From the abdication of the Emporer to the attempted Putsch of July 20, 1944 the German Officers' Corps was a decisive element in the political life of the Weimar Republic and the Third Reich. In general the period has been divided into two major parts: the Weimar Republic, 1918-1933: and the Third Reich, 1933-1945. In addition the two periods have been subdivided into chronological episodes with an emphasis on the dominant personalities of these periods: Generals Groener, won Seeckt, von Schlicher, von Fritsch and Beck. The initial period revolves around the Army and the Revolution. For the first time the Army was without its 'Royal Shield'. In this position the Supreme Command, through the efforts of General Groener concluded their bargain with Friedrich Ebert. On the basis of this agreement the Army operated as the protector of the government while at the same time the institutions of the Army were left intact. During this period the Supreme Command was forced to rely more and more on the idependent Free Corps for physical support. The Kapp Putsch was the logical outgrowth of the split in Officers' Corps over the Versailles Treaty and the increasing power of the Free Corps. The decision of General von Seeckt in refusing to support the government revealed the Reichswehr as a dubious instrument of Republicanism. The failure of the Republic to democratize the Army left von Seeckt in a practically autonomous position of authority. Von Seeckt used his position to create the famous non-political Army. The non-political Reichswehr was undermined by the intrigues of General von Schleicher. After the dismissal of von Seeckt, von Schleicher attempted to use the Army as an arbiter of political authority. Under the protection of President von Hindenburg the Reichswehr names three Chancellors and introduced the wedge of authoritarian government. Finally, the Reichswehr stood calmly aside as Adolf Hitler became Chancellor. The Reichswehr not only approved of the National Socialist revolution, but also supported Hitler's personal succession to von Hindenburg. As a political force the Army failed to function in the early period of National Socialism. Not until the personal attack by Hitler on their prerogatives did they realize the extent of the power of Hitler. After the Fritsch crisis the politics in the Army was concerned with opposition to Hitler's war plans. Finally, the opposition within the Wehrmacht broadened into a Resistance group. The result was the Putsch of July 20, 1944. This was the culmination of the Army's activities as a political factor. The consequences of their policies were of a fateful nature for themselves and Germany.

Book excerpt: An engrossing history of the last year of the Second World War, charting the battles fought between the Soviet Red Army and the Nazis across German soil. The terrible months between the arrival of the Red Army on German soil and the final collapse of Hitler's regime were like no other in the Second World War. The Soviet Army's intent to take revenge for the horror that the Nazis had wreaked on their people produced a conflict of implacable brutality in which millions perished. From the great battles that marked the Soviet conquest of East and West Prussia to the final surrender in the Vistula estuary, this book recounts in chilling detail the desperate struggle of soldiers and civilians alike. These brutal campaigns are brought vividly to life by a combination of previously untold testimony and astute strategic analysis recognising a conflict of unprecedented horror and suffering.

Book excerpt: A revolutionary tradition did not exist in the Imperial German Army. But during the years 1918-1944 events occurred which produced such an impact on the moral fibre of the German Officer Corps that eventually a few of them participated in a conspiracy against Hitler. This work seeks only to throw light on those aspects of German military history that portray the gradual disintegration of the monolithic structure of the German Army that occurred prior to 20 July 1944. The study has been divided into four major parts: the revolutionary days following the defeat of World War I, 1918-1920; the development of the Reichswehr and the rise to power of Hitler, 1920-1933; the transition from Reichswehr to Wehrmacht, 1933-1938; and the period of active opposition to Hitler, 1938-1944. The analysis, generally, follows a chronological course, and results in an examination of those events which influenced the German officers who were the field commanders of World War II. In this tragedy, it would appear that the German Officer Corps was less to blame for its actions—or lack of action within the broader framework of the German nation—than has often been believed to be the case, primarily because the actions of the officers were often the result of factors beyond the control of soldiers. Such a conclusion may be at variance with that of other writers on the subject. The weight of evidence examined, however, will not support a different conclusion, particularly when one analyzes the conduct of tactical units at Field Army and lower echelons of command. In this century the soldiers of the German Army have undergone two severe tests. It remains only for history to establish the answer to this question: Has this been the German Army’s guilt or the German Army’s fate?

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1976 and based upon the extensive use of original archival material, this book provides a detailed account of the 2 years in which the German army enjoyed unprecedented power and influence. The rise of Hindenburg and Ludendorff is seen against the background of the failure of the army to win a decisive victory in the early stages of the war. The book provides insights into the dynamics of German militarism and imperialism, and is an important contribution to the discussion of the continuity of German history.
Book Synopsis The Wehrmacht's Last Stand by : Robert M. Citino
Download or read book The Wehrmacht's Last Stand written by Robert M. Citino and published by University Press of Kansas. This book was released on 2020-07-09 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By 1943, the war was lost, and most German officers knew it. Three quarters of a century later, the question persists: What kept the German army going in an increasingly hopeless situation? Where some historians have found explanations in the power of Hitler or the role of ideology, Robert M. Citino, the world’s leading scholar on the subject, posits a more straightforward solution: Bewegungskrieg, the way of war cultivated by the Germans over the course of history. In this gripping account of German military campaigns during the final phase of World War II, Citino charts the inevitable path by which Bewegungskrieg, or a “war of movement,” inexorably led to Nazi Germany’s defeat. The Wehrmacht’s Last Stand analyzes the German Totenritt, or “death ride,” from January 1944—with simultaneous Allied offensives at Anzio and Ukraine—until May 1945, the collapse of the Wehrmacht in the field, and the Soviet storming of Berlin. In clear and compelling prose, and bringing extensive reading of the German-language literature to bear, Citino focuses on the German view of these campaigns. Often very different from the Allied perspective, this approach allows for a more nuanced and far-reaching understanding of the last battles of the Wehrmacht than any now available. With Citino’s previous volumes, Death of the Wehrmacht and The Wehrmacht Retreats, The Wehrmacht’s Last Stand completes a uniquely comprehensive picture of the German army’s strategy, operations, and performance against the Allies in World War II.

Book excerpt: Compiled by British Intelligence, for restricted official issue by the General Staff, German Army Handbook of April 1918, is a comprehensive assessment of the German Army during the latter stages of the First World War. Illustrated throughout with plates, diagrams, charts, tables and maps, it provides a detailed breakdown of the army, covering all aspects from recruiting and training, mobilization, command and organization, weapons and signals to transportation, medical and veterinary services, and uniform. The German Army Handbook of 1918 was a remarkable achievement. It provides solutions to many questions that histories of the First Word War and accounts of its battles are unable answer. It shows how the static conventions of trench warfare usurped the traditional role of cavalry, and how the German Army were able to take advantage of the dominance of the machine-gun on the Western Front in 1915.

The initial period revolves around the early days of the Weimar Republic and the efforts of the General Staff to restore order following the defeat in World War I. During this period the German Army was augmented by independent "Free Corps" units, some of which were comprised of revolutionary elements, and out of which arose a threat to the existence of the German Army. The second period centers around the dominant personalities of Generaloberst Hans von Seeckt and Generalmajor Kurt von Schleicher, the former responsible for the development of the Reichswehr. While Chief of the Truppenamt or General Staff, General von Seeckt brought order to Germany and provided the stability that offered the leaders of the Wei.
