Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fifth book in the popular Remembering series gives us an inside look at NHL legend Phil Esposito. When we think of Esposito's greatness-his two Stanley Cups; his record-setting 76 goals in the 1970-71 NHL season; his heroic role in Team Canada's victory over the Soviets in the 1972 Summit Series-much of it seems explained by his "ordinariness." Lacking the pure athleticism of teammate Bobby Orr or the dazzle of former Chicago linemate Bobby Hull, "Espo" got by on qualities that seem more in line with the values of the average person-a proud work ethic, a sense of humour and an unabashed desire to succeed. Maybe that's why hockey fans couldn't help but love him. The kid who'd been cut from midget and junior teams-who'd been written off as too heavy and slow-had somehow found the will to persevere, and to become a legend.Beautifully designed and packed with photos and classic sports journalism, the books in the Remembering series are treasures of hockey nostalgia.
Book Synopsis The Devil and Bobby Hull by : Gare Joyce
Download or read book The Devil and Bobby Hull written by Gare Joyce and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-09-27 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A warts-and-all treatment of Hull's very public mid-life crisis in the 1970s, supported by interviews with Hull himself and many others who played with him and knew him throughout his career. When he walked away from the NHL it was payback for the hard feelings between Hull and the Wirtz family, owners of the Chicago Black Hawks. Joyce presents the case that Hull is the most influential player the game has ever seen, and is its most unfairly overlooked superstar.
Book Synopsis Contrails over the Mojave by : George J Marrett
Download or read book Contrails over the Mojave written by George J Marrett and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Contrails over the Mojave George Marrett takes off where Tom Wolfe’s The Right Stuff ended in 1963. Marrett started the Air Force Test Pilot School at Edwards AFB only two weeks after the school’s commander, Col. Chuck Yeager, ejected from a Lockheed NF-104 trying to set a world altitude record. He describes life as a space cadet experiencing 15 Gs in a human centrifuge, zero-G maneuvers in a KC-135 “Vomit Comet,” and a flight to 80,000 feet in the F-104A Starfighter. After graduating from Yeager’s “Charm School,” he was assigned to the Fighter Branch of Flight Test Operations, where he flew the latest fighter aircraft and chased other test aircraft as they set world speed and altitude records. Marrett takes readers into the cockpit as he “goes vertical” in a T-38 Talon, completes high-G maneuvers in an F-4C Phantom, and conducts wet-runway landing tests in the accident-prone F-111A Aardvark. He writes about Col. “Silver Fox” Stephens setting a world speed record in the YF-12 Blackbird and Bob Gilliland testing speed stalls in the SR-71 spy plane, but he also relives stories of crashes that killed test pilot friends. He recounts dead-sticking a T-38 to a landing on Rogers Dry Lake after a twin-engine failure and conducting dangerous tail hook barrier testing in a fighter jet without a canopy. A mysterious UFO sighting in the night sky above the Mojave Desert, known as “The Edwards Encounter,” also receives Marrett’s attention. Whether the author is assessing a new aircraft’s performance or describing the experiences of test pilots as they routinely faced the possibility of death, this look at the golden age of flight testing both thrills and informs.

Book excerpt: The true stroy of the longest-distance hijacking in American history. In an America torn apart by the Vietnam War and the demise of '60s idealism, airplane hijackings were astonishingly routine. Over a five-year period starting in 1968, the desperate and disillusioned seized commercial jets nearly once a week, using guns, bombs, and jars of acid. Some hijackers wished to escape to foreign lands; others aimed to swap hostages for sacks of cash. Their criminal exploits mesmerized the country, never more so than when shattered Army veteran Roger Holder and mischievous party girl Cathy Kerkow managred to comandeer Western Airlines Flight 701 and flee across an ocean with a half-million dollars in ransom—a heist that remains the longest-distance hijacking in American history. More than just an enthralling story about a spectacular crime and its bittersweet, decades-long aftermath, The Skies Belong to Us is also a psychological portrait of America at its most turbulent and a testament to the madness that can grip a nation when politics fail.
