time of Prince Gautama Siddhartha, who after attaining enlightenment became The Buddha, The Awakened One. The book presents his life, character, and philosophy, in a series of verses. It is a free adaptation of the Lalitavistara. A few decades before the book's publication, very little was known outside Asia about the Buddha and Buddhism, the religion which he founded, and which had existed for about twenty-five centuries. Book excerpt: The anthology 'Wordsworth & Colidge: Lyrical Ballads and Other Poems' epitomizes the advent of Romanticism in English literature, showcasing a revolutionary departure from the classical confines towards an exploration of the natural and emotional world. The collection fuses a remarkable array of literary styles—ranging from the simplicity and directness of the ballad form to the complex emotional and philosophical depths of longer lyrical pieces. It not only includes seminal works that marked a turning point in literary history but also illustrates the diverse and innovative approaches of its contributors towards common themes of nature, imagination, and the human condition. The collaboration between William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, two of the most eminent figures of the Romantic movement, lends this anthology a unique perspective. Their backgrounds as pioneers of this literary era, coupled with their personal beliefs and experiences, significantly influenced the thematic and stylistic direction of the works included. This collection is aligned with the broader Romantic movement's emphasis on emotion, individualism, and the sublime, showcasing the synthesis of Wordsworth's profound contemplation of nature and Coleridge's rich, imaginative prowess. 'Wordsworth & Coleridge: Lyrical Ballads and Other Poems' provides readers with an unparalleled opportunity to delve into the heart of Romantic literature. It encourages exploration beyond the surface of these texts, inviting a deep engagement with the ways in which these poets revolutionized literary expression. This anthology is indispensable not only for students of English literature but also for anyone seeking to understand the depth and diversity of human experience as depicted through one of the most transformative periods of literary history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is the longest major poem by the English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. The Poem relates the experiences of a sailor who has returned from a long sea voyage. The mariner stops a man who is on the way to a wedding ceremony and begins to narrate a story. The wedding-guest's reaction turns from bemusement to impatience to fear to fascination as the mariner's story progresses, as can be seen in the language style: Coleridge uses narrative techniques such as personification and repetition to create a sense of danger, the supernatural, or serenity, depending on the mood in different parts of the poem. Along with other poems in Lyrical Ballads, it was a signal shift to modern poetry and the beginning of British Romantic literature. Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772 - 1834) was an English poet, literary critic and philosopher who, with his friend William Wordsworth, was a founder of the Romantic Movement in England and a member of the Lake Poets.
