Book excerpt: This book initiates the descriptions of the practical performance of different hysterectomies with conventional and robotically assisted laparoscopy, laparotomy and vaginal surgery. Laparoscopic hysterectomy has been out as an additional technique for hysterectomies for the last couple of decades. As the necessary light, augmentation and advanced skill has only been introduced into this already 200 year old surgical procedure within the last few decades by laparoscopy, the editors aim to look at the laparoscopic procedures followed by the traditional techniques of hysterectomy with laparotomy and vaginal surgery.

The nineteenth edition has been thoroughly updated, integrating clinical material with the latest scientific advances. With an additional editor and new contributing authors, the new edition combines authoritative detail while signposting essential knowledge. Retaining the favoured textual features of preceding editions, each chapter is highly structured, with overviews, definitions, aetiology, clinical features, investigation, treatments, key points and additional reading where appropriate. Together with its companion Gynaecology by Ten Teachers, the volume has been edited carefully to ensure consistency of structure, style and level of detail, as well as avoiding overlap of material. For almost a century the 'Ten Teachers' titles have together found favour with students, lecturers and practitioners alike. The nineteenth editions continue to provide an accessible 'one stop shop' in obstetrics for a new generation of doctors.

Book excerpt: This is a unique book in that it brings together the two key investigative techniques in Gynaecology and Obstetrics, namely ultrasound and endoscopy. So often in the past they were regarded by their exponents as rival techniques but it is now recognised that they are complementary to each other. Consequently future trainees in endoscopy should become efficient in transvaginal sonography and vice versa. Ultrasound can be used to study the morphology of the pelvic organs such as the endometrium, myometrium and ovaries, and being non-invasive, safe and convenient can be repeated as often as is deemed necessary to monitor changes over time; for example in the investigation of the infertile woman the development of the dominant follicle, the maturation of the endometrium and the formation of the corpus luteum can be documented throughout the menstrual cycle while growth of ovarian cysts can be precisely measured to determine the need for surgery. A seldom-mentioned strength of the ultrasound examination is its interactive quality, for example by performing abdominal palpation during the scan, the mobility of the uterus and ovaries can be assessed. Also the images as they appear can be shown to the patient to aid understanding. Ultrasound can also determine function and the use of Doppler has been used for example to access endometrial receptivity, follicular maturity and the likelihood of malignancy in the endometrium or ovary.

Book excerpt: "This book sets out how the concept of ambulatory gynaecology can be applied to the main areas of gynaecological practice. It describes how national guidelines can be integrated into modern gynaecological practice in the context of the Government's National Health Service (NHS) plan and provides an essential guide to all practising clinicians." "A change from traditional care pathways to more cost effective, patient-centred approaches to medical practice lies at the heart of modern health service management. A 'see and treat' management philosophy is growing. 'One stop' clinics and 'day surgery' operations are replacing traditional outpatient consultations and inpatient surgery and the term 'ambulatory gynaecology' is being adopted to describe this philosophy."--BOOK JACKET.
