Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Future of Africa If we turn from yesterday to to-day, what have we Africa - but yesterday chiefly a name and a by-word, to-day assuming rank as a great world force, covered with an ad vancing network of civilisation, a region of illimitable possibilities. The causes that have furthered this development, the purpose that underlies it, the responsibility the Christian world bears towards its furtherance, such questions constitute the theme of this book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from North America and Africa: Their Past, Present, and Future Considering all the circumstances which have attended us, though the world is six thousand years old, there has been more accomplished in a century by our government and people, some of whose ancestry we1e slaves less than three thousand ye ago, and who fled from persecution in search of rest and peace, than any peepl e in any ten centu ries of the world's history. How is this to be accounted for? Not by human wisdom oi strength alone. For cen turies ago man was learned in the cuts and sciences. To a wonderful extent, but depreciated in both until he well nigh lost all that he ever possessed. Then se must look to a highe1 and purer souiee for light to enable us to solve this problem. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Future of Africa: Being Addresses, Sermons, Etc;, Etc;, Delivered in the Republic of Liberia Most of the papers contained in this volume were addressed to public assemblies in the Republic of Li beria, and, at their request, a few Of them have al ready appeared in print. The remaining articles, now for the first time published, relate, in an equal degree, to the interests of Africa and the negro race. They were prepared, on their several occasions, under a keen sense Of responsibility, in the new field of duty on the coast of Africa, whither God has called several thousands of the sons of Africa from their former American homes. They are now published with the humble but sober conviction, that the trains of thought they present are worthy the attention and consideration of the people to whom they were ad dressed; if', perchance, they Should prove undeserving the notice of others. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Future of America and Africa: An Essay Showing Our Whole Duty to the Black Man, Consistent With Our Own Safety and Glory The following pages are addressed alike to the American of the white race, and the free Negro of the United States. They embrace the outline of an extensive system of reform, including the ulti mate emancipation of the entire African race; not by the slow process of colonization, by a private society with slender means; nor by the headlong policy of abolition, which asks of the master sa orifices that never will be - never can be made. This system includes also the permanent and etico tual establishment of common schools, with ample provision for their maintenance; and it provides ih cidentally for the gradual extinguishment of the debts of those states which are now burdened with such responsibilities, and for many other public facilities to all the states, without undue or inequit able advantage to any of them. Nor, in effecting these desirable purposes, does it propose any un constitutional or anti-american proceeding. The reader will be startled, perhaps, at the vast ness of such a scheme, Probably, he may exclaim. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Partition of Africa There is every reason to be satisfied with the reception which the first edition of this work has met with. While one or two German and French papers have charged me with Chauvinism, others declare that my treatment of the enterprises of these countries in Africa has been quite impartial. In revising the present edition I have endeavoured to modify such passages as might be Open to a charge of unfair patriotic bias. This is the case especially with respect to Portugal, for many valuable suggestions with reference to which I am indebted to my friend Mr. J. Batalha Reis. Yet withal, I am afraid it remains evident that I am not indifferent to my country's success in the race with her rivals. Much has taken place in Africa during the two years that have elapsed since the publication of the first edition. This has necessitated extensive revision of several of the later chapters, and an addition of some seventy pages to the work. The book has been care fully revised throughout, and important additions have been made to the maps. I have again to express my indebtedness to the friends mentioned in the preface to the first edition for valuable help in preparing the new edition. My thanks are also due to Count Joachim Pfeil, Mr. F. C. Selous, Mr. H. H. Johnston, c.b., and Mr. Herbert Canning. There is no hope for a return of those glories which ages upon ages past adorned Egypt; the might of Carthage has long since gone for ever the whole of North Africa has been divided, and the signs of improvement are very limited. In other parts of the continent, however, new life is springing, channels for the introduction of civilization are constantly ap pearing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Voyage Along the Western Coast, or Newest Africa: A Description of Newest Africa, or the Africa of to-Day and the Immediate Future O the men and women of to-day Africa is a Great Unknown Land through which explorers fight their way and return with stories of the horrible and the marvel ous - stories too often told for no higher purpose than to make a book sell, or a lecture interesting. I admit that many of these stories are true, for I have myself been through some of these experiences; but it is only a small portion of the truth concerning this great continent, just as the horrors of Indian warfare at the present time are only a small part of the truth concerning our own country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from British East Africa: Past, Present, and Future Strength of his tribe. During the warrior period, and until at the age of somewhere about thirty, they become an Elder or Meru and are allowed to marry, the Morans generally live in distinct villages or Kraals, in sexual intimacy with the immature girls of the tribe until the latter have approached their woman hood, when they also undergo an operation; and a girl who shows any objection to follow the universal custom and choose a lover is often held up to scorn and derision. After marriage the Meru is looked upon as an old man, and joins in the tribal councils, while he goes back to the bow and arrow of his boyhood, and generally lives a life of ease, and occasionally of debauch. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "There I was, standing alone, unable to cry as I said goodbye to Sidimé Laye, my best friend, and to the revolution that had opened the door of modernity for me--the revolution that had invented me." This book gives us the story of a quest for a childhood friend, for the past and present, and above all for an Africa that is struggling to find its future. In 1996 Manthia Diawara, a distinguished professor of film and literature in New York City, returns to Guinea, thirty-two years after he and his family were expelled from the newly liberated country. He is beginning work on a documentary about Sékou Touré, the dictator who was Guinea's first post-independence leader. Despite the years that have gone by, Diawara expects to be welcomed as an insider, and is shocked to discover that he is not. The Africa that Diawara finds is not the one on the verge of barbarism, as described in the Western press. Yet neither is it the Africa of his childhood, when the excitement of independence made everything seem possible for young Africans. His search for Sidimé Laye leads Diawara to profound meditations on Africa's culture. He suggests solutions that might overcome the stultifying legacy of colonialism and age-old social practices, yet that will mobilize indigenous strengths and energies. In the face of Africa's dilemmas, Diawara accords an important role to the culture of the diaspora as well as to traditional music and literature--to James Brown, Miles Davis, and Salif Kéita, to Richard Wright, Spike Lee, and the ancient epics of the griots. And Diawara's journey enlightens us in the most disarming way with humor, conversations, and well-told tales.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Civil war, famine, genocide, AIDS--the peoples of Africa have endured horrific human tragedies. Those crises plus widespread economic, political, and social instability have combined to produce what some consider a dire and nearly hopeless situation. Even as this book was going to press, the leaders of the G-8 nations were meeting to talk about what could be done to "aid Africa" in these critical times. A careful look at history would indicate that the answer must come from within Africa and from the African people themselves, not from other nations or the economic programs and solutions they propose. The rapid rise of a Christian social ethics movement as an alternative perspective focused precisely on addressing Africa's challenges using the spiritual resources of its own people is providing a hopeful solution and a timely and powerful coping mechanism for African peoples. One of the leaders of this movement is Emmanuel Katongole, a Catholic priest from Uganda. In A Future for Africa, Katongole wrestles with concrete problems like the AIDS epidemic and widespread military conflicts, as well as fundamental, systemic ones, like poverty, corruption, and tribalism. He then offers faith-filled solutions based on the power and example of Christian community and Christian moral imagination. Katongole's radical message is that a political ethic based on Christian principles as taught in the Scriptures is the necessary foundation for healing, reconciliation, and rebuilding the continent.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from North America and Africa: Their Past, Present and Future and Key to the Negro Problem One of the problems of not only the South but of the entire nation, for the past thirty-eight years, has been the "Negro Problem." Any one who can add to its solution is a benefactor to both races in America. This pamphlet has three things to recommend it. First, it is on a living issue, that is attracting the best thought of our nation. One method of solving this vexed question has been set forth in these pages. The idea of colonizing the Negro is not a new one. It has had and still has the cordial support of strong and influential men. The second recommendation offered to the reader, is that it is well written; in the purest English, and not an ambiguous sentence in it. The third is: the author has given this subject his best thought, and investigations, running through many years. Not only are his plan and thoughts mature, but he thoroughly believes them. The conclusions of a cultured mind, that has been directed to solve a great question, may well be considered. I commend to every one this booklet, and ask a patient perusal of its pages. It is based on unclassified publications (friendly and unfriendly) located for the most part on the open shelves of The Army Library, Headquarters, Department of the Army, Pentagon.' Africa's future is of direct concern to the United States. The desire of Africans to shape their own destiny continues to find the natural and logical response in America, where freedom, human rights, and self-determination for all mankind, are considered to be the inevitable and just course of human progress.
