Book excerpt: Sometime in the near future, Lionel, a computer nerd, lives alone with his sick cat, Buddha. His flat overlooks the high street where only a few rundown shops remain in business, including his friend, the old Caribbean gentleman Mr Barber. Lionel, mixed race, born in Kenya, was adopted by a white family. But, apart from his gorgeous, abrasive sister Lilith - his best friend and harshest critic - his family have deserted him. Lionel plays games because he's a coward who can't handle human interaction, Lilith says, before one of her frequent disappearances. But when Lionel puts his headset on, and enters CawrQuest he becomes Ludi, the fighter and the lover. He's free. Here he doesn't need to face his past, bullied by his adoptive brothers, and the shocking event he refuses to remember. Still, the 'real' world won't go away. Nor will Crystal, the haunted Anime girl who needs to be saved from the 'adult health centre' opposite his flat. Soon nothing adds up. Why are people beginning to look at him nervously? Why do the outcasts at work suddenly want to be his friend? Has Lilith finally disappeared for good? As reality and the game blur, Lionel and Ludi are assaulted on all sides. As Lionel struggles to unravel what's happening to him, Ludi tries to rescue the people he loves before the game is altered forever.
Book Synopsis Cricket and Contemporary Society in Britain by : Russell Holden
Download or read book Cricket and Contemporary Society in Britain written by Russell Holden and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-29 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the declining status of cricket within contemporary British society after the high-water mark of England’s Ashes victory in 2005. It considers the deep roots of the game within British national life as well as its ever-changing nature, and reflects upon the current significance and relevance of a sport that many still perceive as deeply traditional and conservative in outlook. Adopting a socio-political approach, the book offers new perspectives on both the contemporary realities of modern cricket and the social, cultural and political condition of modern Britain. Rather than focusing on personality and the detail of match history, the book looks at how the sport has coped with wider societal changes, such as those in Afro-Caribbean and South Asian communities, and how this has demanded adaptation by cricket’s governing authorities. The book also considers the international context in which the game continues to develop and how the initiative with new formats such as Twenty20 has been lost to other cricketing nations, and it offers insight into the continued expansion and recent professionalization of the women’s game, hinting at ways in which cricket as a whole could recapture the public’s imagination. Cricket and Contemporary Society in Britain is an invaluable resource for those studying the sociology of sport, sport history, cultural studies, the politics of sport, cultural identity, sport management and sport development. It is also a fascinating read for anybody with an interest in cricket or in the value of sport in an era of rapid socio-economic, political and cultural change.
Book Synopsis The Resolution of Conflict by : Morton Deutsch
Download or read book The Resolution of Conflict written by Morton Deutsch and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1973-01-01 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The basic question to which this book is addressed is not how to eliminate or prevent conflict but rather how to make it productive, or minimally, how to prevent it from being destructive. I shall not deal with situations of "pure" conflict in which inevitably one side loses what the other gains. My interest is in conflict where there is a mixture of cooperative and competitive interests, where a variety of outcomes is possible; mutual loss, gain for one and loss of the other, and mutual gain. Thus my query can be restated, as an investigation of the conditions under which the participants will evolve a cooperative relationship or a competitive relationship in a situation which permits either. -- from the introduction.

Download or read book Game Addiction written by Neils Clark and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2009-06-08 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An eleven-year-old boy strangled an elderly woman for the equivalent of five dollars in 2007, then buried her body under a thin layer of sand. He told the police that he needed the money to play online videogames. Just a month later, an eight-year-old Norwegian boy saved his younger sister’s life by threatening an attacking moose and then feigning death when the moose attacked him—skills he said he learned while playing World of Warcraft. As these two instances show, videogames affect the minds, bodies, and lives of millions of gamers, negatively and positively. This book approaches videogame addiction from a cross-disciplinary perspective, bridging the divide between liberal arts academics and clinical researchers. The topic of addiction is examined neutrally, using accepted research in neuroscience, media studies, and developmental psychology.

Download or read book Beyond Adaptation written by Phyllis Frus and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2010-03-16 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some film and novel revisions go so far beyond adaptation that they demand a new designation. This critical collection explores movies, plays, essays, comics and video games that supersede adaptation to radically transform their original sources. Fifteen essays investigate a variety of texts that rework everything from literary classics to popular children’s books, demonstrating how these new, stand-alone creations critically engage their sources and contexts. Particular attention is paid to parody, intertextuality, and fairy-tale transformations in the examination of these works, which occupy a unique narrative and creative space.
