Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Grounds of Christian Belief IN this little volume I have sought to set forth the foundations and meaning of the Christian Faith in a way that will com mend itself to men and women of the present day. A little book on simple lines will serve a useful purpose if it meets some of the difficulties of those who, though keenly interested in the things that count, might turn away sorrowing from a ponderous work. I have stated my aim in the hope that the readers for whom it is designed may not confuse my efforts with those of others whose writings they might fear would prove too exacting. It is generally recognized that a gulf exists between the knowledge of the real masters of contemporary Thought and that of readers of ordinary or even of unusual education, who, about the matters which in the last issue are alone worthy of sustained consideration, ask: Are these things so P If this little book can in any way help to bridge that gulf, it will meet an acknowledged need. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Grounds of Theistic and Christian Belief I must expect, that, among the readers who may be interested in the general subject of this volume, some will be less attracted by the sections that are concerned with the philosophical objections to theism, or with the critical evi dence in behalf of the genuineness of the Gospels. But even this class, I trust, will find the major part of the book not altogether ill-suited to their wants. I venture to ih dulge the hope, that they may derive from it some aid in clearing up perplexities, and some new light upon the nature of the Christian faith and its relation to the Scriptures. Book excerpt: Within The Christian System by Alexander Campbell the author has put forth his views and understanding of the Christian church and the teachings therein. Asking questions such as "What God does" and addressing in detail the topic and practice of Baptism, Campbell establishes clear lines of reasoning along with exhibiting an in depth grasp of his chosen religion and its dogma. The Christian System demonstrates Campbell's clear respect for the religious scriptures of the Christian faith. Though well written and with the points made and substantiation soundly presented, many of his observations on these, the doctrines and structure of the church of his time are not fully correspondent to modern religious views. Regardless of this minor issue, this e-book is an essential and enlightening read for those following any form of the Christian faith and a particularly eye opening volume for those without a prior basis of learning regarding Christianity, containing extensive knowledge on the religion and all that is related. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Basis of Faith, 1877: A Critical Survey of the Grounds of Christian Theism The Congregational Union Lecture has been established with a view to the promotion of Biblical Science, and Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature. It is intended that each Lecture shall consist of a course of Prelections, delivered at the Memorial Hall, but when the convenience of the Lecturer shall so require, the oral delivery will be dispensed with. The Committee hope that the Lecture will be maintained in an unbroken Annual Series; but they promise to continue it only so long as it seems to be efficiently serving the end for which it has been established, or as they may have the necessary funds at their disposal. For the opinions advanced in any of the Lectures, the Lecturer alone will be responsible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Byways of Belief If the search for truth be the supreme object of the Christian Religion, there is, of course, no inaccuracy in Mr Lloyd Thomas's analogy with the doctrine of evolution and the British Association. But Catholics would altogether deny that the Church was built as a Society for spiritual research. It was surely built to promulgate truth and to band men together as comrades in arms. Similes are dangerous things, but the metaphor of an army is much more fitting to the idea of the Church than the metaphor of a hunting party in doubt as to the quarry it hunts. It is not a common search but a common find that unites us. This is not to be taken as meaning that the Catholics of any particular age are to pride themselves on the possession of the whole truth, but the very object of their being banded together is that they may teach and live that truth which they do possess, and that, by living it, truth may be added to them in greater measure. The search for truth has been denied by Church ofificialdom, and its advocates have exalted it out of due proportion into the first essential of a Christian Church. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The True Religion: Being the Grounds of the Catholic Faith The object of the following pages is to give in a brief space an outline of the grounds of the Catholic religion. The argument pre supposes three things: (i) Belief in the existence of God, the Creator of the universe and Of man (2) the spirituality of the human soul and (3) the validity of the pro cesses of human reason. The first two can be proved (see Bibliography at the end), although considerations of space forbid their treatment here; the third is not capable of proof, for any proof must assume and involve the conclusion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foundations: A Statement of Christian Belief in Terms of Modern Thought The modern world is asking questions. Christianity and its traditional theology have come down to us from an age very different from our own, an age when the sun and the stars moved round the earth, when the meaning of natural law and evolution was only dimly apprehended, when the psychology of religion, the historical method and the critical study of ancient documents were yet unborn. These things touch the foundations of the old beliefs, and it is about the foundations that the world is asking. This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Religion in Its Doctrinal Expression Several reasons have led the writer to prepare the present work on theology. He has been a teacher of the subject during the past eighteen years. His own method and standpoint in dealing with truth have, as a natural consequence, taken definite form. Theology is like any other science in the fact that if it is alive, it grows. This does not mean that it goes beyond Christ and the New Testament. It means, rather, that these are provocative of endless growth. The object of religion does not grow, but the subject never attains a final and static stage in the present life. Truth does not change, but we apprehend truth with increasing clearness. Down to the middle of the nineteenth century, after Luther's age, theology was engaged chiefly with the issues growing out of the Reformation. The method of theology was that derived from a past age. Theologies were comprehensive, more or less philosophical and abstract treatises. There was a very commendable desire to systematize the truths of Christianity. But too often the biblical method and aim were sacrificed in the interest of a "school" of theology or a philosophical principle. For example, Arminianism overlooked certain essential truths about God in its strong championship of human freedom. As against it, Calvinism ran to extremes in some of its conclusions in its very earnest desire to safeguard the truth of God's sovereignty. We are learning to discard both names and to adhere more closely than either to the Scriptures, while retaining the truth in both systems. During the nineteenth century the whole world of human thought underwent a remarkable revolution. In physical science a new method and ideal arose. In the social and economic sphere a new sociology and political economy took shape. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Gordon, in manuscript. He urged its immediate publication, and consented to write an introduction to its pages. Before the closing chapters were completed he had passed away from his useful life. On this account his name has no connection with the book, further than this grateful acknowledgment of his encouraging words. The learned Dr. Harnack, in his History of Dogma, when speaking of the Christian's faith in God as the father of Jesus Christ, makes the following comprehensive statement: So far as this God is believed to be the omnipotent Lord of heaven and earth, the Christian religion includes a knowledge of God, of the world, and of the purpose of created things. These three spheres, then, are the proper objects of our contemplation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Practical Basis of Christian Belief: An Essay in Reconstruction Such attempts at reconstruction are as far as possible removed from merely rationalist and destructive criticism. Modern psychology has fully justified many of the instincts and feel ings which rationalism regarded as superstitious. Modern historic criticism while diminishing the supernatural and abnormal element in early Christianity, has in fact tended to bring out its pure lustre. A great part, if not the whole, of Christian doctrine turns out to be based upon fundamental facts in the nature of man and the Spiritual world. That is the conviction with which I have always written, and the conviction becomes stronger as I grow old.
