Book excerpt: We are all interested in the future, because that's where we are hoping to live. In the Bible, the special book about the future is the last onethe book of Revelation. It is often thought to be a mysterious book, but in fact it's a mosaic of over 500 Old Testament references. These references are the keys with which we may unlock the Apocalypse. Prominent in its forecasts are allusions to Jezebel and Elijah. Most have heard of the world's last conflict called Armageddon. But few realize that Armageddon cannot be understood without studying its Old Testament sourcethe histories of Ahab, Jezebel, Elijah at Mount Carmel, and the destruction of idolaters in the Kishon Valley (at Megiddo, which is the Hebrew root name for the Greek word Armageddon). Desmond Ford has two doctorates, and two of his postgraduate degrees are in eschatology. He has written 10 books on Daniel and Revelation and lectured in many countries on these themes. Here, Ford focuses in on future events typified by the Old Testament stories of Elijah versus Jezebel. Central to this study are investigation into Antichrist and his attacks on the latter day church. Revelation's messages for an imperiled world are central in this book.

Book excerpt: From one of Britain's most distinguished historians and the bestselling author of Hitler, this is the definitive history of a divided Europe, from the aftermath of the Second World War to the present. After the overwhelming horrors of the first half of the 20th century, described by Ian Kershaw in his previous book as having gone 'to Hell and back', the years from 1950 to 2017 brought peace and relative prosperity to most of Europe. Enormous economic improvements transformed the continent. The catastrophic era of the world wars receded into an ever more distant past, though its long shadow continued to shape mentalities. Europe was now a divided continent, living under the nuclear threat in a period intermittently fraught with anxiety. Europeans experienced a 'roller-coaster ride', both in the sense that they were flung through a series of events which threatened disaster, but also in that they were no longer in charge of their own destinies: for much of the period the USA and USSR effectively reduced Europeans to helpless figures whose fates were dictated to them by the Cold War. There were striking successes - the Soviet bloc melted away, dictatorships vanished and Germany was successfully reunited. But accelerating globalization brought new fragilities. The impact of interlocking crises after 2008 was the clearest warning to Europeans that there was no guarantee of peace and stability. In this remarkable book, Ian Kershaw has created a grand panorama of the world we live in and where it came from. Drawing on examples from all across the continent, Roller-Coaster will make us all rethink Europe and what it means to be European.

Book excerpt: Three quarters of our current electricity usage and transport methods are derived from fossil fuels and yet within two centuries these resources will dry up. Energy Economics covers the role of each fossil and renewable energy source in today’s world, providing the information and tools that will enable students to understand the finite nature of fossil fuels and the alternative solutions that are available. This textbook provides detailed examinations of key energy sources – both fossil fuels and renewables including oil, coal, solar, and wind power – and summarises how the current economics of energy evolved. Subsequent chapters explore issues around policy, technology and the possible future for each type of energy. In addition to this, readers are introduced to controversial topics including fracking and global warming in dedicated chapters on climate change and sustainability. Each chapter concludes with a series of tasks, providing example problems and projects in order to further explore the proposed issues. An accompanying companion website contains extensive additional material on the history of the major types of fuel as well as technical material relating to oil exploration, the development of solar power and historical environmental legislation. This textbook is an essential text for those who study energy economics, resource economics or energy policy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Warning: This memoir series contains themes of physical, sexual, domestic, and verbal abuse, including instances of rape and child abuse. Reader discretion is advised. This is book 2 in the series. Excerpt: Trazoli's enthusiasm barely registered with me as she excitedly declared, "We're going to pretend we are backup dancers for DeBarge." I groaned in response, "Really? You woke me up for that? You know I don’t know how to dance!" Ignoring my protests, she switched on her boombox, filling the air with DeBarge's "Rhythm of the Night" as we stepped out onto the front sidewalk. Trazoli was dressed in black leggings, a white button-up shirt with rolled-up sleeves, and a white tank top peeking out from underneath. Like me, she was also barefoot, with a white bandana adorning her medium-length hair and a pair of small white earrings glinting in her ears. I will never forget how we looked that day. Undeterred, Trazoli urged, "Come on, Tasha Marie, let’s practice in the street." I observed from the safety of the sidewalk as Trazoli boldly pranced across the sparsely busy street. She seemed to have lost her mind, expecting me to join her in the middle of the road for a dance session. While she reveled in the infectious beats of the song, I couldn't muster up the same enthusiasm. With energy undiminished, she danced vigorously to the song twice before finally darting over to grab my hands and drag me onto the street. I resigned myself to her infectious madness as she restarted the song on the cassette player of the boombox. Before I knew it, I found myself transformed into a pretend backup dancer for DeBarge. Trazoli chuckled, teasing, "You were right, you can’t dance a lick, but we’re having fun; come on, Tasha Marie! Hit it!"

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Roller Coaster Decade is an autobiography of 10 years of my life which begins when I was eighteen years old. I like all other high school graduates had plans for my life, but sometimes life just doesn't work out that way. I was diagnosed with bipolar illness and put into a mental facility in Switzerland, therefore having to postpone attending Hotel Management School for a year, but I finally made it. I did, however, suffer three more manias after that. After each mania I had to start my life from scratch, because manias have heavy consequences. In the year 2000 I was told that my kidneys no longer functioned and was put on a dialysis machine. After sixteen months I had the kidney transplant. I was the by far the youngest. This book is about the ups and downs in life, what it takes when so many unexpected and tragic things happen in a short period of time. Most of all it is not a book strictly about the above. My "Decade" story is told honestly with humor and that the message is to be brave enough to speak about your darkest moments, because once you do others open up to you and your own burdens disappear. Suffering in silence only hurts you. And finally it is about a gift called life that we all take for granted.
