Book Synopsis European Agriculture by : Brian Gardner
Download or read book European Agriculture written by Brian Gardner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-04-10 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) is central to both economic and environmental developments in Europe. But with the advent of new environmental legislation and political change in Europe the CAP faces increasing pressure to reform. European Agriculture provides a comprehensive breakdown of the workings of the CAP and its impact on farming in Europe. The author discusses every aspect of European agricultural policy, production and trade, from environmental contraints and the impact of biotechnology, to the role of European farming in the world food supply system. Posing direct questions about the recent 1992 agricultural reform, the 1994 GATT agreement and the reasons for the expensive continuation of the CAP, European Agriculture analyses the economic, political and environmental implications of pursuing present farming policy and provides a provocative commentary on the agricultural future of Europe.
Book Synopsis European Agriculture by : Frank Fuller
Download or read book European Agriculture written by Frank Fuller and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an in-depth look at Europe's changing agricultural and food markets, focusing on the impacts of recent policy reforms, enlargement of the European Union (EU), and trade liberalisation. The papers included in this book braid together four important themes in European agriculture and food markets: the impacts of EU enlargement on productivity growth and catching up in the Central and Eastern European countries (CEECs), the influence of food quality standards on market structures in the CEECs and on trade, the impacts of common agricultural policy (CAP) reforms on EU and world markets, and the costs of adjusting to CAP reforms in specific sectors. The insights provided in these papers into the empirical interactions between policies, institutions, and market outcomes, both domestically and internationally, are valuable to policy makers and researchers interested in the future of European agriculture.
Book Synopsis The Experience Economy as the Future for European Agriculture and Food? by : Johan F. M. Swinnen
Download or read book The Experience Economy as the Future for European Agriculture and Food? written by Johan F. M. Swinnen and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As recently as a century ago, one out of two people in Europe was employed in the agricultural sector. Today agriculture represents only a small fraction of total employment in most EU member states. What makes this decline in agricultural employment even more striking is that this evolution has occurred despite substantial EU subsidies to support farmers' income. Given the apparent ineffectiveness of government support in keeping agricultural employment steady, it is worth considering which farming activities are likely to be successful in the economy of the 21st century. We argue in this paper that a potential growth path for European agriculture is the “experience economy” in which consumers are willing to pay premium prices for products and services that provide additional intangible “experiences”. We discuss the growth potential of the “experience economy” in the agricultural sector and conclude that it is worthwhile to consider the experience economy as a pathway for future farm growth.

Book Synopsis Resilient and Sustainable Farming Systems in Europe by : Miranda P. M. Meuwissen
Download or read book Resilient and Sustainable Farming Systems in Europe written by Miranda P. M. Meuwissen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-05-05 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What exactly is resilience and how can it be enhanced? Farming systems in Europe are rapidly evolving while at the same time being under threat, as seen by the disappearance of dozens of farms every day. Farming systems must become more resilient in response to growing economic, environmental, institutional, and social challenges facing Europe's agriculture. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for enhanced resilience has become even more apparent and continues to be an overarching guiding principle of EU policy making. Resilience challenges and strategies are framed within four main processes affecting decision making in agriculture: risk management, farm demographics, governance and agricultural practices. This empirical focus looks at very diverse contexts, with eleven case studies from Belgium, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Spain and Sweden. This study will help determine the future and sustainability of European farming systems. This title is available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.
