Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fundamental Problems of Metaphysics Though I have often had occasion to touch upon the subjects treated in this book, it is yet doubtful if I should have written this work without important request behind. In the his torical references, I have had to excise portions - particularly in the Mediaeval period - of what I had written, with a view to making the work more suitable for readers in a generation that does not reckon patience among its greatest virtues. Primarily prepared for philosophical readers, those parts of the book which relate to subjects like the First Cause and the World Ground will not fail to interest theological readers also. An extended study of the litera ture of the subjects dealt with convinced me that there was ample need and room for such. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of the one and the many is central to ancient Greek philosophy, but surprisingly little attention has been paid to Aristotle's treatment of it in the Metaphysics. This omission is all the more surprising because the Metaphysics is one of our principal sources for thinking that the problem is central and for the views of other ancient philosophers on it.The Central Books of the Metaphysics are widely recognized as the most difficult portion of a most difficult work. Halper uses the problem of the one and the many as a lens through which to examine the Central Books. What he sees is an extraordinary degree of doctrinal cogency and argumentative coherence in a work that almost everyone else supposes to be some sort of patchwork. Rather than trying to elucidate Aristotle's doctrines-most of which have little explicitly to do with the problem, Halper holds that the problem of the one and the many, in various formulations, is the key problematic from which Aristotle begins and with which he constructs his arguments. Thus, exploring the problem of the one and the many turns out to be a way to reconstruct Aristotle's arguments in the Metaphysics. Armed with the arguments, Halper is able to see Aristotle's characteristic doctrines as conclusions. These latter are, for the most part, supported by showing that they resolve otherwise insoluble problems. Moreover, having Aristotle's arguments enables Halper to delimit those doctrines and to resolve the apparent contradiction in Aristotle's account of primary ousia, the classic problem of the Central Books. Although there is no way to make the Metaphysics easy, this very thorough treatment of the text succeeds in making it surprisingly intelligible.

The profound thinkers of the world have all believed in something in the mind deeper and higher than the fleeting phenomena of the senses. I am convinced that there are powers working which underlie and support all its intelligent exercises. If this be so it is surely of vast moment to determine what these are. This is the field to be allotted to Metaphysics. Aristotle has remarked that Metaphysics, or what he calls First Philosophy, while the first Of the sciences in the order of things, will be the last to be constructed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Realistic Universe: An Introduction to Metaphysics This volume on metaphysics is the sequel of a volume on the theory of knowledge, entitled Truth and Reality, which was published in 1911. The two volumes furnish a survey of the field of general philosophy from the point of View of pragmatic realism. This attitude which the author has been champion ing for several years is an attempt to apply scientific method to philosophic problems. The term pragmatic is used in the sense which was first advocated by C. S. Peirce, and which is defined by the author in his own terms in Truth and Reality. As applied to metaphysics the pragmatic method means that we must judge the nature of reality, in its various grades and complexities, by the consequences to the realization of human purposes, instead of by a priori assumptions. Some may pre fer the older adjectives of empirical or critica but these terms seem definitely associated with certain historical doctrines, and a new term seems to be preferable in designating the scientific tendency of today. There is need in every age of retranslating the perennial problems of philosophy into terms of living human interest; and the author hopes in a meas ure to further this movement at the present time through these volumes. In A Realistic Universe the author has tried to make vital the fundamental problems of metaphysics in terms of our present thought-world, without the cant of the past, but with a deep sense of indebtedness to the masters of all time. While the book is intended primarily for the philosophic stu dent, the aim has been to make the style as clear and simple as the problems would permit. In the use of scientific material, an effort has been made to find sources which would be intel ligible to the layman rather than to make an appearance of erudition. Some portions, such as the introductory chapter. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a letter of 1932, Karl Popper described Die beiden Grundprobleme der Erkenntnistheorie – The Two Fundamental Problems of the Theory of Knowledge – as ‘...a child of crises, above all of ...the crisis of physics.’ Finally available in English, it is a major contribution to the philosophy of science, epistemology and twentieth century philosophy generally. The two fundamental problems of knowledge that lie at the centre of the book are the problem of induction, that although we are able to observe only a limited number of particular events, science nevertheless advances unrestricted universal statements; and the problem of demarcation, which asks for a separating line between empirical science and non-science. Popper seeks to solve these two basic problems with his celebrated theory of falsifiability, arguing that the inferences made in science are not inductive but deductive; science does not start with observations and proceed to generalise them but with problems, which it attacks with bold conjectures. The Two Fundamental Problems of the Theory of Knowledge is essential reading for anyone interested in Karl Popper, in the history and philosophy of science, and in the methods and theories of science itself.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Metaphysics: A Study in First Principles Philosophy, as a special form of mental activity, seeks to answer these two questions: How is knowledge possible? What is the true nature of reality? The first question deals with the knowing subject and his relation to the Oh jcet. The aim is to give an exposition and a theory of the knowing process and to unfold its implications. The sec ond question deals with the nature of the object viewed as a thing in itself. The first question belongs to the theory of knowledge; the second belongs to metaphysics. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems in Philosophy This volume may seem to be constructed on the idea of gathering up the fragments that nothing may be lost. This precept, however, wise as it often is, does not express the law of production in the present case. A few points in philosophy invited more clear or more thorough state ment. This labor I chose to undertake directly and briefly, rather than to attempt it as a part of a more ex tended and systematic work. One evil in philosophy is the accumulation of fruitless discussions. A few positions fortunately taken may be easily lost in their practical value by the extended treatises which accompany them, traversing old ground with no sufl'icient reward. Philoso phy, above most topics, calls for an explicit statement of a few fundamental principles, and a pushing of inquiry in reference to them, till some satisfactory conclusion is reached. The present volume aims to make, in the most direct way, a contribution on the more obscure topics of philosophy. What it has to say is not, taken collectively, extended, and may be still farther reduced by the reader by confining his attention to the one or more subjects which may appeal directly to him. Only one of these discussions - that on liberty - has appeared elsewhere, and that essay has been somewhat modified.
