Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If scholars no longer necessarily find the essence and origins of what came to be known as Christianity in the personality of a historical figure known as Jesus of Nazareth, it nevertheless remains the case that the study of early Christianity is dominated by an assumption of the force of Jesus's personality on divergent communities. In The Godman and the Sea, Michael J. Thate shifts the terms of this study by focusing on the Gospel of Mark, which ends when Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome discover a few days after the crucifixion that Jesus's tomb has been opened but the corpse is not there. Unlike the other gospels, Mark does not include the resurrection, portraying instead loss, puzzlement, and despair in the face of the empty tomb. Reading Mark's Gospel as an exemplary text, Thate examines what he considers to be retellings of other traumatic experiences—the stories of Jesus's exorcising demons out of a man and into a herd of swine, his stilling of the storm, and his walking on the water. Drawing widely on a diverse set of resources that include the canon of western fiction, classical literature, the psychological study of trauma, phenomenological philosophy, the new materialism, psychoanalytic theory, poststructural philosophy, and Hebrew Bible scholarship, as well as the expected catalog of New Testament tools of biblical criticism in general and Markan scholarship in particular, The Godman and the Sea is an experimental reading of the Gospel of Mark and the social force of the sea within its traumatized world. More fundamentally, however, it attempts to position this reading as a story of trauma, ecstasy, and what has become through the ruins of past pain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines Leo Tolstoy’s struggle to understand the relationship of God and man, in connection with his attempt to answer questions regarding the meaning of life. Tolstoy addressed such issues in a systematic way and with great concerns for the future of humanity. Predrag Cicovacki approaches Tolstoy both as a thinker and as an artist, and examines various sides of his intellectual and artistic engagement: his social criticism, his ambiguous relationship to nature, his understanding of art, and his attempted reconstruction of the true religion. By combining philosophical, religious, and literary analysis, Cicovacki undertakes an interdisciplinary study, showing much can be learned from Tolstoy's insights, as well as from his mistakes.

Book excerpt: The Second Coming takes a fresh look at the Gospel of Matthew through the unconditioned eyes of a truth-seeker. The book reinterprets the Gospel of Matthew from a non-dualistic perspective and brings out spiritual insights totally unexpected. The book also brings to the forefront the forgotten character of Joseph as the 'tekton' of the Gospel. The distinctive feature of the book is that it redefines abstruse or undefined biblical terms such as, the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit, God, heaven, hell, Serpent, Satan, sin, etc., in a new light that makes the interpretation internally consistent, and also consistent with the external reality. According to the book, the message of the Gospel is straightforward: "The human body is the Savior. Therefore, turn to the body." The book goes beneath the literal content of the Gospel of Matthew to discover its soul.

Book excerpt: This book provides a constructive criticism of the emerging practice of conscious capitalism from the perspective of world religions and spiritualities. Conscious capitalism, to many of its adherents, represents an evolutionary step forward beyond the dominant neo-liberal paradigm, where it often appears that just about everything is for sale. Is conscious capitalism consistent with the values inherent in religious and spiritual world-views and does it provide a better fit for bringing out the best that business has to offer? This book answers these questions and many more. An appealing read for researchers in business ethics as well as any reader critical of the excrescences of capitalism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Martyrs create space and time through the actions they take, the fate they suffer, the stories they prompt, the cultural narratives against which they take place and the retelling of their tales in different places and contexts. The title "Desiring Martyrs" is meant in two senses. First, it refers to protagonists and antagonists of the martyrdom narratives who as literary characters seek martyrs and the way they inscribe certain kinds of cultural and social desire. Second, it describes the later celebration of martyrs via narrative, martyrdom acts, monuments, inscriptions, martyria, liturgical commemoration, pilgrimage, etc. Here there is a cultural desire to tell or remember a particular kind of story about the past that serves particular communal interests and goals. By applying the spatial turn to these ancient texts the volume seeks to advance a still nascent social geographical understanding of emergent Christian and Jewish martyrdom. It explores how martyr narratives engage pre-existing time-space configurations to result in new appropriations of earlier traditions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This series is entitled: Prominent Peaks of the Pilgrimage. Divided into two books, this twenty-lesson course traces the journey of the people of Israel, from out of the land of Egypt, into the land of Canaan. We will visit the people of Israel at the prominent peaks of their pilgrimage. Our main texts will come from the bible books of Exodus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, and Joshua. We shall see that the events that befell the children of Israel at the mountain sites are the very things that we have to expect on our pilgrimage. The lessons that the people of Israel had to learn are the very same lessons that our loving Lord would have us learn also. So, it behooves us to take a close look at the Lord's people and their pilgrimage, so that we can be better fit for our pilgrimage, for there are many pitfalls, dangers, and perils. Another major purpose of this course is to look at different aspects of the doctrine of salvation. Every keyword in this course brings out a new revelation concerning biblical salvation. Biblical salvation covers more than just the regeneration of the human spirit. Many struggles in the lives of Christians can be traced to unfamiliarity with the doctrine of salvation. If we do not see all that the Lord has done in salvation, then we will have unnecessary struggles. The doctrine of salvation permeates this entire course. We will turn salvation over and look at the subject in all its fullness. God is only interested in complete salvation. God is interested in salvation that delivers the sinful man: spirit, soul, and body; past, present, and future; penalty, power, and presence. That is what God's business is: complete salvation. These two books containing twenty chapters/lessons can be read privately, or they can be taught in an audience setting. Reader’s Feedback “An absolutely powerful bible course to transform willing hearts. Each lesson is packed with life-transforming principles. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a group of islands in the far south-west Pacific Ocean, New Zealand has a history that is steeped in the sea. Its people have encountered the sea in many different ways: along the coast, in port, on ships, beneath the waves, behind a camera, and in the realm of the imagination. While New Zealanders have continually altered their marine environments, the ocean, too, has influenced their lives. A multi-disciplinary work encompassing history, marine science, archaeology and visual culture, New Zealand and the Sea explores New Zealand’s varied relationship with the sea, challenging the conventional view that history unfolds on land. Leading and emerging scholars highlight the dynamic, ocean-centred history of these islands and their inhabitants, offering fascinating new perspectives on New Zealand’s pasts. ‘The ocean has profoundly shaped culture across this narrow archipelago . . . The meeting of land and sea is central in historical accounts of Polynesian discovery and colonisation; European exploratory voyaging; sealing, whaling and the littoral communities that supported these plural occupations; and the mass migrant passage from Britain.’ – Frances Steel

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although at times painfully insecure about her creative ability and achievement, Margaret Laurence nevertheless remained fiercely loyal to her artistic vision, an archetypal vision of loss, exile and redemption that sought comprehensive expression in the epic mode that shapes the Bible, Dante's Divine Comedy, Milton's Paradise Lost, and ultimately the Manawaka world of Hagar Shipley, Rachel Cameron, Stacey MacAindra, and Morag Gunn. Paul Comeau traces the development of Margaret Laurence's epic voice from its tentative beginnings in her African fiction to its culmination in the epic Manawaka Cycle, a Dantesque journey through an infernal state of self-destructive pride, out of a purgatorial paralysis of self-doubt, and on to a kind of paradisal fulfillment in self-knowledge. Laurence discovered in epic a fitting mode at once to requite her debt to the ancestors and to break free of their influence to portray the world through the sight of her own eyes. In so doing, she became the enduring epic voice of a country and a generation.

Book excerpt: Volume 3 Audubon and Bachman's Quadrupeds of North America begins with this description of the jaguar: "The Jaguar compares with the Asiatic tiger in size and in shape; its legs, however, are shorter than those of the royal tiger, although its body is perhaps as heavy. Head, large; jaws, capable of great expansion; incisors, large, and slightly curved inwards; ears, rather small, rounded, clothed with short hairs on the inside. €Body, rather inclining to be stout, and shorter and less elegant than the cougar: at the shoulders the Jaguar is not much more raised from the earth, but it stands higher from the ground near the rump ..."
