Book excerpt: The North Carolina 47th Infantry Regiment was organized in March, 1862, at Camp Mangum, near Raleigh, North Carolina. It served in the Department of North Carolina until May, 1863. During the conflict it was brigaded under Generals Pettigrew, Kirkland, and MacRae. The regiment spent the first year in and around North Carolina and Southern Virginia. In March of 1863 it participated in the unsuccessful attempt to recapture New Bern, N.C. The 47th moved to Virginia in May 1863 and fought with the Army of Northern Virginia beginning at Gettysburg. In June of 1863 it was assigned to the Army of Northern Virginia along with Brigadier General James J. Pettigrew, under Major General Henry Heth, of A.P. Hill's 3rd Corps. On July 1st, 1863 the Brigade under commander James Pettigrew was the first to engage the Union forces of General John Buford. The 47th was held in reserve during that first engagement, but later took part in Pickett's Charge under James Pettigrew. During the battle of Gettyburg it's losses were 21 killed and 140 wounded (35% of the 567 engaged.) General James Pettigrew was killed in the retreat from Gettysburg and the brigade was later assigned to Brigadier Generals Kirkland and MacRae. The 47th fought at Cold Harbor, then was involved in the long Petersburg siege south of the James River and the Appomattox Campaign. They reported 42 casualties at Bristoe and 20 at The Wilderness. Book excerpt: "The dead and wounded of the 47th lay everywhere underfoot". With these words Charles Bean, Australia's Official War Historian, described the battlefield of Dernancourt on the morning of the 5th of April, 1918, strewn with the bodies of the Australian dead. It was the final tragic chapter in the story of the 47th Australian Infantry Battalion in the First World War. One of the shortest lived and most battle hardened of the 1st Australian Imperial Force's battalions, the 47th was formed in Egypt in 1916 and disbanded two years later having suffered one of the highest casualty rates of any Australian unit. Their story is remarkable for many reasons. Dogged by command and discipline troubles and bled white by the desperate attrition battles of 1916 and 1917, they fought on against a determined and skilful enemy in battles where the fortunes of war seemed stacked against them at every turn. Not only did they have the misfortune to be called into some of the A.I.F.'s most costly campaigns, chance often found them in the worst places within those battles. Though their story is one of almost unrelieved tragedy, it is also story of remarkable courage, endurance and heroism. It is the story of the 1st A.I.F. itself - punished, beaten, sometimes reviled for their indiscipline, they fought on - fewer, leaner and harder - until final victory was won. And at its end, in an extraordinary gesture of mateship, the remnants of the 47th Battalion reunited. Having been scattered to other units after their disbandment, the survivors gathered in Belgium for one last photo together. Only 73 remained.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organized at Indianapolis in December 1861, the 47th Indiana Volunteer Infantry’s Civil War service spanned the Mississippi Valley and the Gulf South. From Louisville to New Orleans and on to Mobile, General James R. Slack and the 47th Indiana took the war to the inland waterways and southern bayous, fighting in many of the Civil War’s most famous campaigns, including Vicksburg, Red River and Mobile. This chronicle of the 47th Indiana follows the regiment’s odyssey through the words of its officers and men. Sources include Chaplain Samuel Sawyer’s account of their exploits in the Indianapolis Daily Journal, soldiers’ accounts in Indiana newspapers, stories of war and intrigue from newspapermen of the “Bohemian Brigade,” and General Slack’s own story in letters to his wife, Ann, including his postwar command on the Rio Grande. Numerous photographs, previously unpublished battle and area maps, and a full regimental roster complete this detailed account.

His rosters are made even more useful by a chronological updating of personnel changes, along with correspondence, orders, and editor's notes. Topping off the volume are "The Memoirs of Captain Benjamin S. Williams," which gives an captivating first-hand narrative of the role of the 47th during the Civil War.
