Her refreshing travel therapy submits that each new trip helps you to confront your fears head-on, strengthening your resolve and confidence for trips to even more outlandish destinations!

Book excerpt: 'It was because I was afraid that I had decided to attempt a crossing of the great Sahara desert, from west to east, by myself and by camel. No one had ever made such a journey before . . .' In October 1972 Geoffrey Moorhouse began his odyssey across the Sahara from the Atlantic to the Nile, a distance of 3,600 miles. His reason for undertaking such an immense feat was to examine the roots of his fear, to explore an extremity of human experience. From the outset misfortune was never far away; and as he moved further into that 'awful emptiness' the physical and mental deprivation grew more intense. In March 1973, having walked the last 300 miles, Moorhouse, ill and exhausted, reached Tamanrasset, where he decided to end his journey. The Fearful Void is the moving record of his struggle with fear and loneliness and, ultimately, his coming to terms with the spiritual as well as the physical dangers of the desert.

Book excerpt: Sidney Franklin (1903-76) was the last person you'd expect to become a bullfighter. The streetwise son of a Russian Jewish cop, Sidney had an all-American boyhood in early twentieth-century Brooklyn--while hiding the fact that he was gay. A violent confrontation with his father sent him packing to Mexico City, where first he opened a business, then he opened his mouth--bragging that Americans had the courage to become bullfighters. Training with iconic matador Rodolfo Gaona, Sidney's dare spawned a legend. Following years in small-town Mexican bullrings, he put his moxie where his mouth was, taking Spain by storm as the first American matador. Sidney's 1929 rise coincided with that of his friend Ernest Hemingway's, until a bull's horn in a most inappropriate place almost ended his career--and his life. Bart Paul illuminates the artistry and violence of the mysterious ritual of the bulls as he tells the story of this remarkable character, from Franklin's life in revolutionary Mexico to his triumphs in Spain, from the pages of Death in the Afternoon to the destructive vortex of Hemingway's affair with Martha Gellhorn during the bloody Spanish Civil War. This is the story of an unlikely hero--a gay man in the most masculine of worlds who triumphed over prejudice and adversity as he achieved what no American had ever accomplished, teaching even Hemingway lessons in grace, machismo, and respect.

Book excerpt: Captain Bunn founded SOAR to develop effective methods for dealing with flight anxiety. Therapists who have found this phobia difficult to treat will find everything they need to give their clients success. Anxious flyers who have “tried everything” to no avail can look forward to joining the nearly 10,000 graduates of the SOAR program who now have the whole world open to them as they fly anxiety free wherever they want. This approach begins by explaining how anxiety, claustrophobia, and panic are caused when noises, motions—or even the thought of flying—trigger excessive stress hormones. Then, to stop this problem, Captain Bunn takes the reader step-by-step through exercises that permanently and automatically control these feelings. He also explains how flying works, why it is safe, and teaches flyers how to strategically plan their flight, choose the right airlines, meet the captain, and so on. Through this program, Captain Bunn has helped thousands overcome their fear of flying. Now his book arms readers with the information they need to control their anxiety and fly comfortably.

The house with its extremes, cold during the winter months and steamy hot in the summer, moved them forward. The five-room house with its lacks, no electricity, no inner walls gave them hope for better times. There is one chapter in the book for each family member's deeds as seen through the eyes of the author. Documents and pictures are included to validate the contents of the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The heroes, villains, and monsters portrayed in such popular science fiction television series as Heroes, Lost, Battlestar Galactica, Caprica, Doctor Who, and Torchwood, as well as Joss Whedon's many series, illustrate a shift from traditional, clearly defined characterizations toward much murkier definitions. Traditional heroes give way to "gray" heroes who must become more like the villains or monsters they face if they are going to successfully save society. This book examines the ambiguous heroes and villains, focusing on these characters' different perspectives on morality and their roles within society. Appendices include production details for each series, descriptions and summaries of pivotal episodes, and a list of selected texts for classroom use. Book excerpt: Marcus Gheeraerts’s portrait of a ’Persian lady’ - probably in fact an English lady in masquing costume - exemplifies the hybridity of early modern English culture. Her surrounding landscape and the embroidery on her gown are typically English; but her head-dress and slippers are decidedly exotic, the inscriptions beside her are Latin, and her creator was an ’incomer’ artist. She is emblematic of the early modern culture of exchange, both between England and its neighbours, and between Europe and the wider world. This volume presents fresh research into such early modern exchanges, exploring how new identities, subjectivities and artefacts were forged in dialogues and encounters between diverse cultures, nations and language communities. The early modern period was a time of creative interactions between cultures and disciplines, and accordingly this is a multidisciplinary volume, drawing together international experts in literature, history, modern and ancient languages and art history. It understands cultural exchange as encompassing both the geographical mobilities of travel and trade and the transmission of ideas across borders and between languages, as enabled by the new technology of print. Sites of exchange were located not only in distant and unfamiliar lands, but also in the bookseller’s shop and the scholar’s study. The volume also explores the productive and complex dialogues between early modern culture and the classical past. The types of exchanges discussed include the linguistic transactions of translation and imitation; interactions between cultural elites, such as monarchs, courtiers and diplomats; and the catalytic influences of particularly mobile or outward-looking individuals and groups. Ranging from the neo-Latin poetry of an English author to the plays of a nun in seventeenth-century New Spain, from royal portraits exchanged in diplomatic negotiations to travelling companions in the Ottoman Empire, the volume sheds new light

Book excerpt: David Wells, 55, a lonely recent Lotto winner and widower on his way to Colorado, picks up hitchhiker Cheri North, 35, on a San Fernando Valley freeway on ramp. She's going to Denver to see an old friend, Jan. David is struck by her total resemblance to Marla (not his wife). Cheri always wanted to be a scenic photographer and asks to see some scenery along the way. He offers to show her Zion Canyon, Bryce Canyon, and many other scenic places along the way at his expense. She enthusiastically accepts. At Zion, he presents her with a new camera, instructs her on its use, and helps her take pictures. They stop for the night at Bryce Canyon Lodge, where she tries to seduce him. He puts her off, admitting that he feels he's falling in love with her, but he wishes to develop a relationship before getting to sex. While enthralling Cheri with the beauty of Bryce Canyon, David continues to recall his times with Marla. He and Cheri become more intimate. Later that night, shivering from cold, she crawls into bed with him. Leaving Bryce, David takes Cheri on a trip through the wild lands of Utah, picking up pieces of petrified wood and having a picnic in remote Calf Creek Campground. Eerily, she picks out the same vantage points to take her pictures as did Marla years before. On a rock in a stream, David is unable to control himself and kisses Cheri with feeling. In Torrey, Utah, Cheri insists on sleeping in the same bed with David. She asks what the kiss in the stream means, David admits she reminds him of two other women, and he is uncertain if the love he feels is for Cheri or the other women. Her confusion and frustration increase. They go Country and Western dancing in Grand Junction. Another man dances with her while David rests. When the man tries to take her away from the dance hall, David intercedes. A knife fight follows with the man and two of his friends. Cheri becomes more insistant to know about the other women. In Estes Park she tells David of her love relationship with Jan. David takes her to her friend in Denver. Returning to Estes Park, David tries to sort out his feelings for Cheri. Later, returning to LA they stop for the night in Glenwood Springs. They are attacked by a vicious motorcycle gang of rapists and murderers. How do they defend themselves? Who are the two women in David's life? Can Cheri and David put their relationship together?
