Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jonathan Edwards is known as one of the most respected thinkers in American history and presided over the Great Awakening, one of the formative colonial events. What many don't realize is Edwards lived during a time of widespread conflict, which eventually touched the people of Northampton personally. Through these collected sermons, many of which are unpublished, Edwards sought to instruct, train, and comfort his congregation during a precarious season in provincial life. These sermons demonstrate the scope of Edwards's greatness: a global thinker intimately connected to the British Empire as well as shepherd of the Northampton flock. The first part of this collection presents the sermons Edwards preached while the theater of war centered on the continent and the Caribbean. During this phase, Edwards's sermons leveraged martial language to promote the burgeoning revivals. In 1744, war was transplanted to the colonies in which the Northampton congregation personally participated. After a short hiatus of international conflict, warfare spread throughout the colonies. While he served a frontier mission, Edwards prepared his Indian congregation for yet another season of war. These sermons present Edwards as theologian, historian, philosopher, but most importantly, as pastor.

Book excerpt: Jonathan Edwards' 'Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God & Other Sermons' is a collection of powerful and emotive sermons that capture the essence of early American Puritan literature. Edwards' writing style is filled with vivid imagery, biblical references, and a sense of urgency that seeks to evoke fear and repentance in his listeners. Through his intense and often graphic language, Edwards conveys the message of God's wrath towards sinners and the precarious nature of human existence. This work exemplifies the fire-and-brimstone preaching style of the Great Awakening era, making it a significant contribution to American religious literature. Jonathan Edwards, a renowned theologian and preacher, was a key figure in the First Great Awakening in the American colonies. His deep religious convictions and belief in the sovereignty of God influenced his writing and preaching, as demonstrated in 'Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God & Other Sermons'. Edwards' strong emphasis on divine justice and human depravity reflects his Calvinist beliefs and his desire to bring about spiritual revival among his audience. I highly recommend 'Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God & Other Sermons' to readers interested in early American religious history and Puritan literature. Edwards' impactful sermons offer a window into the religious fervor and theological debates of the colonial period, making this collection a valuable resource for understanding the cultural and spiritual landscape of early America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This eBook has been formatted to the highest digital standards and adjusted for readability on all devices. "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" combines vivid imagery of Hell with observations of the world and citations of the scripture. It is Edwards' most famous written work, is a fitting representation of his preaching style, and is widely studied by Christians and historians, providing a glimpse into the theology of the Great Awakening of c. 1730–1755. The sermon emphasizes the belief that Hell is a real place. Edwards hoped that the imagery and language of his sermon would awaken audiences to the horrific reality that he believed awaited them should they continue without calling on Christ to be saved. The underlying point is that God has given humanity a chance to confess their sins. Edwards says that it is the mere will of God that keeps wicked men from the depths of Hell. This act of restraint has given humanity a chance to mend their ways and return to Christ.

This book was released on 2000-03-22 with total page 900 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this multidimensional analysis, Benjamin A. Elman uses over a thousand newly available examination records from the Yuan, Ming, and Ch'ing dynasties, 1315-1904, to explore the social, political, and cultural dimensions of the civil examination system, one of the most important institutions in Chinese history. For over five hundred years, the most important positions within the dynastic government were usually filled through these difficult examinations, and every other year some one to two million people from all levels of society attempted them. Covering the late imperial system from its inception to its demise, Elman revises our previous understanding of how the system actually worked, including its political and cultural machinery, the unforeseen consequences when it was unceremoniously scrapped by modernist reformers, and its long-term historical legacy. He argues that the Ming-Ch'ing civil examinations from 1370 to 1904 represented a substantial break with T'ang-Sung dynasty literary examinations from 650 to 1250. Late imperial examinations also made "Tao Learning," Neo-Confucian learning, the dynastic orthodoxy in official life and in literati culture. The intersections between elite social life, popular culture, and religion that are also considered reveal the full scope of the examination process throughout the late empire.
