Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Feudal Age The Pasadena course in "Ancient History" includes not only the conventional course to 800 A. D., but a continuation of that course to the close of the Crusades. This little book has been written to cover important phases of the period from Charlemagne to 1270. It does not include all of the material which was prepared originally on the Feudal Age, since the discussion of the rise of the nations and the study of civilization in the later Feudal Age has been postponed until the second year, being considered in the course in modern European history. There has been no attempt to cover carefully the events of these five centuries. The book is less a narrative than a description of life and of general changes, with some account of the great personages of the period. The author hopes that the book is sufficiently long to show that the Feudal Age was essentially different from any other in history; he cannot expect that it will make clear to the student that medieval spirit which animated society during the Feudal Age. The author's thanks are due to many for help and suggestions. Among these are Professor Jacob N. Bowman of the University of Washington, Professor James T. Shotwell of Columbia University, and the author's colleagues, especially Miss Leonora Schopbach and Miss Katherine J. Kenaga and Mr. W. R. Morris. None of these is responsible for errors or for the partial and misleading statements which are inevitable in so brief an account. The author will be glad to receive criticisms from teachers who use the pamphlet. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Middle Ages This translation is published in the confident belief that it will prove as valuable a book for school use and general reading among us as it has proved itself in France. Care has been taken to distinguish the editor's work from the author's, in both text and notes. Some few omissions have been made from the author's text without notice, chiefly for the purpose of simplifying the narrative, and corrections of dates and of manifest typographical errors have not been marked, but in every case where the author's meaning has been changed the fact is indicated by the use of brackets, and the editor's notes are signed, while theauthor's are left unsigned. In general, the intention has been to confine changes and notes to points of sufficient importance to justify notice, but in a book of this kind it is hardly possible that every statement in need of revision has been detected, and I am conscious to myself of unequal knowledge of the different subjects dealt with. Burr, of Cornell Univer siry, the general editor of the series, for reading all the manuscript and making many suggestions for improvements. Several of my former students have helped me; in particular, Professor A. C. Krey of the University of Minnesota, who prepared the maps, bibliographies, and index; Willy Jahr, ph.d., who read some of the earlier chapters; Professor Frederick Duncalf of the University of Texas, who has helped me in reading proof; these and others I wish to thank. Any mistakes in the book I am responsible for; the number would have been greater except for the generous assist ance which I have received. Lastly, I am much indebted to my wife and three daughters for frequent criticism and aid. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vergil in the Middle Ages When, some years ago, Professor Comparetti was introduced to me at Oxford, his Vergil in the Middle Ages was already a world-famed book. I lost no time in asking his permission to have the work translated into our language. Put the various attempts I made to secure a competent translator were abortive, and the appearance meanwhile in America of Tnnison's corresponding (and highly interesting) volume The Author of the AEneid as he seemed in the Middle Ages made any immediate publication of the earlier and far greater work unnecessary. When at last, two years ago, Mr. Benecke volunteered to undertake the translation, I at once seized the opportunity thus presented, and urged him to lose no time in setting about the task. Mr. Benecke has accomplished it sooner than might have been expected; indeed, with an almost marvellous celerity. I venture to hope that English and American readers will both be grateful for this introduction to a work which immediately secured its author a permanent place in the ranks of European philologists, and which seems hardly likely to be superseded. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Middle Ages In this text-book three subjects have been emphasized: first, the work of the Christian Church, the greatest of the civilizing agencies; second, the debt which we owe to the Byzantine and Arabic civilizations; third, the life of the times. While endeavoring to subordinate mere facts and dates, I have intended to introduce those with which a pupil should be familiar. It is impossible to name the sources to which I am indebted; as I have formed my opinions gradually, during thirteen years in which I have been engaged in studying and teaching medieval history. In preparing the maps I have profited greatly by the admirable Oxford Historical Atlas of Modern Europe. Dr. A. F. Nightingale, of Chicago, Mr. F. L. Thompson, of New York, and Dr. Caroline Colvin, one of my students, have read the whole manuscript and made many helpful suggestions. Prof. E .H. Castle and Dr. A. C. Howland, of the Teachers College, Dr. E. A. Singer, of Philadelphia, Prof. Wilfred H. Munro, of Brown University, Prof. E. P. Cheyney, and Dr. W. E. Lingelbach, of the University of Pennsylvania, have read one or more chapters. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from German Society at the Close of the Middle Ages The township in Germany was of two kinds - first of all, there was the township that was free of the Empire, that is, that held nominally from the Emperor himself (rat/z staa't), and secondly, there was the township that was under the domination of an inter mediate lord. The economic basis of the whole was still land; the status of a man or of a corporation was determined by the mode in which they held their land. N 0 land without a lord was the principle of mediaeval polity; just as money has no master is the basis of the bourgeois world with its self-made men. Every distinction of rank in the feudal system was still denoted for the most part by a special costume. It was a world of knights in armour, of ecclesiastics in vestments and stoles, of lawyers in robes, of princes in silk and velvet and cloth of gold, and of peasants in laced shoe, brown cloak, and cloth hat.
