Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thoughtful Christians are legitimately perplexed by a number of issues relating to the church's belief and practice. They are perplexed partly because they recognize that the issues themselves are thorny, and partly because they are not sure how to test the mutually inconsistent theories and explanations affirmed by diverse voices speaking with equal assurance. Most Christians find relatively little occasion or encouragement to address their perplexities with intellectual candor and integrity. If they dare to acknowledge their theological perplexities at all, they are too often told that these perplexities are unimportant, or that they can be answered very simply, or that they should be left to the experts. Guide for the Christian Perplexed, written by members of the faculty of Wycliffe College, Toronto, aims to explore a diversity of issues and questions to do with o our knowledge of Jesus o the meaning of suffering o the function of doctrine o the understanding of Scripture o the place of other religions o the challenge of atheism o the pleasures and complications of sexuality o the nature of worship o the way to evangelize o understanding who our neighbor is locally and globally o diversities of spirituality Here you will find thoughtful reflections and answers to the questions around these issues. A study guide is included for individual and group use.

Book excerpt: An evangelist came into my life and led me to the door of salvation in about ten minutes-I knew I had a decision to make. After saying the sinner's prayer I could not believe what had just happened. WOW, are you kidding me, the Holy Spirit was inside of me and I was in the presence of God for the first time in my thirty six years of life. I knew I had to shout it as loud as I could to everyone who didn't know about being born again. And shout it I did to both family and friends. A job change forced me to drive one hundred and fifty miles round trip every day to work and during that time the Lord gave me a hitch hiking ministry that lasted over six years. It was such a blessing to enter into a stranger's heart and bring the salvation plan to them. Even if they rejected it, I was in the center of God's will. It is my hope that my adventures in evangelizing and encouraging conversations with the Lord will inspire you to pick up your sickle and go into Gods harvest field and start witnessing to people with the intension of bringing them into the Kingdom of the Lord.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining the layers of meaning encoded in software and the rhetoric surrounding it, this book offers a much-needed perspective on the intersections between software, morality, and politics. In software development culture, evangelism typically denotes a rhetorical practice that aims to convert software developers, as well as non-technical lay users, from one platform to another (e.g., from the operating system Microsoft Windows to Linux). This book argues that software evangelism, like its religious counterpart, must also be understood as constructing moral and political values that extend well beyond the boundaries of the development culture. Unlike previous studies that locate such values in the effects of code in-use or in certain types of code like free and open source (FOSS) software, Maher argues that all code is meaningful beyond its technical, executable functions. To facilitate this analysis, this study builds a theory of evangelism and illustrates this theory at work in the proprietary software industry and FOSS communities. As an example of political liberalism at work at the level of code, these evangelical rhetorics of software construct competing conceptions of what is good that fall within a shared belief in what is just. Maher illustrates how these beliefs in goodness and justice do not always execute in replicable ways, as the different ways of decoding software evangelisms in the contexts of Brazil and China reveal. Demonstrating how software evangelisms exert a transformative force on the world, one comparable in significance to code itself, this book highlights the importance of rhetoric in even the most seemingly a-rhetorical of technical endeavors and foregrounds the crucial need for rhetorical literacy in the digital age.

Book excerpt: In hard times, you can either panic, decline, or grow. Which do you choose to do? This is not a time to tweak your church budget. It is not a time to slash and burn it indiscriminately across the board. Nor is it the time to hunker down in the bunker and wait things out. Now is the time is exercise wisdom and to act strategically. In fact, it's a great time to be the church. People need us to live out our mission as radically as we can possibly imagine. This book will help you make wise decisions about how to weather the economic storm and emerge on the other side of it a much stronger congregation. It’s a simple book with a simple message: you don’t get to choose when you go through hard times, only how you respond to them.

Book excerpt: This imaginative approach to Jesus studies chronicles the journey of Norm, a fictional college graduate who travels to the Middle East to see if he can study Jesus and follow him at the same time, and if curiosity will make him a better disciple or no disciple at all. Norm sets out on an adventure to investigate the New Testament and the life of Jesus for himself, hitchhiking simultaneously across the Gospels and the land. His travels offer students and lay readers a creative and engaging way to explore many of the major questions in Jesus studies today. Will Norm be able to reconcile his Christian faith with critical scholarship? As readers follow his faith journey, they learn the importance of asking probing questions. The book's lavish, journal-style interior design--featuring maps, photos, doodles, sketches, and email exchanges between Norm and his professor--makes it fun to read.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Healthy Christian living doesn’t happen without genuine community, growing humility, and Gospel clarity. The Narrow Trail provides a “Three Tips” paradigm for experiencing God’s grace through three important practices. Like those who are amateur hikers and climbers are guided by those three hiking tips, Christians are counseled by God’s Word to do the same: Don’t go alone Know your limitations Never leave the path The Narrow Trail aims to help people discover or rediscover a vibrant faith that is fully confident in God’s love. The confidence in God’s love it aims for is not pie-in-the-sky, wishful thinking, but a certainty based on the historic teaching about what Jesus has done for His children. In the end, by applying the principles contained therein, readers will find renewal in their faith and revival in their practice. Along the way, The Narrow Trail not only points out the benefits of genuine community, growing humility, and Gospel clarity, but takes time to explain why so many have abandoned these practices and the church.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Let C.S. Lewis inspire and equip you to share your faith. Evangelism is an extraordinary task; it’s what God uses to bring people from death to life. But it has always been difficult. C.S. Lewis was used by God in the conversions of countless people, from friends and acquaintances in his own lifetime to modern-day readers of books such as The Chronicles of Narnia and Mere Christianity (the most influential Christian book of the 20th century). As Tim Keller comments, "C.S. Lewis was incredibly skilled at getting Christianity across in a way that’s powerful to thoughtful people." So, if we want help with evangelism, there is much we can learn from the clarity and imagination of this hugely influential Christian writer. You may feel inadequate to the task; after all, there is only one C.S. Lewis. But evangelist Randy Newman skillfully helps us to apply the methods Lewis used (storytelling, humor, imagery and more) in our own conversations. You will be equipped to talk about your faith and engage with unbelievers wisely, whatever their attitude towards the Christian faith.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pastor Bill Hybels’s firm conviction is that the highest value in personal evangelism is being attuned to and cooperative with the promptings of the Holy Spirit. This means playing only the role you are intended to play—walking when the Spirit says to walk, talking when the Spirit says to talk, and falling silent when the Spirit suggests that you’ve already said enough. More than two thousand years ago, Jesus himself introduced the perfect model for evangelism. He left the marvelous adoration of the angels and the perfection of heaven, and he chose to “walk” clear across the cosmos. He had no memorized script, no forced formulas. Instead, he was armed only with an offer of redemption to people just like you and me, many of whom were neck-deep in pain of their own making. Today, the goal for every Christian is to reflect Christ’s love and follow his example by taking simple walks across rooms—leaving our circles of comfort and extending hands of care, compassion, and inclusiveness to people living far from God. Designed for use with the video.

It will arm you to not only defend but share your life and faith with those God brings into your world. Get the book today and see how it will encourage you to distribute this life-saving message of the Cross to your world. From the Author Having shared the gospel of Jesus Christ throughout much of my life since being "Born Again" at the age of 11, I herein want to encourage many other Christians to be Jesus' witnesses, as in Acts 1:8 of the Bible. My desire is for the many silent believers to share their faith in daily life. The Bible speaks highly of the "Soulwinner," as in Daniel 12:3 and Proverbs 11:30. Much of this is best done by personal contact. --Art Zimmer
