Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fourth Book of the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius Antoninus But Stoicism has an interest deeper than this. If the pressing need of to-day is to find a place for higher beliefs beside practical interests and the Obligation of accepting scientific truth, in Stoicism not only is an attempt made to satisfy like conditions, but in it a religious Spirit which has many links Of connection with ours is fused on the one hand with a practical spirit akin to ours, and on the other with a reasoned body of science. Each of these aspects of the system suggests some remarks. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Marcus Aurelius was born in 121 in Rome. His original name was Marcus Annius Verus, and he was born into a wealthy and political family. A dedicated student, he became a Stoic, a philosophy which emphasized self-restraint, fate, and reason. He was chosen by Emperor Hadrian to be his eventual successor, and in 161, Aurelius took control of the Roman Empire along with his brother Verus, assuming the name Caesar Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Augustus. His rule suffered the threat of war and disease, and, while Rome was held, his rule weakened after the death of his brother. His son Commodus became co-ruler in 177 (having been named Caesar in 166), and Aurelius died after a repeated bout of illness in 180.

Book excerpt: Meditations (Medieval Greek: Τὰ εἰς ἑαυτόν, romanized: Ta eis heauton, literally "things to one's self") is a series of personal writings by Marcus Aurelius, Roman Emperor from 161 to 180 AD, recording his private notes to himself and ideas on Stoic philosophy. Marcus Aurelius wrote the 12 books of the Meditations in Koine Greek as a source for his own guidance and self-improvement. It is possible that large portions of the work were written at Sirmium, where he spent much time planning military campaigns from 170 to 180. Some of it was written while he was positioned at Aquincum on campaign in Pannonia, because internal notes tell us that the first book was written when he was campaigning against the Quadi on the river Granova (modern-day Hron) and the second book was written at Carnuntum. It is unlikely that Marcus Aurelius ever intended the writings to be published and the work has no official title, so "Meditations" is one of several titles commonly assigned to the collection. These writings take the form of quotations varying in length from one sentence to long paragraphs.

Book excerpt: “To me, this is the greatest book ever written. . . . It is the definitive text on self-discipline, personal ethics, humility, self-actualization, and strength. . . . If you’re going to read it, you absolutely have to go with the Gregory Hays translation.”—Ryan Holiday, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Obstacle Is the Way “It is unbelievable to see how the emperor’s words have stood the test of time. . . . Read a page or two anytime you feel like the world is too much.”—Arnold Schwarzenegger, The Wall Street Journal Nearly two thousand years after it was written, Meditations remains profoundly relevant for anyone seeking to lead a meaningful life. Your ability to control your thoughts—treat it with respect. It’s all that protects your mind from false perceptions—false to your nature, and that of all rational beings. A series of spiritual exercises filled with wisdom, practical guidance, and profound understanding of human behavior, Marcus Aurelius’ Meditations remains one of the greatest works of spiritual and ethical reflection ever written. With bite-size insights and advice on everything from living in the world to coping with adversity and interacting with others, Meditations has become required reading not only for statesmen and philosophers alike, but also for generations of readers who responded to the straightforward intimacy of his style. In Gregory Hays’s translation—the first in nearly four decades—Marcus’s thoughts speak with a new immediacy. In fresh and unencumbered English, Hays vividly conveys the spareness and compression of the original Greek text. Never before have Marcus’s insights been so directly and powerfully presented. With an Introduction that outlines Marcus’s life and career, the essentials of Stoic doctrine, the style and construction of the Meditations, and the work’s ongoing influence, this edition makes it possible to fully rediscover the thoughts of one of the most enlightened and intelligent leaders of any era.
