Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Giraffe-Hunters No one who has written books for the young during the present century ever had so large a circle of readers as Captain Mayne Reid, or ever was so well fitted by circumstances to write the books by which lie is chiefly known. His life, which was an adventurous one, was ripened with the experience of two Continents, and his temperament which was an ardent one, reflected the traits of two races Irish by birth, he was American in his sympathies with the people of the New World, whose acquaintance he made at an early period, among whom he lived for years, and whose battles he helped to win. He was probably more familiar with the Southern and Western portion of the United States forty years ago than any native-born American of that time. A curious interest attaches to the life of Captain Reid, but it is not of the kind that casual biographers dwell upon. If he had written it himself it would have charmed thousands of readers, who can now merely imagine what it might have been from the glimpses of it which they obtain in his writings It was not passed in the fierce light of publicity, but in that simple, silent obscurity which is the lot of most men, and is their happiness, if they only knew it. Briefly related, the life of Captain Reid was as follows; He was born in 1818, in the north of Ireland, the son of a Presbyterian clergyman, who was a type of the class which Goldsmith has described so freshly in the "Deserted Village," and was highly thought of for his labors among the poor of his neighborhood. An earnest, reverent man, to whom his calling was indeed a sacred one, he designed his son Mayne for the ministry, in the hope, no doubt, that he would be his successor. But nature had something to say about that, as well as his good father. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. On the banks of the Limpopo brightly blazes a hunter's fire, around which the reader may behold three distinct circles of animated beings. The largest is composed of horses, the second of dogs, and the lesser, or inner one, of young men, whom many of my readers will recognize as old acquaintances. I have but to mention the names of Hans and Hendrick Von Bloom, Groot Willem, and Arend Van Wyk, to make known that "The Young Yagers" are again on a hunting expedition. In the one in which we now encounter them, all the parties are not inspired by the same hopes and desires. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Giraffe Hunters, Vol. 2 of 3 The prisoners were compelled to remain inactive spectators of a division of their property, most of which was appropriated by the chief himself, as a sort of compensation for the loss of his horses, and the damage his own person had sustained in the capturing of one of his prisoners; for, before securing Groot Willem, he had been sent to the earth under a blow from that sturdy hunter's roer. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gorilla Hunters: A Tale of the Wilds of Africa It was five o'clock in the afternoon. There can be no doubt whatever as to that. Old Agnes may say what she pleases, - she has a habit of doing so; but I know for certain (because I looked at my watch not ten minutes before it happened) that it was exactly five o'clock in the afternoon, when I received a most singular and every way remarkable visit - a visit which has left an indelible impression on my memory, as well it might, for, independent of its singularity and unexpectedness, one of its results was the series of strange adventures which are faithfully detailed in this volume. It happened thus: - I was seated in an arm chair in my private study in a small town on the west coast of England. It was a splendid afternoon, and it was exactly five o'clock. Mark that. Not that there is anything singular about the mere fact - neither is it in any way mixed up with the thread of this tale; but old Agnes is very obstinate - singularly positive - and I have a special desire that she should see it in print, that I have not given in on that point. Yes, it was five precisely, and a beautiful evening. I was ruminating, as I frequently do, on the pleasant memories of bygone days, especially the happy days that I spent long ago among the coral islands of the Pacific, when a tap at the door aroused me. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Hunter's Life Among Lions, Elephants, and Other Wild Animals of South Africa Mr. Roualeyn Gordon Gumming, the Nimrod of modern times, is a native of Scotland, and connected with the noble family of Argyll. His passion for the chase seems to have developed itself very early in youth, for long before he went to Eton to complete his studies, his room was a museum of hunting trophies. In the county of Moray, in the western part of Scotland, where his boyhood was spent, he was soon noted for his indefatigable devotion to the sports of the field, and his fondness for natural history. "Salmon-fishing and deer-stalking," he says, "were my favorite amusements; and during these early wanderings by wood and stream, the strong love of sport and admiration of nature in her wildest and most attractive forms, became with me an all-absorbing feeling, and my greatest possible enjoyment was to pass whole days, and many a summer night in solitude, where, undisturbed, I might contemplate the silent grandeur of the forest and the ever-varying beauty of the scenes around." After completing his studies at Eton, he entered the Indian army, and was attached to the Madras Light Cavalry. Sailing in 1839 to join his regiment, he touched at the Cape of Good Hope on the voyage out, and there made his first essays in that field wherein he has since become so famous.
