Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A Digger must not refuse a request from the Dead." —Rule Five of the Gravedigger’s Code Ian Fossor is last in a long line of Gravediggers. It’s his family’s job to bury the dead and then, when Called by the dearly departed, to help settle the worries that linger beyond the grave so spirits can find peace in the Beyond. But Ian doesn’t want to help the dead—he wants to be a Healer and help the living. Such a wish is, of course, selfish and impossible. Fossors are Gravediggers. So he reluctantly continues his training under the careful watch of his undead mentor, hoping every day that he’s never Called and carefully avoiding the path that leads into the forbidden woods bordering the cemetery. Just as Ian’s friend, Fiona, convinces him to talk to his father, they’re lured into the woods by a risen corpse that doesn’t want to play by the rules. There, the two are captured by a coven of Weavers, dark magic witches who want only two thing—to escape the murky woods where they’ve been banished, and to raise the dead and shift the balance of power back to themselves. Only Ian can stop them. With a little help from his friends. And his long-dead ancestors. Equal parts spooky and melancholy, funny and heartfelt, The Gravedigger’s Son is a gorgeous debut that will long sit beside Neil Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book and Jonathan Auxier's The Night Gardener.

Book excerpt: Famous for his electrifying poetry readings, Paul Durcan marks four decades of composing silently and reciting aloud with this magnificent collection, which brings together for the first time the critically acclaimed poet's own choice of his work from his first book, Endsville (1967), to The Laughter of Mothers (2007). Life is a Dream represents the whole range of Durcan's writing - funny and subversive verse narratives and self-mocking poems of underachievement; poems celebrating love and sex or the lives of famous writers and artists; as well as tender, poignant verses commemorating the dead. Throughout his long career, Durcan has continued to make passionate and moving poetry out of his own and his country's misfortunes. He is by turns a surrealist, a mystic, an Irish comedian with perfect comic timing and an angry champion of the oppressed. Life is a Dream reaffirms the constant vision and artistic integrity of one of the most powerful, humane and original voices in modern poetry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I Too Dream America is based on a true story. My aim is to present this culture in a form that informs and teaches you, allows you to make cross-cultural connections, and create the opportunity for you to see your own culture through this cultural mirror. In the pages that follow, you will learn mostly about the customs and beliefs of this African culture. Some of the customs and beliefs you are about to encounter in this volume may shock you, amaze you, amuse you, or leave you awe-inspired. You may find the whole thing fascinating. Whatever emotion you come away with as you thumb through these pages, it is my hope that you will hold on to something that is life changing for you- for the better. The purpose of this book is to emphasize similarities between cultures, heighten students' consciousness about ethnic diversity and appreciation for their own ethnic heritage. Although the African culture is presented in this story, it is the universality of the issues discussed that is important. I have done everything I could to make this journey to a strange world as easy as possible without compromising the very essence of cultural discovery. I hope that you will get a lot from this book, and it will change your views about life, yourself, your culture, and the cultures of other peoples of the world. As a teacher, I am aware of the need to educate people, especially our children, on the cultures of other peoples. I have, therefore, included discussion on the socio-cultural issues and cross-cultural issues from an ethnographic perspective and incorporated strategies for teaching this culture and the cultures of other ethnic groups. You really do not need to study the culture of every group before you can begin to teach in a multicultural classroom. The idea is that once you have mastered the strategy for teaching the culture of one ethnic group, you can teach the culture of any ethnic group. This is necessary because, as Takaki (1993) notes, all students in America today need to know much more about the origins and history of the particular cultures which, as Americans, they will encounter during their lives. Finally, it is my heart's desire to impress upon you, the teacher, the fact that every student that enters your classroom, like the little boy in this story, comes with a dream. It is your responsibility to keep every student's dream alive, to focus every one of them, and to motivate each of them to achieve his or her purposes. All children want to succeed. They, too, dream America. As Dr. Hanson observes, "I Too Dream America gives readers a tantalizing glimpse into a world few Americans have experienced or imagined. As he relates his youthful experiences in Nigeria, we are simotaneously intrigued and astonished by the sense of participation his stories deliver. He makes it possible for readers to share his adventures, successes, and tragedies as participants in his vivid memories of a unique African cultural heritage." Dr. Allen notes, "It captures the spirit of voice of every parent, teacher and child who would like to understand the culture of other countries. It is a look at the African culture through the eyes of a native who has come to America and now lives the American dream. It gives direction to teachers, parents and students on how to understand and appreciate the culture and contributions of every child that shows up on the steps of an American school, seeking an education that would lead him or her to the American dream. It brings to life the desires of every parent and the aspirations of every child"

Book excerpt: Close Relationships is Geert Jan van Gelder's groundbreaking and comprehensive study of the diverse facts and opinions concerning incest and close-kin marriage found in literary and non-literary pre-modern Arabic texts. The pre-Islamic Arabs knew about the dangers of inbreeding; the Qur'an formulates the basic principles of marriage impediments in Islam, which were elaborated by generations of jurists. Incest is a motif found in lampoons, anecdotes, stories, legends, dream interpretation, and polemics with other religions, in particular the Zoroastrians, who in pre-Islamic times allegedly recommended next-of-kin marriage. Many of the relevant passages are presented as English translations in this richly documented book.

Book excerpt: From Barnardo boy to original virgin soldier; from apprentice journalist in London's Fleet Street to famous novelist... At times funny, at times sad, but always honest and utterly compulsive, Leslie Thomas's story is straight out of fiction. As an orphan, he picked his way through the rubble of post-war Britain and was sent on national service to the Far East. Later he became a Fleet Street reporter, with hilarious experiences to relate, and then became the bestselling author of The Virgin Soldiers - the novel that, although scandalous in its day, is now recognised as a classic of its kind. He is also the creator of Dangerous Davies: The Last Detective, which has been adapted into a popular television series. In 2005, Leslie Thomas was awarded an OBE for services to literature. With a new introduction for this edition, this is an amazing story, and Leslie Thomas's magic touch brings it crackling to life with warmth, wit and humour.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dreams for Dead Bodies: Blackness, Labor, and the Corpus of American Detective Fiction offers new arguments about the origins of detective fiction in the United States, tracing the lineage of the genre back to unexpected texts and uncovering how authors such as Edgar Allan Poe, Mark Twain, Pauline Hopkins, and Rudolph Fisher made use of the genre’s puzzle-elements to explore the shifting dynamics of race and labor in America. The author constructs an interracial genealogy of detective fiction to create a nuanced picture of the ways that black and white authors appropriated and cultivated literary conventions that coalesced in a recognizable genre at the turn of the twentieth century. These authors tinkered with detective fiction’s puzzle-elements to address a variety of historical contexts, including the exigencies of chattel slavery, the erosion of working-class solidarities by racial and ethnic competition, and accelerated mass production. Dreams for Dead Bodies demonstrates that nineteenth- and early twentieth-century American literature was broadly engaged with detective fiction, and that authors rehearsed and refined its formal elements in literary works typically relegated to the margins of the genre. By looking at these margins, the book argues, we can better understand the origins and cultural functions of American detective fiction.

Book excerpt: From the winner of the Prix Goncourt, an exciting comic masterwork rooted in the French countryside. To research his thesis on contemporary agrarian life, anthropology student David Mazon moves from Paris to La Pierre-Saint-Christophe, a village in the marshlands of western France. Determined to understand the essence of the local culture, the intrepid young scholar scurries around restlessly on his moped to interview residents. But what David doesn’t yet know is that here, in this seemingly ordinary place, once the stage for wars and revolutions, Death leads a dance: when one thing perishes, the Wheel of Life recycles its soul and hurls it back into the world as microbe, human, or wild animal, sometimes in the past, sometimes in the future. And once a year, Death and the living observe a temporary truce during a gargantuan three-day feast where gravediggers gorge themselves on food, drink, and language. Brimming with Mathias Énard’s characteristic wit and encyclopedic brilliance, The Annual Banquet of the Gravediggers’ Guild is a riotous novel where the edges between past and present are constantly dissolving against a Rabelaisian backdrop of excess.
