Peaches are grown largely for local use or are sold in a canned or dried form. The selection of grapes, melons, avocados, and citrus fruits is also well advanced and in keeping with present market requirements. A.statistical study of the Chilean fruit industry was undertaken for the first time in 1935-36 and the findings published in 1938. Although the results obtained are the best available, they-are said to be incomplete and in many cases inaccurate. Many growers failed to understand the questionnaires that they were asked to fill in, and many failed to classify their fruit according to variety. The figures represent com merciai orchards only or those plantings of more than 100 trees or 1% acres. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chile of to-Day: Its Commerce, Its Production and Its Resources; National Yearly Publication of Reference (1907-1908) Situated at the extremity of South America, between the Andes and the Pacific Ocean, amid valleys and fertile plains, Chile, thanks to the fairness of her climate, to the productive character of her soil, to the stability of her institutions, and to the perseverance of her people, holds a pre-eminent place among the world's peoples. Her exports today are more than and her imports more than - considerable sums for a country with only inhabitants, but not a sufficient sum for her territory of more than acres. In Chile mining and agriculture are the chief sources of pro duction, and manufacturing industries are developing slowly. She has, however, enormous quantities of the four elements indispensable to the making of a brilliant future - coal, waterpower, iron and copper - which to-day contribute more than anything else to a country's riches and stability. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Visit to Chile and the Nitrate Fields of Tarapaca, Etc I was invited to go out that I might see and report what had been done and what was being done, and to examine the works which had transformed the desert of Tarapaca wastes without a sign of life or vegetation - into a centre of commercial enterprise, and which had covered it with ani mated industry and prosperous life. It had been asserted in certain journals that commercial enterprises in that region were shams swindles, indeed, would be the word to use if they were what those organs described them to be - and that a railway, in which the public had invested largely, was a tramway ending in a marsh. Although I can not say I was a very Gallio in respect to these things, I certainly knew nothing of them. I told my friends that I was perfectly and altogether ignorant in that con nection. So much the better! All I would have to do was to judge for myself and relate what I saw. There was no mystery to penetrate, no theory to demolish or sus tain, no complex problems to study.
