Book Synopsis The Finno-Ugric Republics and the Russian State by : Rein Taagepera
Download or read book The Finno-Ugric Republics and the Russian State written by Rein Taagepera and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 2000. This text provides a survey of the peoples who speak Finno-Ugric languages and have titular republics or autonomous regions within the post-Soviet Russian federation. Their languages have set them apart from their Turkic and Russian neighbours and helped to preserve their distinct identity, including their animist religious practices. Previous works on this subject were written before the demise of the USSR so that information on the subject was screened by Soviet censors. In particular, this book explores the principal threats now facing these peoples - as much environmental as political. Although communism has gone, the exploitation of natural resources threatens the region's ecology, while the new rulers in the Kremlin seem set to continue their predecessors' oppressive policies towards the Finno-Ugrians. The book is written with commitment to the threatened human and political rights of these endangered peoples.

Book Synopsis Russians in the Former Soviet Republics by : Pål Kolstø
Download or read book Russians in the Former Soviet Republics written by Pål Kolstø and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The break-up of the Soviet Union in 1989 left 25 million Russians living in the 'near abroad', outside the borders of Russia proper. They have become the subjects of independent nation-states where the majority population is ethnically, linguistically, and often denominationally different. The creation of this 'new Russian diaspora' may well be the most significant minority problem created by the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Paul Kolstoe traces the growth and role of the Russian population in non-Russian areas of the Russian empire and then in the non-Russian Soviet republics. In the post-Soviet period special attention is devoted to the situation of Russians in the Baltic countries, Moldova, Belarus, Ukraine and the former Central Asian and Caucasian republics. A chapter written jointly by Paul Kolstoe and Andrei Edemsky of the Institute of Slavonic and Balkan Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences, delineates present Russian policy toward the diaspora. Finally, Kolstoe suggests strategies for averting the repetition of the Yugoslav scenario on post-Soviet soil.

Book Synopsis Women's Movements by : Margareth Lanzinger
Download or read book Women's Movements written by Margareth Lanzinger and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2006 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. The volume begins by taking stock of women's movements and their location following the fall of communism. The authors address a broad range of subjects including gender-specific implications of social politics, feminist positioning and increasingly virulent forms of nationalism. They discuss the "body" and "sexuality" against the background of their own political and academic traditions. Retrospective historical views focus on the images of women and concepts of roles from the era of socialism and "state feminism" as well as on women's movements, politically active women and networks in individual countries in Central, East and South Europe from the beginning of the 18th century. The volume concludes with essays on legal and social contexts.
