Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Garnet Bracelet" is a rather short novel by Alexander Kuprin, exploring the romantic, yet unrequited emotions of the protagonist towards the love of his life. Written at the beginning of the 20th century and praised by the great names in Russian literature, Kuprin’s novel offers a valuable insight into the human soul. A beautiful and at the same time sad story, whose sorrowful tones are expressed through Beethoven’s 2nd Piano Sonata. Heartbreaking and melancholic, the story is a perfect read for those capable of experiencing enormous love. Alexander Kuprin was a Russian novelist, poet, and short-story writer, a representative of Russian critical realism. His life in the army account for his early autobiographical stories, an experience that stayed with him forever. A wielder of genuinely natural subject matter and language, Kuprin’s style is above all else tinged with passionate depiction of the human heart. However, the poverty of his family and Kuprin’s own problems with alcoholism paint a pretty gloomy picture of his years in emigration and later return to his homeland. Among his best works are "The Duel", "The Pit", "Moloch" and "The Garnet Bracelet".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently unearthed in the archives of Stalin's secret police, the NKVD, Nina Lugovskaya's diary offers rare insight into the life of a teenage girl in Stalin's Russia-when fear of arrest was a fact of daily life. Like Anne Frank, thirteen-year-old Nina is conscious of the extraordinary dangers around her and her family, yet she is preoccupied by ordinary teenage concerns: boys, parties, her appearance, who she wants to be when she grows up. As Nina records her most personal emotions and observations, herreflections shape a diary that is as much a portrait of her intense inner world as it is the Soviet outer one. Preserved here, these markings-the evidence used to convict Nina as a "counterrevolutionary"- offer today's reader a fascinating perspective on the era in which she lived.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As I make my way through various on-line and brick-and-mortar book stores, I am increasingly convinced that Russian literature is woefully under-represented. One can always find War and Peace or Crime and Punishment, but to think that is all there is to it?! In all fairness, it would take a separate store chain or a huge server bank to accommodate all the works that would provide a reasonably comprehensive picture of Russian literature. However, I can't help feeling disheartened when seeing, how much precious shelf space is dedicated to the mediocre romance novels and how little - to the works by Alexander Pushkin, Mikhail Lermontov, Anton Chekhov, Ivan Turgenev and Fyodor Tyutchev, to say nothing of Nikolai Gogol, Sergei Yesenin, Anna Akhmatova, Marina Tsvetayeva, Igor Severyanin, Alexander Blok, Alexei Tolstoy (yes, there was more than one famous Tolstoy in Russian literature) and many others. There is an entire population of poems and stories you have in all likelihood never met.

Book Synopsis When Pigs Could Fly and Bears Could Dance by : Miriam Neirick
Download or read book When Pigs Could Fly and Bears Could Dance written by Miriam Neirick and published by University of Wisconsin Pres. This book was released on 2012-09-21 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than seven decades the circuses enjoyed tremendous popularity in the Soviet Union. How did the circus—an institution that dethroned figures of authority and refused any orderly narrative structure—become such a cultural mainstay in a state known for blunt and didactic messages? Miriam Neirick argues that the variety, flexibility, and indeterminacy of the modern circus accounted for its appeal not only to diverse viewers but also to the Soviet state. In a society where government-legitimating myths underwent periodic revision, the circus proved a supple medium of communication. Between 1919 and 1991, it variously displayed the triumph of the Bolshevik revolution, the beauty of the new Soviet man and woman, the vulnerability of the enemy during World War II, the prosperity of the postwar Soviet household, and the Soviet mission of international peace—all while entertaining the public with the acrobats, elephants, and clowns. With its unique ability to meet and reconcile the demands of both state and society, the Soviet circus became the unlikely darling of Soviet culture and an entertainment whose usefulness and popularity stemmed from its ambiguity.
