Book Synopsis Stability of Fluid Motions I by : D. D. Joseph
Download or read book Stability of Fluid Motions I written by D. D. Joseph and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of stability aims at understanding the abrupt changes which are observed in fluid motions as the external parameters are varied. It is a demanding study, far from full grown"whose most interesting conclusions are recent. I have written a detailed account of those parts of the recent theory which I regard as established. Acknowledgements I started writing this book in 1967 at the invitation of Clifford Truesdell. It was to be a short work on the energy theory of stability and if I had stuck to that I would have finished the writing many years ago. The theory of stability has developed so rapidly since 1967 that the book I might then have written would now have a much too limited scope. I am grateful to Truesdell, not so much for the invitation to spend endless hours of writing and erasing, but for the generous way he has supported my efforts and encouraged me to higher standards of good work. I have tried to follow Truesdell's advice to write this work in a clear and uncomplicated style. This is not easy advice for a former sociologist to follow; if I have failed it is not due to a lack of urging by him or trying by me. My research during the years 1969-1970 was supported in part by a grant from the Guggenheim foundation to study in London.
Book Synopsis Fluid Dynamics of Viscoelastic Liquids by : Daniel D. Joseph
Download or read book Fluid Dynamics of Viscoelastic Liquids written by Daniel D. Joseph and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 772 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about two special topics in rheological fluid mechanics: the elasticity of liquids and asymptotic theories of constitutive models. The major emphasis of the book is on the mathematical and physical consequences of the elasticity of liquids; seventeen of twenty chapters are devoted to this. Constitutive models which are instantaneously elastic can lead to some hyperbolicity in the dynamics of flow, waves of vorticity into rest (known as shear waves), to shock waves of vorticity or velocity, to steady flows of transonic type or to short wave instabilities which lead to ill-posed problems. Other kinds of models, with small Newtonian viscosities, give rise to perturbed instantaneous elasticity, associated with smoothing of discontinuities as in gas dynamics. There is no doubt that liquids will respond like elastic solids to impulses which are very rapid compared to the time it takes for the molecular order associated with short range forces in the liquid, to relax. After this, all liquids look viscous with signals propagating by diffusion rather than by waves. For small molecules this time of relaxation is estimated as lQ-13 to 10-10 seconds depending on the fluids. Waves associated with such liquids move with speeds of 1 QS cm/s, or even faster. For engineering applications the instantaneous elasticity of these fluids is of little interest; the practical dynamics is governed by diffusion, ·say, by the Navier-Stokes equations. On the other hand, there are other liquids which are known to have much longer times of relaxation.

Book Synopsis Selected Papers By Chia-shun Yih (In 2 Volumes) by : W M Lai
Download or read book Selected Papers By Chia-shun Yih (In 2 Volumes) written by W M Lai and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1991-05-30 with total page 1067 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume represents a lifetime's work of the author, for many years the Stephen P Timoshenko Distinguished University Professor of Fluid Mechanics of the University of Michigan. The papers selected treat the dynamics of stratified or rotating fluids, internal or surface waves, hydrodynamic stability, jets and plumes, flow in porous media, and certain aspects of hydrodynamics in magnetic or electric fields. When the papers are viewed in perspective, heterogeneity, whether in density, entropy, circulation, viscosity, or in some quantity which can be called magnetic circulation, seems to be a recurring theme in the phenomena investigated. It provides a general framework through which the understanding of the various phenomena is facilitated by the satisfying similarity underlying their seeming diversity.

Book Synopsis Advanced Transport Phenomena by : L. Gary Leal
Download or read book Advanced Transport Phenomena written by L. Gary Leal and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-06-18 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advanced Transport Phenomena is ideal as a graduate textbook. It contains a detailed discussion of modern analytic methods for the solution of fluid mechanics and heat and mass transfer problems, focusing on approximations based on scaling and asymptotic methods, beginning with the derivation of basic equations and boundary conditions and concluding with linear stability theory. Also covered are unidirectional flows, lubrication and thin-film theory, creeping flows, boundary layer theory, and convective heat and mass transport at high and low Reynolds numbers. The emphasis is on basic physics, scaling and nondimensionalization, and approximations that can be used to obtain solutions that are due either to geometric simplifications, or large or small values of dimensionless parameters. The author emphasizes setting up problems and extracting as much information as possible short of obtaining detailed solutions of differential equations. The book also focuses on the solutions of representative problems. This reflects the book's goal of teaching readers to think about the solution of transport problems.
