Download or read book Correspondence written by Herman Melville and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 948 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Consequently, to fill the gaps within the correspondence, 542 editorial entries are chronologically interspersed for letters both by and to Melville for which no full text has been located but for which some evidence survives. These entries, like the editorial headnotes for the known letters, flesh out the specific historical and biographical contexts for the unlocated letters. Both supply Horth's full annotations, placing circumstances, persons, and allusions, from a wide range of documentary and scholarly sources, and drawing upon family archives of both Melville and his wife, including the recently recovered portion, now in the New York Public Library, of a trove preserved by his sister Augusta." "The aim of this edition, volume fourteen in the Northwestern-Newberry Edition of The Writings of Herman Melville, is to present a text as close to the author's intention at the time of inscription as his difficult handwriting or other surviving evidence permits. On this basis, the texts earlier presented in The Letters of Herman Melville (1960), edited by Merrell R. Davis and William H. Gilman, have been revised, with differences in almost every letter in spelling and punctuation, and some forty-five differences in wording. Fifty-two newly discovered letters by Melville, more than half of which are first published here, are added to those printed in the 1960 edition. This text of Correspondence is an Approved Text of the Committee on Scholarly Editions (Modern Language Association of America)."--BOOK JACKET.
Book Synopsis The Province of Burma by : Alleyne Ireland
Download or read book The Province of Burma written by Alleyne Ireland and published by . This book was released on 1907 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alleyne Ireland (1871-1951) was a Fellow of the Royal Geographic Society in London who, in 1901, was appointed by the University of Chicago to head a commission to study colonial administration in the Far East. Ireland's first major project, published in 1907, was this exhaustive, two-volume study of Burma, at the time under British rule as a province of the Indian Empire. Volume one contains a general description of Burma, a history of Britain's acquisition of the colony, and chapters on the people, government, general administration, civil service, police administration, judicial administration, prison administration, and educational system. Volume two is devoted to economic and administrative affairs, including financial administration, the land revenue system, public works, trade and shipping, and the administration of forests, towns, villages, and harbors. Twenty-one appendices provide additional detail, including economic and demographic statistics, the texts of treaties, agreements, and reports, a bibliography, and a glossary of Indian and Burmese words. At the end of volume one is a large foldout map of Burma by Edinburgh mapmakers John Bartholomew & Co.

Download or read book Love written by Jules Michelet and published by . This book was released on 1859 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Amour, L', by the noted French historian Michelet, was published in 1859, when he was sixty-one years old. In the Introduction he writes:--"The title which would fully express the design of this book, its signification, and its import, would be 'Moral Enfranchisement Effected by True Love.'" ... Yet it was merely an attempt to establish reverence for the physical life of woman. Her intellectual life was considered only as a kind of appendage to the physical. Michelet apparently had no other conception of woman and her destiny than as maiden, wife, mother, housekeeper. ... He saw about him not a nation of families, but of individuals. He wished to hold before his countrymen an ideal of family life. ... Its conception of love, though one-sided, was sufficiently in advance of contemporary thought on the subject to render the book remarkable."--C.D. Warner, The library of the world's best literature : an anthology in thirty volumes, 1917.
