Download or read book The Gentle Giant of Dynamite Hill written by Helen Shores Lee and published by HarperChristian + ORM. This book was released on 2012-08-28 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These are the firsthand accounts of sisters Helen and Barbara Shores growing up with their father, Arthur Shores, a prominent Civil Rights attorney, during the 60s in the Jim Crow south Birmingham district—a frequent target of the Ku Klux Klan. Between 1948 and 1963, some 50 unsolved Klan bombings happened in Smithfield where the Shores family lived, earning their neighborhood the nickname “Dynamite Hill.” Due to his work, Shores’ daughter, Barbara, barely survived a kidnapping attempt. Twice, in 1963, Klan members bombed their home, sending Theodora to the hospital with a brain concussion and killing Tasso, the family’s cocker spaniel. The family narrowly escaped a third bombing attempt on their home in the spring of 1965. The Gentle Giant of Dynamite Hill is an incredible story of a family’s unfair suffering, but also of the Shores’ overcoming. This family’s sacrificial commitment, courage, determination, and triumph inspire us today through this story and the selfless service, work, and lives of Helen Shores Lee and Barbara Sylvia Shores.

Book excerpt: This thrilling story sets in cosmopolitan Dubai follows the lives of characters who, despite their wildly different backgrounds and heritages, are brought together by a determination to survive in a world where sex is a commodity and terrorism and business go hand in hand. Waleed Adam, who goes under the name of ‘the prince,’ is a victim of political complications and conflict in the Middle East and ends up as a gang leader. His trusted assistant Salem flees to Iraq and joins forces with the Cobra Group, which is involved in drug smuggling, among other things. As he doesn’t want to be involved with drugs or take a minor role in the gang, the prince flees Syria to start a new life in Dubai. He is soon living in a nightmare and risks becoming a victim of the proxy war in that part of the world. The prince takes the opportunity to run the 10 Tola Bar, a haven for the elite looking for fun and prostitutes struggling to live. Most of the bar regulars have fled dictator regimes as he has. One of these is Sonya, a Russian dominatrix and prostitute, who has recently arrived from Libya. Her involvement with high-ranking officers and officials close to Muammar al-Gaddafi leads her to work for Russian intelligence. Also, there is Ana, one of the millions of victims of Mao Zedong, the founding father of the People’s Republic of China. She is forced to work as a prostitute and later becomes a spy who betrays the prince before meeting a brutal death. Another bar regular is Noor Ali, who considers that Iran is no longer his home while the theocrats are in power. Since leaving, his life has taken an unexpected direction. He becomes involved with the Iranian Office of Liberation Movements and works directly with Major Azartash, an influential officer in the Jerusalem Forces. Noor Ali’s actions create a turning point in Sonya and the prince’s lives when he involves them in a kidnapping mission. He promised Sonya a million dollars if she cooperates in kidnapping her friend Hamad, a Qatar royal family member. The prince is promised the same for acting as a mediator. But the kidnapping mission ends in disaster, leads to horrible consequences of revenge and counter revenge. Through the novel’s breathtaking conflicts, the reader will discover like never before the secret life’s ambiance in the Middle East.

As light is cast on his father, attention turns to his birth mother, but when he goes in search of the person behind the photo, he encounters a conspiracy of silence. His quest for information, however, reveals not only the truth about his mother's life but exposes the fault lines in his own, and Chris finds the price of knowledge increasingly heavy. Download or read book Strictly Dynamite written by Eve Golden and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2023-09-19 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before Salma Hayek, Eva Longoria, and Penelope Cruz, there was Lupe Velez—one of the first Latin-American stars to sweep past the xenophobia of old Hollywood and pave the way for future icons from around the world. Her career began in the silent era, when her beauty was enough to make it onto the silver screen, but with the rise of talkies, Velez could no longer hope to hide her Mexican accent. Yet Velez proved to be a talented dramatic and comedic actress (and singer) and was much more versatile than Greta Garbo, Katharine Hepburn, Gloria Swanson, and other legends of the time. Velez starred in such films as Hot Pepper (1933), Strictly Dynamite (1934), and Hollywood Party (1934), and her popularity peaked in the 1940s after she appeared as Carmelita Fuentes in eight Mexican Spitfire films, a series created to capitalize on Velez's reputed fiery personality. The media emphasized the "Mexican Spitfire" persona, and by many accounts, Velez's private life was as colorful as the characters she portrayed on-screen. Fan magazines mythologized her mysterious childhood in Mexico, while mainstream publications obsessed over the drama of her romances with Gary Cooper, Erich Maria Remarque, and John Gilbert, along with her stormy marriage to Johnny Weissmuller. In 1944, a pregnant and unmarried Velez died of an intentional drug overdose. Her tumultuous life and the circumstances surrounding her early death have been the subject of speculation and controversy. In Strictly Dynamite: The Sensational Life of Lupe Velez, author Eve Golden uses extensive research to separate fact from fiction and offer a thorough and riveting examination of the real woman beneath the gossip columns' caricature. Through astute analysis of the actress's filmography and interviews, Golden illuminates the path Velez blazed through Hollywood. Her success was unexpected and extraordinary at a time when a distinctive accent was an obstacle, and yet very few books have focused entirely on Velez's life and career. Written with evenhandedness, humor, and empathy, this biography finally gives the remarkable Mexican actress the unique and nuanced portrait she deserves.
Download or read book Mr. Dynamite written by Meredith Brosnan and published by Dalkey Archive Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jarieth Prendergast is an ex-pat Irishman, an aging punk rocker, a film snob, a copy-shop employee, and a truly desperate man. His marriage is in tatters and his career as an avant-garde artist is a non-starter. As the book opens, Jarleth receives a letter from his lawyer about a possible inheritance from his Aunt, and promptly falls into fits of delusion as hilarious as they are utterly pathetic. An extraordinary first novel that melds an Irish writer's high style and penchant for belly laughs with the grotesque smash-and-grab energy of pre-9/11 New York.
Download or read book More Dynamite written by Craig Raine and published by Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2014-06-01 with total page 923 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More Dynamite anthologizes a wealth of essays by a writer with one of the keenest critical eyes of his generation. Craig Raine—poet, critic, novelist, Oxford don, and editor—turns his fearsome and unflinching gaze on subjects ranging from Kafka to Koons, Beckett to Babel. He waxes lyrical about Ron Mueck's hyperreal sculptures and reassesses the metafiction of David Foster Wallace. For Raine, no element of cultural output is insignificant, be it cinema, fiction, poetry, or installation art. Finding solace in both literature and art alike, and finding moments of truth and beauty where others had stopped looking, More Dynamite will reinvigorate readers, challenge our perceptions of the classics, and wonderfully affirm our love of good writing, new and old. This extensive collection of essays is a crash course in 20th century artistic endeavor—nothing short of a master class in high culture from one of the most discerning minds in contemporary British letters.

Book Synopsis The Day Wall Street Exploded by : Beverly Gage
Download or read book The Day Wall Street Exploded written by Beverly Gage and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-01-28 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just after noon on September 16, 1920, as hundreds of workers poured onto Wall Street for their lunchtime break, a horse-drawn cart packed with dynamite exploded in a spray of metal and fire, turning the busiest corner of the financial center into a war zone. Thirty-nine people died and hundreds more lay wounded, making the Wall Street explosion the worst terrorist attack in U.S. history until the Oklahoma City bombing. In The Day Wall Street Exploded, Beverly Gage tells the story of that once infamous but now largely forgotten event. Based on thousands of pages of Bureau of Investigation reports, this historical detective saga traces the four-year hunt for the perpetrators, a worldwide effort that spread as far as Italy and the new Soviet nation. It also gives readers the decades-long but little-known history of homegrown terrorism that helped to shape American society a century ago. The book delves into the lives of victims, suspects, and investigators: world banking power J.P. Morgan, Jr.; labor radical "Big Bill" Haywood; anarchist firebrands Emma Goldman and Luigi Galleani; "America's Sherlock Holmes," William J. Burns; even a young J. Edgar Hoover. It grapples as well with some of the most controversial events of its day, including the rise of the Bureau of Investigation, the federal campaign against immigrant "terrorists," the grassroots effort to define and protect civil liberties, and the establishment of anti-communism as the sine qua non of American politics. Many Americans saw the destruction of the World Trade Center as the first major terrorist attack on American soil, an act of evil without precedent. The Day Wall Street Exploded reminds us that terror, too, has a history. Praise for the hardcover: "Outstanding." --New York Times Book Review "Ms. Gage is a storyteller...she leaves it to her readers to draw their own connections as they digest her engaging narrative." --The New York Times "Brisk, suspenseful and richly documented" --The Chicago Tribune "An uncommonly intelligent, witty and vibrant account. She has performed a real service in presenting such a complicated case in such a fair and balanced way." --San Francisco Chronicle
