Book excerpt: Zusammenfassung This book investigates the speech of non-ethnic Fulfulde speakers in Maroua, Northern Cameroon, focussed on the Christian community, where the language is adopted as evangelistic instrument beside French. Three key reasons motivate our investigation. First: Context - Fulfulde is embedded in a multilingual contact situation with Indo-European languages (French, English) and many other local languages belonging to Afro-Asiatic, Nilo-Saharan and Niger-Congo phyla. Second: Fulfulde as lingua franca in the region. This status is unique compared to the situation in other countries such as Senegal, Chad or Sudan where it is mainly an intraethnic medium of communication. Third: In contrast to the common perception of Fulfulde as the language of a Muslim community - here we are targeting the Christian Fulfulde speakers who share the language as well as the Bible (translated into Fulfulde) as common goods for interethnic communication in their religious activities.

Book excerpt: This thesis aims at understanding Bukusu death and burial rites in Bungoma and Kimilili, Western Kenya. The research was carried out among Bukusu in general, with a particular attention to Bukusu Quakers of different gender, age categories, married and single. The study explored traditional death and burial rites as practiced by Ababukusu today in relation to Christian funeral rites. Cultural diversity and exposure to practices of neighboring ethnic groups, and to Christianity, have played an important role in the evolution of traditional death rites. Those who become Christians usually adopt the Christian burial rite and abandon the complicated traditional rituals. Africans yearning for modernization have often found themselves at crossroads when choosing which death rites to follow. The study has revealed that Bukusu Quakers of Western Kenya continue to perform traditional death and burial rites because they believe that if they do not perform rites of purification, the spirit of the deceased will harm them. Examination of traditional ritual process and Christian funeral rites reveals that Bukusu Christians live with combination of fears: of misfortunes from ancestors, and of rejection by the Christian community. Because they feel that the Christian funeral rites lack important elements, they are forced to integrate traditional and Christian rites. Thus emerges the behavior pattern of "Christian by day, African by night." Church leaders have become more concerned with issues of death and burial rites, and some still hold onto the early missionary prejudices that African traditional rites of passage are evil and demonic. The research, therefore, suggests the necessity of an inculturation process among Bukusu of Western Kenya Province in their interactions with Christianity. Traditional death and burial rites among Bukusu cry out to be preserved for the sake of family welfare and safety. Many traditional rituals and practices have value because they bind people together; however, those that engage people in immorality or lead to financial ruin need not to be preserved. Changes in the traditional funeral rites are inevitable and to be expected. Community members ought not to ignore and reject those which are compatible with modernity and Christianity. The study concludes that a dialogue is needed between African traditional religion and Christianity in order to create an environment which allows people to continue with their cultural practices insofar as they are compatible with Christianity. This thesis recommends the establishment of competent family ministries in the various churches with qualified pastoral agents to help people as they move to other stages of their lives. Traditional rites of passage, especially funeral rites, with all their rich cultural backgrounds, should be utilized by churches to comfort the bereaved.

The five essays in this section deal with the Bible, Theology and Ecumenism. The subjects of theological methods, contextual hermeneutics, and appropriate curriculum are given special attention. Of course even foundational issues cannot be discussed in a vacuum and so each of the essays addresses these foundational subjects in the light of African realities. Part Two deals with Contemporary Issues. It is particularly in this section that the traditional themes in African theology have been somewhat displaced by concerns which are today very pressing indeed. Three essays are devoted to the question of HIV/AIDS. This disease, which has devastated the African continent, demands a theological and practical response from those who claim to follow Jesus Christ. If the churches do not respond to this crisis with energy and determination we should not be surprised if the next generation wonders whether the Gospel has the power which we claim that it has. Two essays address the question of Islam and Muslim-Christian Relations in Africa. The resurgence of Islam in the world today is a concern of many. For those who believe in Jesus, this is a challenge which demands much wisdom and love. How should we respond to our Muslim neighbours? What are appropriate and thoughtful ways to share the love of Christ? Two further essays appear under the title of The Marginalized. This could, of course, be a much large section. Those who suffer from AIDS could be included in this number, and one might have expected to see at least one essay on the place of women. In this volume, however, the disabled and youth are highlighted. Both groups are clearly in need of the attention of the churches, and both groups are clearly misunderstood and neglected. The final section of Part Two contains essays, which focus attention on Theological Paedagogy. All of the other contributions to this volume make suggestions and arguments about curriculum, resources, and issues of concern for theological educators. The causal aim of this book is that these essays may help us to reflect in an intentional way on the implications of contemporary realities for the future of theological education.
