Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been over twenty years since the people of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland voted for devolution. Over that time, the devolved legislatures have established themselves and matured their approach to governance. At different times and for different reasons, each has put wellbeing at the heart of their approach – codifying their values and goals within wellbeing frameworks. This open access book explores, for the first time, why each set their goal as improving wellbeing and how they balance the core elements of societal wellbeing (economic, social and environmental outcomes). Do the frameworks represent a genuine attempt to think differently about how devolved government can plan and organise public services? And if so, what early indications are there of the impact is this having on people’s lives?

Book Synopsis The Governance of Wales by : Russell Deacon
Download or read book The Governance of Wales written by Russell Deacon and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whilst political devolution did not occur until 1999, administrative devolution was created in Wales in 1964 with the establishment of the Welsh Office. This government ministry dominated political life in Wales and determined many aspects of government policy in Wales. The Welsh Secretaries in the shape of politicians such as Jim Griffiths, George Thomas, Nicholas Edwards, Peter Walker, David Hunt, John Redwood and William Hague shaped the political life of Wales through the strength of their own personalities and personal political agendas. Using interviews with many of the past Secretaries of State for Wales including Ron Davies and Alun Michael, this book provides the first comprehensive history of the former Welsh Office and the policy creation process. It is of interest to anyone who wishes to explore how the Welsh Office developed policy in Wales before the advent of the National Assembly. At the same time it enables the reader to view the characters and political agendas that have shaped the modern Welsh nation. This book will contribute to the growing interest in Welsh politics, providing an extensively researched background to one of Wales's most important post war institutions.

Book Synopsis The UK Regional-National Economic Problem by : Philip McCann
Download or read book The UK Regional-National Economic Problem written by Philip McCann and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-10 with total page 577 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, the United Kingdom has become a more and more divided society with inequality between the regions as marked as it has ever been. In a landmark analysis of the current state of Britain’s regional development, Philip McCann utilises current statistics, examines historical trends and makes pertinent international comparisons to assess the state of the nation. The UK Regional–National Economic Problem brings attention to the highly centralised, top down governance structure that the UK deploys, and demonstrates that it is less than ideally placed to rectify these inequalities. The ‘North-South’ divide in the UK has never been greater and the rising inequalities are evident in almost all aspects of the economy including productivity, incomes, employment status and wealth. Whilst the traditional economic dominance of London and its hinterland has continued along with relative resilience in the South West of England and Scotland, in contrast the Midlands, the North of England, Northern Ireland and Wales lag behind by most measures of prosperity. This inequality is greatly limiting national economic performance and the fact that Britain has a below average standard of living by European and OECD terms has been ignored. The UK’s economic and governance inequality is unlikely to be fundamentally rebalanced by the current governance and connectivity trends, although this definitive study suggests that some areas of improvement are possible if they are well implemented. This pivotal analysis is essential reading for postgraduate students in economics and urban studies as well as researchers and policy makers in local and central government.
Book Synopsis The Dialogue of the Government of Wales (1594) by : J. Gwynfor Jones
Download or read book The Dialogue of the Government of Wales (1594) written by J. Gwynfor Jones and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jones (emer., Welsh history, Cardiff Univ., Wales) offers a volume in two approximately equal parts: a translation of an updated text written in 1594 by George Owen of Henllys, North Pembrokeshire, and an introduction analyzing the text. Owen's subject is the administration of the legal institutions of Wales established by the Acts of Union issued by Henry VIII. The presentation is in the form of a dialogue between the Welshman Demetus (representing Owen's views) and Bartolus, a German traveling around Europe to observe the working of the governmental and legal systems found in various countries. Owen's point of view is that of the gentry who benefitted from Henry VIII's "reforms," as contrasted with the harsh regime earlier established by Henry IV. The dialogue gives a detailed picture of Pembrokeshire but only the sketchiest view of the other parts of Wales, and reflects the social and economic ambitions of the upper class of Welshmen with little regard to the urban dwellers or the more humble rural populace. Nonetheless, the dialogue reveals an interesting attempt to combine the legal court institutions of England with legal customs of Wales. Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates and above. Upper-division Undergraduates; Graduate Students; Researchers/Faculty. Reviewed by K. F. Drew.

Book Synopsis The Monarchy and the Constitution by : Vernon Bogdanor
Download or read book The Monarchy and the Constitution written by Vernon Bogdanor and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1995-11-09 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the increasingly questioning world of the 1990s, the role of the monarchy in a democracy is again coming under scrutiny. Its critics argue that the monarchy is a profoundly conservative institution which serves to inhibit social change; that it has outlived its usefulness; that it symbolizes and reinforces deference and hierachy; and that its radical reform is therefore long overdue.Rejecting these arguments Vernon Bogdanor makes a powerful case for the positive role that monarchy plays in modern democratic politics. Ranging across law, politics, and history he argues that far from undermining democracy, the monarchy sustains and strengthens democratic institutions; that constitutional monarchy is a form of government that ensures not conservatism but legitimacy. The first serious examination of the political role of the monarchy to appear in many years, this book will make fascinating reading for all those interested in the monarchy and the future of British politics.
