Book excerpt: This monograph is an interdisciplinary study of the concept of 'fragment' in literature and in critical and literary theory. It discusses the fragment's performativity and function within a historical perspective, stretching from Heraclitus, via the German Romantics and European writers of the Modernist period, to American postmodern manifestations of the fragment. This is the first history of the fragment to appear in English, and it is also the first attempt at producing a consistent taxonomy of literary and critical fragments. The fragments are categorised according to function, not author intention, and the study addresses a number of questions: What constitutes the fragment, when the fragment can only be defined a posteriori? Does the fragment begin on its own, or is it begun by others, writers and critics? Does it acquire a name of its own, or is it labelled by others? All these questions revolve around issues of agency, and they are best discussed in terms of performativity, which means seeing fragments as acts: acts of literature, acts of reading, acts of writing. The book demonstrates how a poetics of the fragment as a performative genre can be created, situating the fragment both as literature and as a phenomenon within postmodern criticism against the background of philosophy, art history, and theology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dreams have captivated human imagination throughout the time. However, in the year 1900, dreams also gained an important place in psychotherapy when Sigmund Freud proposed that dreams were the royal road to the unconscious. The following book presents an overview of the history of dreams and discusses the shift from the use of latent content to that of the manifest content during dream analysis. Additionally, various methods of dream interpretation, the functions of dreams, differing schools of thought on the utility of dreams, typical dreams, and the biological challenge to dream theory are discussed. From antiquity, the universal phenomena of dreaming has captivated human imagination, confused human logic, and controlled human endeavors. Dreams have been regarded as very important, as messages from the gods, predictive of the future, expiatory of guilt, and the voice of conscience. Shamans, seers, and saints have used dreams to discern the source of sickness or to set the course of nations. Poets, philosophers, and playwrights have sought to plumb the depths of dreams in order to lure audience or readers into the world of fantasy, to play the strings of the emotions, and to recall the unthinkable. Cognitive, information processing, and neuroscientists find in dreams brain activity that can help understand REM, memory consolidation, and the unconscious state.

Such regret can hinder emotional growth and create wounds that affect all other aspects of our lives. But loss doesn’t necessarily mean the end of a connection with a loved one. In fact, it can open the doors to a unique relationship that offers intimacy, healing, and renewal. In The Infinite Thread, author Alexandra Kennedy helps us deal with loss in a powerful new way: by using active imagination, letters, and inner dialogue to re-create and heal past relationships. In doing so, we also amend the often-strained ties with those still living. The Infinite Thread strips away the veils of mystery surrounding death and transcends preconceptions about death and dying. Rich with opportunities for reflection, it brings enormous comfort to anyone who has ever lost a loved one or been faced with their own mortality.

Book excerpt: This study of dream accounts in the Bible and in ancient Near Eastern literature suggests two main lines of interpretation: on the one hand it defines the function of dream accounts from a literary, social, political and religious point of view on the basis of literary genre (practitioners' manuals, royal inscriptions, prophetic texts, etc.). On the other hand, in adopting a rather larger typology than is usual (message dreams, symbolic dreams, but also prophetic, premonitory and judgment dreams), it seeks to clarify both the relationship between the fiction implied by the literary form and the actual dream experience of individuals, as well as the different ritual practices related to this experience (interpretation, conjuration, incubation, etc.).

Book excerpt: Rather than solid frames, some less than perfect aesthetic objects have permeable membranes which allow them to diffuse effortlessly into the everyday world. In the parallel universes of music and literature, Linda Cummins extols the poetry of such imperfection. She places Debussy's work within a tradition thriving on anti-Aristotelian principles: motley collections, crumbling ruins real or fake, monstrous hybrids, patchwork and palimpsest, hasty sketches, ellipses, truncated beginnings and endings, meandering arabesques, irrelevant digressions, auto-quotations. Sensitive to the intermittences of memory and experience and with a keen ear for ironic intrusion, Cummins draws the reader into the Western cultural past in search of the surprisingly ubiquitous aesthetic of the unfinished, negatively silhouetted against expectations of rational coherence. Theories popularized by Schlegel and embraced by the French Symbolists are only the first waypoint on an elaborately illustrated tour reaching back to Petrarch. Cummins meticulously applies the derived results to Debussy's scores and finds convincing correlations in this chiasmatic crossover.

Book excerpt: Summary: "The Dream Merchant" tells the fascinating story of Milo, a trader whose heart is as big as the world of dreams he visits. He lives in a place where dreams are valued as much as the most valuable wealth. This book is more than just a trip through a fantasy world; it delves deeply into the meaning of dreams and how they affect real life. Milo's natural curiosity and kindness led him to a dream that was unlike any other. It was a dream that had the power to change the very fabric of reality. After this realization, Milo goes on an amazing journey with people who are just as brave and smart as he is. Milo's friends are with him on this quest. Each has their own skills, hopes, and fears. They have to work together to get through a magically filled environment, where they face difficult obstacles that test their friendship and willpower. Their journey, which is a mix of bravery, friendship, and the endless possibilities of the mind, shows the decisions and sacrifices that come with having so much power. They see the problems they face not only as problems, but also as chances to learn secrets that could change the future of their world. The movie "The Dream Merchant" honors the deeper meaning of dreams by showing them as strong forces that can bring about change instead of just the product of our minds while we sleep. Milo and his friends learn that if you keep going after your goals with a clean heart, you might be able to change reality for the better. Their journey shows that dreams have two sides: they can save and destroy, build and tear down. Milo and his friends learn a useful lesson from their struggles and successes: the most powerful thing is not the dreams themselves, but the steps you take to reach your goals. The story ends with a powerful lesson about how dreams can change the world and how powerful it is when people work together for a shared goal. For dreamers and doers alike, "The Dream Merchant" is a tribute to the human spirit and a lesson that we can all use our dreams to make the world the place we want it to be. Chapter 1: Milo’s Dream Store. In the middle of Dreamville, near bright market stalls full of people laughing and talking, stood a one-of-a-kind shop. Milo's Shop of Dreams was a wonderful place full of fun and magic. As soon as you walked in, the warm, welcoming lights on the shelves full of bottles would make you feel right at home. Milo, the dream merchant, made these strange bottles with great care. His warm smile and loving eyes welcomed everyone who came into his beautiful country. They were just dreams, though. Milo had a very special skill. He can make many kinds of dreams, from dangerous trips to faraway places to the soft, comforting hug of a favorite memory. Every dream was an original piece of art, crammed into a single bottle and full of colors as bright and beautiful as a sunrise or as calm and peaceful as the sky at night. Kids would put their faces up to the glass and look into the bottles with wide eyes as they watched the images move and swirl inside. People of all ages missed the carefree and happy times of their childhood and remembered goals and ideals they had forgotten. Every customer could find a little bit of happiness to take home in the store. It wasn't just a place to buy dreams. Milo thinks that everyone should be able to dream and get away from the stresses of regular life to have fun and be creative. He put a lot of love and care into each dream, making sure that the person who had it would find everything they needed. Milo's dreams could come true, even if it was just for one night. The thrill of flying, the adventure of finding kingdoms under the sea, or just the simple pleasure of hanging out with friends could be these pictures. That being said, something amazing happened one night. Just as the stars lit up Dreamville in a beautiful way, Milo found something that would change the way he saw dreams forever. He had never seen anything like the light that was shining from one strange bottle. My dream was filled with a strange energy that moved and changed colors like the northern lights. Milo knew that this wasn't a normal dream, so he paid close attention to it. It was an exciting call and a promise of a trip he had never taken before. When Milo held the bottle in his hands, he could feel its magic. It spoke of unknown worlds and old secrets. This dream had the power to change reality, showing Milo things he could never have imagined. Milo took a deep breath and jumped ahead of faith, getting ready for an adventure that would take him out of his shop and into the dream itself. What kinds of riddles would he solve? How hard could things get for him? One thing was certain: Milo's life and the lives of those around him were about to go through huge changes that no one could have imagined. Chapter 2: The mysterious sight Because he was so eager to figure out what the dream meant, Milo had a hard time falling asleep. When he closed his eyes, the dream got clearer. There were lights swirling in beautiful patterns that made him feel like he was in another world. In the blink of an eye, Milo was taken from his comfortable room to a world full of magic and colors that almost sang. What he saw and pictured was completely different from anything else he had ever seen or thought of. In this world, rivers flowed with clear, ancient sounds, trees spoke languages that were long gone, and the sky was full of stars that sparkled like jewels. Milo was aware that the normal rules did not apply to this strange world. He could now do things he had only dreamed of before. With the thought of a thought, he could fly through the clouds and feel the wind blowing past him. He could also make flowers grow, their petals spreading out in a burst of color and smell. He saw amazing things everywhere he turned, like crystal towns that gave off an inner light, woods full of strange animals, and mountains that reached up to the sky. It was a world where things that seemed impossible happened all the time, not just reasonable theories. As Milo looked into this dream some more, he felt a rush of excitement and freedom he had never felt before. His fears and limits in Dreamville seemed to have been replaced by an open-ended desire to explore and find new things. He met beings of light and shadow who told him stories and taught him things. This showed him that there are mysteries waiting to be solved everywhere in the world. Milo's heart kept beating faster with each step, and his mind grew in ways he never thought possible.
