Book excerpt: This is a study of the four gospels that goes beyond traditional boundaries. After considering the dramatic structures of sources as diverse as Shakespeare and Star Wars, this book makes the bold suggestion that the gospels were written as dramas, and not as strict chronological histories. Consider that the gospel authors had to compete for an audience. If they wanted to gain followers, they had to portray Jesus as a dramatic hero, superior to any hero their audience already knew, but with virtues that their audience would recognize, admire and be drawn to. The evidence in the gospels leads to the conclusion that when a gospel was intended for Jews, the author based its structure on the 5 books of the Jewish Law. And when a gospel was intended for gentiles, the author based its structure on the 5-act plays written by the Roman dramatist Seneca. This book also explains why Roman authorities would have looked favorably on the gospels. Are the Gospels Dramas? This book says YES.

An author on the cutting edge of contemporary homiletics and theology offers a fresh approach to preaching that helps listeners see themselves as actors in God's grand drama. Ahmi Lee presents a unifying "third way" in homiletical approaches (i.e., theodramatic) that reimagines the preacher's role in relation to the Bible, the congregation, and the world. The book not only helps students understand various preaching models but also is relevant to working preachers who want to critique and improve their approach. Foreword by Mark Labberton.

Using reproducible scripts, the dramas in Lectionary-Based Gospel Dramas for Lent and the Easter Triduum "break open" the Gospels for Lent, Holy Week, and Easter, moving the hearts and minds of youth and adults alike. By engaging in these dramas, participants act as catechist, lector, Gospel players, improv artists, small-group leaders, and audience--a unique learning environment that allows young people to be catechists for themselves and for one another. The dramas are powerful yet easy to stage. The leader's role is purposefully minimal, allowing teens to take the leading roles in the production. These dramas have been used successfully in school classrooms, parish religious education programs, youth groups, RCIA catechesis, homiletic reflections at Mass, and retreats. This book contains everything you need to produce ten dramas, including 10 reproducible scripts and 10 full-page icons by Vicki Shuck, which are an essential component for visual learners. Imagine the excitement and learning your teens will experience as they live the Gospel through drama!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, highly esteemed scholar Kevin Vanhoozer introduces readers to a way of thinking about Christian theology that takes the work he began in the groundbreaking 2005 book, The Drama of Doctrine, to its next level. Vanhoozer argues that theology is not merely a set of cognitive beliefs, but is also something we do that involves speech and action alike. He uses a theatrical model to explain the ways in which doctrine shapes Christian understanding and forms disciples. The church, Vanhoozer posits, is the preeminent theater where the gospel is "performed," with doctrine directing this performance. Doctrines are not simply truths to be stored, shelved, and stacked, but indications and directions to be followed, practiced, and enacted. In "performing" doctrine, Christians are shaped into active disciples of Jesus Christ. He goes on to examine the state of the church in today's world and explores how disciples can do or perform doctrine. Written in an accessible and engaging style, Faith Speaking Understanding sets forth a compelling vision of what the church is and what it should be doing, and demonstrates the importance of Christian doctrine for this mission. Disciples who want to follow Christ in all situations need doctrinal direction as they walk onto the social stage in the great theater of the world. The Christian faith is about acknowledging, and participating in, the great thing God is doing in our world: making all things new in Christ through the Holy Spirit. Doctrine ministers understanding: of God, of the drama of redemption, of the church as a company of faithful players, and of individual actors, all of whom have important roles to play. In an age where things fall apart and centers fail to hold, doctrine centers us in Jesus Christ, in whom all things hold together.

Book excerpt: This is a how-to and why-to book about exploratory ensemble biblical storytelling that grew out of Swanson's six years of work on the Provoking the Gospel Project, a collaborative venture involving a multigenerational team of storytellers. From its first trial as a teaching tool, through the early experiments with a pioneering team of storytellers, workshops, performances, and resistant students as well as receptive ones, Swanson discovered that this way of working with biblical stories led him deeper and deeper into an exploration of a surprisingly powerful interpretive method. He shares with those in ministry or preparing for a religious vocation a method that encourages students to discover themselves and their world in biblical texts.
