This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Nitrogen oxides (NOx) are pollutants emitted by various combustion processes that are subject to increasingly-stringent regulations due to their impact on human health and the environment. Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) has been shown to reduce NOx emissions by decreasing the oxygen concentration and, for a given heat release, reducing peak flame temperatures. Previous simulated combustion results (at a constant burning temperature) have demonstrated that EGR dilution may generate an NO minimization range governed by an increase in the prompt NO formation and a decrease in the thermal NO rate. However, this range is not predicted by all combustion models, thereby necessitating its experimental validation. This thesis conveys the constant burning temperature effects of EGR on NOx formation and the modelling performance of three thermochemical mechanisms (Gri-Mech 3.0, San-Diego 2005, and Combustion Science and Engineering). Using NO planar laser-induced fluorescence (NO-PLIF) and particle tracking velocimetry (PTV), constant burning temperature (1850K and 2000K) measurements of nitric oxide (NO-PLIF), temperature (NO-PLIF), and flame reactivity (PTV) were performed on methane-air flames with (and without) EGR dilution using a counterflow apparatus. These results confirmed the existence of the EGR-induced NO minimization range. However, this interesting engine design constraint was obscured by the high level of variability (factor of approx. 4) and uncertainty (up to 99%) found in the simulated NO profiles. A reduced set of reactions that may serve as a basis for the optimization process of the investigated NO submodels is also presented." --

Book excerpt: Laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) measurements of NO concentration in a variety of CH4/O2/N2 flames are used to evaluate the chemical kinetics of NO formation. The analysis begins with previous measurements in flat, laminar, premixed CH4/O2/N2 flames stabilized on a water-cooled McKenna burner at pressures ranging from 1 to 14.6 atm, equivalence ratios from 0.5 to 1.6, and volumetric nitrogen/oxygen dilution ratios of 2.2, 3.1 and 3.76. These measured results are compared to predictions to determine the capabilities and limitations of the comprehensive kinetic mechanism developed by the Gas Research Institute (GRI), version 2.11. The model is shown to predict well the qualitative trends of NO formation in lean-premixed flames, while quantitatively underpredicting NO concentration by 30-50%. For rich flames, the model is unable to even qualitatively match the experimental results. These flames were found to be limited by low temperatures and an inability to separate the flame from the burner surface. In response to these limitations, a counterflow burner was designed for use in opposed premixed flame studies. A new LIF calibration technique was developed and applied to obtain quantitative measurements of NO concentration in laminar, counterflow premixed, CH4/O2/N2 flames at pressures ranging from 1 to 5.1 atm, equivalence ratios of 0.6 to 1.5, and an N2/O2 dilution ratio of 3.76. The counterflow premixed flame measurements are combined with measurements in burner-stabilized premixed flames and counterflow diffusion flames to build a comprehensive database for analysis of the GRI kinetic mechanism. Pathways, quantitative reaction path and sensitivity analyses are applied to the GRI mechanism for these flame conditions. The prompt NO mechanism is found to severely underpredict the amount of NO formed in rich premixed and nitrogen-diluted diffusion flames. This underprediction is traced to uncertainties in the CH kinetics as well as in the nitrogen oxidation chemistry. S
Book Synopsis New Concepts in Air Pollution Research by : Willums
Download or read book New Concepts in Air Pollution Research written by Willums and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent publications on the fate of our limited earth have stirred up vivid worldwide discussions, during which it became clear that our knowledge of the complex ecosystem is far from sufficient today. All planning and predictive models are only as good as the input data they are based on. Improved research methods and new ideas and impulses are therefore urgently needed, both to stimulate the specialized scientists and to supply the concerned citizen with the updated background information necessary to make responsible decisions. Generally, most of the serious publications in the field of pollution are written by well-known and well-established scientists. It is beyond doubt that their experience and profound knowledge is an essential contribution to the understanding of our environment. But one whole group of scientists has not been able to present their ideas and concerns to a broader scientific or non scientific readership: the young scientist at the beginning of his career. He belongs to a new generation of scientists who have studied during a time when environmental concern has become a vital part of the university life. Now, in the first decade of his academic career, his educational approach and his devel oping expertise in this field may synthesize ideas that will fall on what is already a fertile ground for new concepts that are urgently needed to solve the environmental crisis.

This book was released on 1974 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conditions of nitric oxide formation in the combustion of fuel in boiler fireboxes were examined and equations were obtained for the evaluational determination of the NO output in the combustion zone. It was demonstrated, that under the conditions characteristic for a firebox process, the synthesis of nitric oxide takes place during combustion in the section from the beginning of the combustion zone up to the region of maximum temperature. The concentration of nitric oxide in the combustion products depends on the level and the distribution of the maximum temperatures in the firebox and the concentration of free oxygen in the zone of these temperatures. The final NO output in the flame tongue processes is indirectly connected with the process of hydrocarbon fuel combustion.
