It is argued that the resultant strong indigenous demand has caused the efflorescence in barkcloth manufacture and use, contrary to the common assumption that the tourism market is the "savior" of art. This cultural vigor, however, has social costs that are explored here and weighed against its benefits. A number of the major chiefs of Fiji had offered to cede Fiji to Queen Victoria; and after the offer had been accepted, Fiji became a British Crown Colony on that day. The Federation Movement in Fiji 1880-1902 examines European settlers' failed attempts to federate with various Australian states and with New Zealand as well as their political gains during the period which laid the foundation for European political dominance in the Fiji islands.
