He was a classical composer and was a founder of the American Guild of Organists. The American musician also was one of the "Boston Six," which was comprised of respected artists Edward MacDowell, Horatio Parker, Amy Beach, John Knowles Paine, and George Whitefield Chadwick. Published in 1908, Theory of Music was written out of a need to have a musical resource that elaborates on the science of making music without confusing users with highly technical terms and discussions. Even the Harvard-educated Foote himself found music theory books of his time "virtually unintelligible" to him. It was during his serious pursuit in learning more of the science and art of making music that he discovered there was no theory reference that "was in English such as a non-musical person could understand." After more than 2 years of research and preparation, this volume was born. Did Foote's labor of love produce the kind of theory book that he himself was looking for? The answer is YES. Through this edition, the respected composer was able to explain the basics of certain concepts in music using sentence structures and words that are easy to understand. Music students will be delighted with this kind of reference. It should be noted that Foote's version was written more than a hundred years ago and may lack some of the other aspects in music theory present in modern volumes on the same subject.
