Book excerpt: In AD 70 the city of Jerusalem was destroyed by Roman forces after a 6 month siege, the world-famous temple burnt to the ground. This was the disastrous outcome of a Jewish revolt against Roman domination beginning in AD 66 with high hopes and early success, but soon became mired in factional conflict, at its most extreme within Jerusalem itself.

Book excerpt: Josephus’ account of a war marked by treachery and atrocity is a superbly detailed and evocative record of the Jewish rebellion against Rome between AD 66 and 70. Originally a rebel leader, Josephus changed sides after he was captured to become a Rome-appointed negotiator, and so was uniquely placed to observe these turbulent events, from the siege of Jerusalem to the final heroic resistance and mass suicides at Masada. His account provides much of what we know about the history of the Jews under Roman rule, with vivid portraits of such key figures as the Emperor Vespasian and Herod the Great. Often self-justifying and divided in its loyalties, The Jewish War nevertheless remains one of the most immediate accounts of war, its heroism and its horrors, ever written.

Book excerpt: The Jewish War is a history book by Flavius Josephus about Jewish–Roman wars. Divided into seven books, it opens with a summary of Jewish history from the capture of Jerusalem by the Seleucid ruler Antiochus IV Epiphanes in 164 BC to the first stages of the First Jewish–Roman War (Book I and II). The next five books detail the unfolding of the war, under Roman generals Vespasian and Titus, to the death of the last Sicarii. Titus Flavius Josephus was a first-century Romano-Jewish scholar, historian and hagiographer, who was born in Jerusalem—then part of Roman Judea—to a father of priestly descent and a mother who claimed royal ancestry. He initially fought against the Romans during the First Jewish–Roman War as head of Jewish forces in Galilee, until surrendering in 67 CE to Roman forces led by Vespasian after the six-week siege of Jotapata. After Vespasian became Emperor in 69 CE, he granted Josephus his freedom, at which time Josephus assumed the emperor's family name of Flavius. He fully defected to the Roman side and was granted Roman citizenship. Josephus recorded Jewish history, with special emphasis on the first century CE and the First Jewish–Roman War, including the Siege of Masada. His most important works were The Jewish War (c. 75) and Antiquities of the Jews (c. 94).

Book excerpt: "The Wars of the Jews" is a historical work written by the Jewish historian Flavius Josephus in the late 1st century. Also known as "Jewish War" or "De Bello Judaico" in Latin, the book recounts the Jewish revolt against Roman rule, particularly focusing on the events leading to the destruction of the Second Temple in Jerusalem in 70 CE. Key aspects of the book include: Historical Context: Josephus provides a detailed account of the First Jewish-Roman War (66-73 CE), offering historical context and a chronological narrative of the events leading up to and during the conflict. Author's Background: Flavius Josephus was a Jewish general who, after being captured by the Romans, switched allegiances and became a historian and advisor to the Roman emperors. His works, including "The Wars of the Jews," reflect both his firsthand experiences and his perspective as a historian. Military Campaigns: The narrative delves into the military campaigns and battles that took place during the Jewish revolt. Josephus, having served as a military commander for the Jewish forces before his capture, provides insights into the strategies and tactics employed by both sides. Siege of Jerusalem: A significant portion of the work is dedicated to the siege of Jerusalem, which culminated in the destruction of the Second Temple. Josephus vividly describes the hardships faced by the inhabitants of the city and the escalating intensity of the conflict. Roman Perspective: While Josephus was a Jewish historian, his later allegiance to the Romans is evident in his narrative, providing a perspective that aligns with Roman interests. This aspect adds a layer of complexity to the interpretation of the events. Religious and Cultural Insights: "The Wars of the Jews" also delves into the religious and cultural aspects of the Jewish people during this tumultuous period. Josephus provides context for the motivations of the Jewish rebels and the socio-political dynamics that fueled the conflict. Historiographical Significance: Josephus' work is a crucial historical source for understanding the Jewish-Roman War and its aftermath. It provides valuable insights into the political, military, and religious dynamics of the time. Legacy: The book has had a lasting impact on historical scholarship and is considered an essential primary source for the study of the First Jewish-Roman War. Despite the challenges of interpreting Josephus's bias and motivations, his work remains a foundational text for understanding this critical period in Jewish and Roman history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A conflict that erupted between Roman legions and some Judaeans in late AD 66 had an incalculable impact on Rome's physical appearance and imperial governance; on ancient Jews bereft of their mother-city and temple; and on early Christian fortunes. Historical scholarship and cinema alike tend to see the conflict as the culmination of long Jewish resistance to Roman oppression. In this volume, Steven Mason re-examines the war in all relevant contexts (such as the Parthian dimension, and Judaea's place in Roman Syria) and phases, from the Hasmoneans to the fall of Masada. Mason approaches each topic as a historical investigation, clarifying problems that need to be solved, understanding the available evidence, and considering scenarios that might explain the evidence. The simplest reconstructions make the conflict more humanly intelligible while casting doubt on received knowledge.
