She’s since become Ivariel: warrior, priestess of Danu, trainer of elephants, wife and mother. Wiser, stronger, happier, Ivariel has been content to live in her new country, to rest her battered self, and to recover from the trauma of what happened to her when she was barely more than a girl. But magic has returned to the world—abruptly and with frightening force—and Ivariel takes that profound change as a sign that it’s time to keep a promise she made to the sisters she left behind. Ivariel must leave the safety she’s found and return to face the horrors she fled. As Ivariel emerges from hiding, she discovers that her vicious brother is now Emperor of Dasnaria, and her much-hated mother, the Dowager Empress Hulda, is aiding him in his reign of terror. Worse, it seems that Hulda’s resurrection of the tainted god Deyrr came about as a direct result of Jenna’s flight long ago. It’s up to Ivariel—and the girl she stopped being long ago—to defeat the people who cruelly betrayed her, and to finally liberate her sisters. Determined to cleanse her homeland of the evil that nearly destroyed her, Ivariel at last returns to face the past. But this time, she’ll do it on her own terms.

Book excerpt: The book Sledgehammer Sentence is nostalgic feeling of isolation and confinement, going crazy when you found yourself in 7-by-10 foot concrete cell that had a solid metal door with a small window made of hard plastic. In a society willing to incarcerate more than is necessary to accomplish [legitimate] goals of sentencing. A good many were put in there for donkey years for acts of nonviolent rule breaking. You witness firsthand wasted resources, dangerous overcrowding and needless over incarceration that takes a large individual and societal toll. Billions of tax payer’s dollar wasting and loss of individual freedom that results in family broken.

Book excerpt: God gave us that greatest gift, “his son,” to save humankind, give us faith, encourage us, equip us, and guide us. In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent his only begotten son into the world that we might live through him. (1 John 4:9) This is thought-provoking. It’s an invitation to replace doubt with faith. This faith is going to be our weapon. It is belief, the belief we are going to use to believe the Son of God.

Book excerpt: “Once bitten twice shy. If minor mistakes could get me in trouble, what if I make a major mistake? One may run away from temptation but may not hide from it,” Ngozi cautioned. But that was the night she succumbed to temptation. Then came the beating: dum, dum, dum, tim, tim . . . Ngozi couldn’t protect her face anymore. She cried out in pain, “Sorry, sorry, I swear I will never dance again in my life. O heaven help me! Please! Please!” MmA and Jon beat Ngozi for hours until she gave up her dream. A maid’s patience could be compared to the patience of a farmer, one who plants and patiently waits for harvest.

Every day, a lonely princess digs through the snow in search of a way to undo the terrible wish she made—one that has left her with an empty kingdom and a heart full of guilt. But one day, a mysterious girl named Ela tumbles through the kingdom’s protective mist barrier. The princess is determined to bring Ela to her father, the harsh king, as proof that her wish can be undone, even if it means keeping Ela against her will. Meanwhile, Ela, who has grown up a regular kid in what she thought was a regular Indian American family, is shocked to discover she’s stumbled upon the very snow princess whose picture graces the cover of the locked book that Ela’s mom won’t let her read. In this elegant fantasy, author Meera Trehan conjures a story of loneliness, family secrets, science, and remarkable snow as two girls from different worlds come together to set things right—and maybe even become friends.

Book excerpt: Here comes Thanksgiving and with it more hilarious chaos of the O’Mailey variety. Cait struggles to locate a missing mother whose children were instructed to seek out the PI in the event of an emergency. Cait is doubtful as to her own parenting abilities; she can’t even keep a fern healthy. She’s afraid the boys may end up withered and broken by the time the mom-napped Molly is rescued. A murder in Brunswick has left a prosecutor looking more than just a little shady and Detective Trace Falon is put on the case. The evidence is disheartening and the Evening News broadcasts seem to be more informed than the police. As if that wasn’t enough of a headache, Trace is beginning to suspect there may be a bad apple walking about with a badge. Is there a dirty cop in their midst, or is this an impersonator? It’s up to Trace to sniff out the killer before the streets of Arbrick suffer cataclysmic consequences. Cait and Trace blunder through the difficulties of shopping as responsible parents, dealing with bad guys who keep unusual pets, cooking Thanksgiving dinner, and solving their cases without: a) getting killed, b) getting maimed, and c) falling head of heels for each other.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As she builds her own life anew, an Italian writer embarks on an all-consuming search for the true story of the mysterious princess H. H. Amrit Kaur of Mandi. On a sweltering day in 2007, having just lost her brother to illness, Livia Manera Sambuy finds herself at a museum in Mumbai, enthralled by a 1924 photograph of a stunningly elegant Indian princess. What she reads in the picture’s caption will change her life forever. This alluring Punjabi royal had supposedly sold her jewels in occupied wartime Paris to save Jewish lives, only to be arrested by the Gestapo and sent to a concentration camp, where she died within a year. Could it be true? And if so, how could such a sensational story have gone unreported? Almost against her will, Manera becomes drawn into the mystery of Amrit Kaur. Delving into the history of the British Raj, its durbars and society balls and jubilees, she shows us the precipitous decline of India’s royal caste through the lives of extraordinary figures such as Amrit’s father, the larger-than-life Maharaja Jagatjit Singh of Kapurthala; the Jewish banker Albert Kahn; and the Russian explorer Nicholas Roerich—all while pursuing the elusive Amrit Kaur’s story. When she meets with the princess’s eighty-year-old daughter, Manera’s search takes on a new dimension, as she strives to reintroduce an orphan to a mother who disappeared in 1933, leaving behind two children, her raja husband, and a legacy of activism in India’s nascent women’s civil rights movement. In Search of Amrit Kaur is an engrossing detective story, a kaleidoscopic history lesson, and a moving portrait of a woman seeking personal freedom against the backdrop of a world in upheaval.
