Book excerpt: In the first century AD a very important and high ranking Roman official named THEOPHILUS wanted answers to questions concerning events which were clearly impacting the entire ancient Roman world. He commissioned Luke, a learned man, to investigate and report on the life of Jesus Christ. The resultant work, the Book of Luke, is an investigative account prepared by Luke, clearly a highly educated and literate individual, to his patron, a high ranking Roman official named "Theophilus." Luke addresses the book to "Most Excellent Theophilus."We know the writings of Luke had to be completed before AD 70 because they never mention the destruction of the Jewish Temple (this could never have been overlooked so it clearly had not happened yet) nor the deaths of its major figures (Peter and Paul) about which so much of the narrative is concerned. Both of them died in the mid AD 60's. The Jewish Temple was destroyed utterly and 1.1 million Jews of Jerusalem were massacred around AD 70. So, Luke wrote his works around 30 years after Jesus was crucified, buried and resurrected because Luke never mentions these cataclysmic events and he would not have failed to do so as it is so integral to his narrative. It was also important because Jesus had predicted the destruction of the Temple and its timing with great accuracy in Matthew 24 and elsewhere.The genealogy of Jesus Christ is also recorded in the book of Matthew. Between the two Gospels (Luke and Matthew) we have both the LEGAL and the BIOLOGICAL records of Jesus' lineage going all the way back to Adam and Eve. This can literally be said to be the only person in the entire history of the world for which we have such an extensive record of his family tree.We present this lineage (in diagram form) to you for your scholarly enrichment.
