Book excerpt: Predict and profit from the chain reactions of market turmoil “If you care about the inner dynamics and investors’ reactions to the emerging new financial world that will increasingly consist of ‘path-dependent, multimodal, fat-tailed outcomes,’ Ben Emons’s new book is a must-read. In a coherent and clear framework, Ben shows how falling dominoes in a world of fast markets and uniquely new possibili¬ties creates a market landscape we might never have prepared for.” —Vineer Bhansali, Managing Director, Portfolio Manager, PIMCO “At some point after getting your financial life in order, you may well have money to invest. Where should you put it, especially when worldwide markets are in flux? Ben Emons, a senior vice president at Pimco, the investment company that runs the world’s largest bond fund, addresses that question in The Financial Domino Effect.” —The New York Times “A great book; it’s a very smart book. This is not general reading but it’s something accessible to anyone." —Tom Keene, Bloommberg Radio When a major political or financial event happens, the impact disseminates like a contagion across markets and sovereign boundaries. Like a row of toppling dominoes, the effect of the crisis accelerates along various paths. The Financial Domino Effect enables you to benefit from these moving catastrophes and helps you navigate current changes taking place in governmental and financial systems. At the heart of this progressive book is a powerful framework for analyzing and interpreting the variety of connected influences in the three main domino effects categories—social-political, economic, and financial. By examining the aftermath of such recent milestone events as the collapse of Lehman Brothers, the Occupy Wall Street movement, and the Middle East protests, it shows you how to apply domino theory to become a more knowledgeable and astute portfolio manager. Written with the everyday inves¬tor in mind, this hands-on resource takes you to the next level by delving into such consequential topics as: How easily complex domino effects can become and what it means to your portfolio Six symptoms in the aftermath of a financial or sovereign crisis Post–financial crisis responses, such as quantitative easing (QE), credit easing, and competitive quantitative easing (CQE) How the dissemination and speed of domino effects relate to monetary transmission The second part of the book goes into great depth examining the euro zone debt crisis through the framework. This crisis is particularly unique because it is a domino effect of three kinds—social, economic, and financial—and it has not fully played out. This timely guide takes you step by step through the crisis to a final analysis. In the end, you will be prepared to plan for the myriad of far-reaching consequences and balance your portfolio. Financial crises will happen with high frequency. The Financial Domino Effect helps you stay on top when it all goes down.

Fact is, Fiscal Hangover, will give you an investing blueprint that will allow you to profit from the changing global economy. Book excerpt: "Ever wonder why today's corporate leaders can't seem to plan for the long term? Why government can't control inflation? Why the stock market is more volatile than ever? Why interest rates rise and fall like the tides? Why economic forecasts never seem to be right? In The Death of Money, Joel Kurtzman, an economist and business columnist for The New York Times, brilliantly and convincingly argues that economic stability and a rapid rate of growth, once America's hallmarks, have been lost because the fundamental nature of money has changed." "Money - in the traditional sense - died two decades ago with a single stroke of Richard Nixon's presidential pen. What followed was twenty years of a new economic disorder that began with soaring oil, gold, and real estate prices and continued with an unprecedented consumption binge by government agencies and the citizenry alike. In the twenty years of chaos, we've seen the savings and loan industry collapse, the banking system become weaker, eclipsed by the economy of finance, and an entirely new global medium of exchange created that Kurtzman calls "megabyte money."" "Most economists, Kurtzman argues, still don't know what - or how - it all happened." "Megabyte money is different from anything that has preceded it - and from the money jingling in your pocket or purse. It is part of an intricate and fragile electronic system of truly global dimensions and of amazing complexity. It is a nonstop, seven-day-a-week, 24-hour network that links tens of thousands of computers in places as lofty as the Federal Reserve and the Tokyo Stock Exchange and as lowly as the automated gasoline pump that accepts credit cards." "Megabyte money has created an entirely new global economy, one which, Kurtzman warns, is still largely unregulated, where government agencies, including the Federal Reserve and the Treasury, have ceded much power to the world's bankers, speculators, corporate treasurers, financiers, and computer programmers." "In The Death of Money, Kurtzman vividly explains how this new megabyte economy enables brokers to electronically bundle up your home mortgage with dozens of others, convert them into jumbo securities like a bond, and sell those securities to investors in Germany or Japan. In the new megabyte economy, Nobel Prize-winning equations are programmed into the computers at mutual fund companies, and mathematicians, physicists, and even rocket scientists are replacing the stock pickers of the past." "In the megabyte economy, money is nothing more than the "1's" and "0's" of the computer's code. Moving instantly along electronic highways, $1.9 trillion changes hands each day in New York alone. Information - even wrong or incomplete information - instantly affects prices around the world." "The death of money has created a strange new world most people have little knowledge of. It is a world that is far more volatile and chaotic than anything that has preceded it. Though this new world economic order evolved without a plan, Kurtzman warns that efficient new mechanisms must now be put into place to bring the economy under control. If we do so, he says, the vast, productive resources of our nation can again serve our needs."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved

Book excerpt: Macroeconomic Investment Strategies for an Era of Economic Uncertainty “Over the years, François’ insightful analyses of the business cycle has led to market calls that have both benefitted investors on the upside and (more important to many) protected them from losses on the downside. François’ incredible track record in successfully interpreting the trends that can be found in leading indicators and other macroeconomic data have also led to his well deserved reputation as an expert in sector rotation - providing investors on both the long and short side of the market opportunities to profit from his ideas. In my opinion, his most important and influential macro prediction to date was his call in the middle of the last decade when he predicted that the worst housing crisis in American history would soon be upon us, and that it would have far-ranging implications for both the global economy and world financial markets.” From the foreword by Robert Doll, Vice Chairman & CIO of Global Equities, Blackrock Advisors, LLC “François Trahan is an insightful observer and student of market forces. His research has identified key drivers of stock market performance over decades in various cycles of inflation, credit growth, and economic developments. In his new book, François tries to sort out and explain for market participants the dynamics that brought us to this point and what he sees as the future path of economic and market developments. It is an essential read for anyone participating in or interested in the stock market.” Robert Soros, Chairman, Soros Fund Management “The Era of Uncertainty is terrific. It challenges conventional Wall Street wisdom, gives investors the necessary tools to successfully navigate the new world order and has policy prescriptions to get the U.S. economy on the right track.” Consuelo Mack, Anchor & Managing Editor, Consuelo Mack WealthTrack “Valuation is not everything. An important lesson from the global financial crisis is that macro matters. In The Era of Uncertainty, François Trahan and Katharine Krantz show how macroeconomic analysis can be incorporated into the investment process and provide a road map for investing in the difficult times ahead.” Edward Chancellor, Author of Devil Take the Hindmost: A History of Financial Speculation and member of GMO's Asset Allocation team “François consistently sets a high bar for strategist and thought leaders in the markets, and I can safely say he’s done it yet again with this book. Always insightful, and willing to challenge the ‘stale’ thinking of the establishment on The Street, François' thoughts and analysis are appropriate for anyone who cares not only about markets, but the future of our world.” Jeff deGraaf, Chairman, Renaissance Macro Research, LLC With macro forces governing the post-credit crisis world, and most likely to remain dominant for some time to come, the power of the business cycle is once again in the spotlight. In this type of environment, stock picking will have far less impact on portfolio returns than getting the "big picture" right. And using the last twenty years as a playbook will prove costly to investors. The Era of Uncertainty provides a new way of thinking about investing in a dynamic, macro-driven world. In it, François Trahan and Katherine Krantz discuss the importance of macroeconomic perspectives in an unstable global economy. They go on to cover three possible future scenarios: inflation, deflation, or the middle ground. With each scenario the authors discusses the likely causes and consequences as well as the best strategies for investing profitably. Draws on the experiences of prior credit-driven deleveraging cycles to develop a dynamic framework for investing in an era of economic uncertainty Contains insights on the future of the financial industry Provides fascinating anecdotes from Trahan's time at Bear Stearns prior to its collapse and sale Includes interactive digital tool for users to determine investment strategies based on personal predictions If you intend on succeeding in today's economic environment you can't follow yesterday's investment strategies. The Era of Uncertainty reveals what it will take to make it in such a different market and how you can incorporate new strategies into your everyday investment endeavors. The book comes with an interactive digital tool allowing users to make their own predictions about the economic future and receive asset allocation and sector allocation advice.

The shift from gold and silver coins to paper money caused great concern to economists such as Harry Browne, but now today even the paper money has no value. Nowadays, the world's financial system is carried on Internet websites!!! Trillions of dollars flow back and forth every day through the world's financial markets. If the World Wide Web crashes, there is nothing to back it up.Today, the governments of the world are just creating ever increasing deficits. They are spending like there is no tomorrow. They are just bailing each other out. How much longer can this continue? The "mother" of all financial collapses is upon us NOW.That is why this book is needed more than ever NOW. The world's economy is being run as a giant Ponzi scheme. Governments are bailing out banks and then bailing out each other. The country of Greece was on the verge of collapse until the Government of the United States sent over billions of dollars to Greece to bail it out.Of course, the United States Government did not send real money to Greece. It just made an electronic transfer of funds. The Government of the United States is also bailing out several states of the United States.Who will bail out the United States of America when it collapses, as it must, because of the deficit spending that keeps increasing? The Collapse MUST come. It is inevitable. Our fondest hope has to be that it does not come during our lifetimes, so that only our children and grandchildren will suffer because of it.That is the reason why we need to read and re-read "How You Can Profit from the Coming Devaluation."

She offered a trenchantly expressed response to the neoliberal slogan of the time, ‘There is no alternative.’ Kelsey’s analysis remains a critical yardstick for current policies and an alternative perspective on the development of global relationships. The recent global financial meltdown and subsequent recession give new relevance to her questions about globalisation’s consequences for sovereignty and democracy. Kelsey continues to offer a bold voice of challenge and critique, pointing the way for open-eyed engagement with the economic realities of the future.

Book excerpt: The Financial Crisis Inquiry Report, published by the U.S. Government and the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission in early 2011, is the official government report on the United States financial collapse and the review of major financial institutions that bankrupted and failed, or would have without help from the government. The commission and the report were implemented after Congress passed an act in 2009 to review and prevent fraudulent activity. The report details, among other things, the periods before, during, and after the crisis, what led up to it, and analyses of subprime mortgage lending, credit expansion and banking policies, the collapse of companies like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and the federal bailouts of Lehman and AIG. It also discusses the aftermath of the fallout and our current state. This report should be of interest to anyone concerned about the financial situation in the U.S. and around the world.THE FINANCIAL CRISIS INQUIRY COMMISSION is an independent, bi-partisan, government-appointed panel of 10 people that was created to "examine the causes, domestic and global, of the current financial and economic crisis in the United States." It was established as part of the Fraud Enforcement and Recovery Act of 2009. The commission consisted of private citizens with expertise in economics and finance, banking, housing, market regulation, and consumer protection. They examined and reported on "the collapse of major financial institutions that failed or would have failed if not for exceptional assistance from the government."News Dissector DANNY SCHECHTER is a journalist, blogger and filmmaker. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Mr. Minsky long argued markets were crisis prone. His 'moment' has arrived.” -The Wall Street Journal In his seminal work, Minsky presents his groundbreaking financial theory of investment, one that is startlingly relevant today. He explains why the American economy has experienced periods of debilitating inflation, rising unemployment, and marked slowdowns-and why the economy is now undergoing a credit crisis that he foresaw. Stabilizing an Unstable Economy covers: The natural inclination of complex, capitalist economies toward instability Booms and busts as unavoidable results of high-risk lending practices “Speculative finance” and its effect on investment and asset prices Government's role in bolstering consumption during times of high unemployment The need to increase Federal Reserve oversight of banks Henry Kaufman, president, Henry Kaufman & Company, Inc., places Minsky's prescient ideas in the context of today's financial markets and institutions in a fascinating new preface. Two of Minsky's colleagues, Dimitri B. Papadimitriou, Ph.D. and president, The Levy Economics Institute of Bard College, and L. Randall Wray, Ph.D. and a senior scholar at the Institute, also weigh in on Minsky's present relevance in today's economic scene in a new introduction. A surge of interest in and respect for Hyman Minsky's ideas pervades Wall Street, as top economic thinkers and financial writers have started using the phrase “Minsky moment” to describe America's turbulent economy. There has never been a more appropriate time to read this classic of economic theory.

This book was released on 2016-04-11 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current Global Financial Stability Report (April 2016) finds that global financial stability risks have risen since the last report in October 2015. The new report finds that the outlook has deteriorated in advanced economies because of heightened uncertainty and setbacks to growth and confidence, while declines in oil and commodity prices and slower growth have kept risks elevated in emerging markets. These developments have tightened financial conditions, reduced risk appetite, raised credit risks, and stymied balance sheet repair. A broad-based policy response is needed to secure financial stability. Advanced economies must deal with crisis legacy issues, emerging markets need to bolster their resilience to global headwinds, and the resilience of market liquidity should be enhanced. The report also examines financial spillovers from emerging market economies and finds that they have risen substantially. This implies that when assessing macro-financial conditions, policymakers may need to increasingly take into account economic developments in emerging market economies. Finally, the report assesses changes in the systemic importance of insurers, finding that across advanced economies the contribution of life insurers to systemic risk has increased in recent years. The results suggest that supervisors and regulators should take a more macroprudential approach to the sector.
