Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Foundations of Faith Any volumes have been written M upon the subject of these lectures, and it would be a very pleasant task and by no means a difficult one to gather to gether and sum up Opinions old and new upon their main thesis, the relation between faith and authority. The present volume, however, does not offer this to its readers. It brings with it a few old problems under whatever new light may come from the experience of a long ministry. For thirty years the writer has been watching the play of religious truth upon the minds of men, and his reading of theological results has been revised in the light of innumer able experiences. In this way he trusts that he may be able to present formal questions at least from some new angles of vision and in some new groupings. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Foundations of Faith: A Lecture The geologists demonstrated that the author of Genesis was mistaken as to the' age of the world, and that the story of the universe having been created in six days, about six thousand years ago could not be true. The theologians then took the ground that the days spoken of in Genesis were periods of time, epochs. Six long Whiles, and that the work of creation might have been commenced millions of years ago. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Foundations of Faith, Vol. 37 Thus the history of the problem in modern times shows a great variety of views concerning the nature and'analy sis of belief. It also reveals the fact that some of the major problems of belief are not carefully differentiated. For example, the ground of belief, or that upon which the belief is established, or built up, is not clearly distinguished from the actual state or process of belief. Another aspect of the same problem is what we may call the logic as Opposed to the psychology of belief. The validity of a belief is one consideration as it is judged by certain standards of truth, but the psychologist is not concerned with this. His interest is iii-analysing thestate or process into its elements. The more recent social psychologists have pointed out the importance of social influence in the making and establishing of belief, and this is a timely emphasis, as it seems to have been over looked by many writers. Moreover, the wide range of the meanings of belief has never been adequately set forth. Belief, Credulity, Confidence and Faith are terms frequently found in literature, and yet a differentiation of the use of these terms in the wide range of the subject is lacking. It seems necessary, there fore, to set to work on a classification of belief, both as to Grounds and Processes, in order to show the wide range of the subject, to attempt to clear up some of the difficulties in the use of terms, and to make distinctions which seemed to be lacking in many treatises on the subject. My thanks are due particularly to Professor G. S. Brett. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foundations of Faith: Being a Consideration of the Grounds of Religious Belief, and Especially of the Evidences of Divine Revelation in the Religion of the Bible One who ascends a mountain sees the landscape below changing on his view from every new point of observation. The general features of forest and field, river and plain, are much the same, but the outlines of the picture are changed. The horizon falls further away; new mountains show their misty tops, and new realms come faintly into View. Meantime objects near at hand appear to change in, relative importance; some that were conspicuous sink out of sight, and others, which they for a time concealed, stand out in bold pro file. Increasing knowledge furnishes to each succeeding generation a new view point from which to contem plate religion, natural or revealed. In this change of view we still recognize the old staple supports of faith - arguments which will forever stand firm from age to age; but new truths also come into view, and the old arguments give new suggestions. They change in their relative value when viewed through a changed perspective. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Grounds of Christian Belief IN this little volume I have sought to set forth the foundations and meaning of the Christian Faith in a way that will com mend itself to men and women of the present day. A little book on simple lines will serve a useful purpose if it meets some of the difficulties of those who, though keenly interested in the things that count, might turn away sorrowing from a ponderous work. I have stated my aim in the hope that the readers for whom it is designed may not confuse my efforts with those of others whose writings they might fear would prove too exacting. It is generally recognized that a gulf exists between the knowledge of the real masters of contemporary Thought and that of readers of ordinary or even of unusual education, who, about the matters which in the last issue are alone worthy of sustained consideration, ask: Are these things so P If this little book can in any way help to bridge that gulf, it will meet an acknowledged need. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Foundation and the Superstructure, or the Faith of Christ and the Works of Man Tions, that is to say, both of the Bible and Nature; the latter including, of course, the nature implanted by god within us, and in His own likeness. For, except as revealed, man has no knowledge whatever of the Supreme Being, and of His relations to His creatures; and by the test alone of His revelations to men must all tenets in regard to heavenly truth stand or fall.1 If then the views which I am upholding can be shown to contravene at all the revelations of god Himself, no one, I trust, will be more ready than I to be so taught. But if only they shall be found to oppose the views of men, that is the very reason why I have been at such pains to give them to the world. For I, and I pray all my readers also, would humbly hearken to the inspired apostle St. Peter when he thus commands: As newborn babes (or without prejudice) desire the reasonable, unadulterated milk (of the word), that ye may grow thereby unto salvation. 2 Or when he consistently tells us, that the sure word of prophecy is the proper lamp for our darkness all through the long night even until the dawn of day; and first, because every prophecy is of public and. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Principles of Faith Since the substance of the following treatise was written, some remarkably able works, handling many of the topics here discussed, have appeared, notably A Study of Orzgz'fls, by Dr. Pressense T/ze P/zz'losop/zy of Tkez'sm, by Dr. Ward T/ze Basis of T/zez'sm, by Dr. Harris P/zysiml cma' Mbrallaw, by Rev. W. Arthur, m.a. And T/ze Unify of Nature, by the Duke of Argyll. This fact led me to consider whether these productions met the want I had aimed at supplying, and thus rendered the publication of my manuscript superfluous. The result was a con viction that, notwithstanding the rare excellence of these works, there was still need for such a book as I had attempted to provide. I therefore issue this production in the hope that it may, in some degree, take part in promoting the cause of truth and human well-being. Unbelief continues to project its shot and shell into the lines of Christian Theism and, though its former attacks have been well met, it must not be left to repeat them unresisted. The present volume only aspires to be one of many contributions, made in vindication of those great principles which underlie the experience and practice of true religion. LXXIX, at the Lecture Founded by John Bampton M.A. Canon of Salisbury In the later Lectures the argument requires reference to sources not readily accessible to general readers, such as the writings of some of the chief Fathers of the Church and the earlier Latin works of Luther. The author has consequently endeavoured to consult the convenience of such readers by quoting, in the Notes, passages Of suffi cient length to justify and illustrate his statements; and with the same view he has printed English translations side by side with the original text. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Aid of Faith Possess minds capable of holding two inconsistent views, one an intellectual and theoretical Opinion, the other a practical and sympathetic sentiment, and they are not disturbed by the inconsistency. If that incon sistency is called to their attention, they invent or discover some sort of reconciliation; but unless it is called to their attention it gives them no concern. This book is not written for this class of persons. I have no desire to disturb a religious faith which is undisturbed. It may rest on false foundations: it may be alloyed with error. If so, there are enough forces at work in the community to shake it from its false foundations and to burn out its alloy - with the possible chance of burning up the gold also. This work of the destruction of falsehood - or false forms of truth, which are themselves the most dangerous kind of falsehood - I leave to others. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foundations of Religion in the Mind and Heart of Man Theological controversy, in the ordinary sense of the word, has in these pages been as much as possible avoided. A layman is neither qualified, nor disposed to thread the interminable maze. But, on the other hand, he is more at liberty than a clergyman of any Church or Sect can be, or ought to be, to say all, and exactly what he thinks. Some readers may complain, that positive conclusions have not been pushed further. But the object has been to labour on common ground, especially for the benefit of the young and uninstructed (for whom alone the author presumes to write), by showing in a popular manner, on how broad, solid, and immovable a foundation religious Faith, Hope, and Worship repose to cheer and fortify sincere and anxious hearts, whatever form of the Christian religion they may have embraced. It is plain, that this end must have been entirely frustrated, had the narrow tenets or interests of any particular Church, sect, or party, been directly or indirectly advocated or attacked. Like its predecessor, the volume on Prayer, it has a distinct office to fulfil, an office that in the judgment of the editor is of immense importance. For between the professor's lecture-room and the preacher's study there is a great gulf fixed. In the lecture-room the lectures on systematic theology are laboriously entered into notebooks, which are useful for the exit examinations. But when the active work of the ministry begins, and so many sermons have to be prepared every week, the cupboard into which those notebooks have been stowed away is left undisturbed. The preacher begins to Spin his sermons out of his own brains, with the assistance of such popular books as happen to be at his hand.
