Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ihis study examines the use of the term "sinner" in Luke -Acts. `There is at present no scholarly consensus on the identity of the "sinner" in the Synoptic Gospels. Although the term is important in the Gospel of Luke, few works target the role of the sinner in it. Even fewer address the curious absence of "sinner" in Acts. Lukes narrative of Jesus's mission to "sinners," together with the comments about Gentiles in the Gospel, prepare readers for the mission to Gentiles in Acts. Luke provides a link for readers by demonstrating how a Jewish religious sect made up of fishermen, toll-collectors, and "sinners," who claimed to have found the Messiah, became a religion with a wide Gentile following. In his use of the term "sinner," Luke suggests that "repentant Jewish sinners" and "repentant Gentile followers" of Jesus represent a fulfillment of Gods promise of universal salvation. "The Sinner in Luke is an important study of a key Lucan theme. When Jesus proclaims release for the sinners as a core element of his message, it is crucial to understand who the sinner is, whether he be a tax collector or a religious leader---or even us. Dwayne Adams's study shows the moral-relational base that is central to the term in the face of other claims about this term's meaning and role in Luke. If one understands this category, one can appreciate Jesus's mission better.'The result is a study well worth reading." ---DARRELL L. BOCK, Dallas Theological Seminary.

Book excerpt: Christians know that God loves them, but can easily feel that he is perpetually disappointed and frustrated, maybe even close to giving up on them. As a result, they focus a lot—and rightly so—on what Jesus has done to appease God’s wrath for sin. But how does Jesus Christ actually feel about his people amid all their sins and failures? This book draws us to Matthew 11, where Jesus describes himself as “gentle and lowly in heart,” longing for his people to find rest in him. The gospel flows from God’s deepest heart for his people, a heart of tender love for the sinful and suffering. These chapters take readers into the depths of Christ’s very heart for sinners, diving deep into Bible passages that speak of who Christ is and encouraging readers with the affections of Christ for his people. His longing heart for sinners comforts and sustains readers in their up-and-down lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bird argues that Jesus was attempting to achieve and enact the restoration of Israel, and in continuity with other strands of Jewish belief, Jesus conceived of the restoration of Israel as resulting in the salvation of the gentiles. Jesus' mission was Israel-centric, but he espoused a view of restoration that was indebted to certain strands of Israel's sacred traditions where the gentiles are implicit beneficiaries of Israel's salvation. Since this restoration was already being partially realized in Jesus' ministry, it was becoming possible for gentiles to begin sharing in Israel's salvation in the present. Additionally, Jesus understood himself and his followers to be the new temple and the vanguard of the restored Israel who would appropriate for themselves the role of Israel and the temple in being a light to the nations. Thus, a gentile mission has its germinal roots in the aims and intentions of Jesus and was developed in a transformed situation by adherents of the early Christian movement.

In twelve chapters, Dr. Sproul examines the defining features of the biblical gospel, which alone has the power to save. In order to define the gospel, Dr. Sproul begins by examining truth about God and the necessity for a Savior in Jesus Christ, who is both God and man and who made a perfect, representative sacrifice for the sins of His people. Dr. Sproul not only maps out our need for Christ and the historical realities of His coming but also the things His very death accomplished: the justification and salvation of His people. This entails that Christ has taken upon our sin and also had given us His righteousness, which is ours by faith. To finish this presentation of the gospel, Dr. Sproul also drives home the importance of sharing it with others"--

Book excerpt: In this important study Hays argues against the mainstream that any attempt to account for the nature and method of Paul's theological language must first reckon with the centrality of narrative elements in his thought. Through an in-depth investigation of Galatians 3:1-4:11, Hays shows that the framework of Paul's thought is neither a system of doctrines nor his personal religious experience but the "sacred story" of Jesus Christ.
