Book excerpt: The Feast of Flesh and Spirit is Duende. A piece of night. Summoning. Evocative. Dangerous. A selection of poetry, prose, short stories and conversations with archangels and the demons of the mind. A work spanning decades. Occult and shamanic. Reflections on every kind of ecstasy and agony. Open at any page. Like an oracle it explains the depths and madness of love or reminds you how to live. Leave behind the day-to-day-world of office, mortgage, marriage, mansion or ghetto, and enter into an occult landscape where enchantment dwells. Dedicated to artist Lisa Engeman, who just made it out alive after a seemingly impossible surgical procedure to remove a brain tumor wrapped around her carotid artery, this book is a celebration and a look down the barrel of a smoking gun. The one you've all had. The one you escaped from by the skin of your teeth.

Book excerpt: From conversations with Kabbalistic archangels and entities most powerful, to beat poetry and challenges on love, to snatches of story that will leave you lingering in the disturbance of non-ending because isn't that how life is? Come journey into Subterrania.Into a world of mystery and magic;Of mirrors held up to your psyche, Of enchantment and hope. From conversations with Kabbalistic archangels and entities most powerful, to beat poetry and challenges on love, to a story that will leave you lingering in the disturbance of non-ending because isn't that how life is? There is poetry and prose covering everything from witchcraft to the sensual to courage in the face of confusion and self-doubt. This is a unique collection presenting el duende in all its mystery (“Dark matter that threatens to become art”—Lorca).“It's not pretty, flowery poetry, but rather poetry that speaks to the soul; at times with gut-wrenching truth. I cannot recommend it more than that.” Review, 2010, Goodreads.THE FEAST OF FLESH AND SPIRIT is a book of words, certainly, but also with a new expression—photographic portraiture in black and white: the Exquisite Survivor Collection: through word and image we will tantalise you with the desire for depth in a banal world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The feast of Corpus Christi, one of the most solemn feasts of the Latin Church, can be traced to the Fourth Lateran Council in 1215 and its resolution of disputes over the nature of the Eucharist. The feast was first celebrated in Liège in 1246, thanks largely to the efforts of a religious woman, Juliana of Mont Cornillon, who not only popularized the feast, but also wrote key elements of an original office. This volume presents for the first time a complete set of source materials germane to the study of the feast of Corpus Christi. In addition to the multiple versions of the original Latin liturgy, a set of poems in Old French, and their English translations, the book includes complete transcriptions of the music associated with the feast. An introductory essay lays out the historical context for understanding the initiation and reception of the feast.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to the Feast is an invitation to explore the theme of celebrating God’s unfolding covenant relationship with humanity in the context of a meal. Starting with Abraham’s hospitality in providing a feast for three divine visitors, the menu in Welcome to the Feast begins with ample servings from the Old Testament before delving into Jesus’ many controversial meals with his disciples and other sinners. After savoring the accounts of miraculous feedings, the accounts of the Last Supper as recorded in Paul and the Synoptic Gospels become the main course. Yeary follows with the “breaking of the bread,” in the book of Acts. Finally, we hear in Jesus’ bread of life discourse in John the call for all who are hungry for true food to come to the feast.

On the positive side, we have to experience our human spirit, which has been mingled with the divine Spirit (Rom. 8:16; 1 Cor. 6:17).

Book excerpt: The person to whom I had addressed the three books entitled De Peccatorum Meritis et Remissione, in which I carefully discussed also the baptism of infants, informed me, when acknowledging my communication, that he was much disturbed because I declared it to be possible that a man might be without sin, if he wanted not the will, by the help of God, although no man either had lived, was living, or would live in this life so perfect in righteousness. He asked how I could say that it was possible of which no example could be adduced. Owing to this inquiry on the part of this person, I wrote the treatise entitled De Spiritu et Littera, in which I considered at large the apostle's statement, "The letter kills, but the spirit gives life." In this work, so far as God enabled me, I earnestly disputed with those who oppose that grace of God which justifies the servances of the Jews, who abstain from sundry meats and drinks in accordance with their ancient law, I mentioned the "ceremonies of certain meats" [quarumdam escarum cerimoniæ] - a phrase which, though not used in Holy Scriptures, seemed to me very convenient, because I remembered that cerimoniæ is tantamount to carimoniæ, as if from carere, to be without, and expresses the abstinence of the worshippers from certain things. If however, there is any other derivation of the word, which is inconsistent with the true religion, I meant no refernce whatever to it; I confined my use to the sense above indicated. This work of mine begins thus: "After reading the short treatise which I lately drew up for you, my beloved son Marcellinus," etc.

Book excerpt: The letter to the Galatians is a key source for Pauline theology as it presents Paul's understanding of justification, the gospel, and many topics of keen contemporary interest. In this volume, some of the world's top Christian scholars offer cutting-edge scholarship on how Galatians relates to theology and ethics. The stellar list of contributors includes John Barclay, Beverly Gaventa, Richard Hays, Bruce McCormack, and Oliver O'Donovan. As they emphasize the contribution of Galatians to Christian theology and ethics, the contributors explore how exegesis and theology meet, critique, and inform each other.
