Book excerpt: The proceedings of June 1993 international symposium held in Atlanta, Georgia, called specifically to develop and standardized evaluation procedures for non-destructive methods of testing pavements. The 29 papers discuss analytical models and techniques, measurement and calculation techniques in the field and laboratory, problems and errors associated with backcalculation methods and design parameters, and testing for other pavement uses. Also includes a history of the quest for a standard and the status of that effort. Reproduced from typescripts. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book excerpt: Non-destructive testing of pavement structures can be achieved by accurately measuring and interpreting deflection data. this paper describes a computer program designed for simple and fast processing of deflection data collected using a falling weight deflectometer (fwd). a set of diagnostic parameters are calculated: first, maximum horizontal strain in the asphalt concrete (ac) under the test load, directly via the corresponding maximum curvature; next, the elastic stiffness (or young's modulus) of the subgrade; and finally, the vertical stress, strain and deflection on top of the subgrade, by means of an improved method of equivalent layer thickness. the actual stresses, strains, and deflections at test conditions can be normalized for standard ac temperature and standard test load. diagnostic and design applications are discussed. comparisons are made with parallel elastic layer analysis computations. for the covering abstract of the conference see irrd 807201.

Book excerpt: An evaluation of NDT equipment and acquisition of a Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) for the Illinois Department of Transportation was accomplished. This was followed by an extensive testing program using the FWD to evaluate concrete pavements in Illinois. Test results were evaluated and procedures developed for testing and evaluation of jointed and continuously reinforced concrete pavements. Results show that some causes of incipient distresses can be detected using the FWD device including subgrade strength, loss of load transfer and development of voids. Recommendations for rehabilitations are presented in the final report.

Download or read book Field Evaluation of the Multi-depth Deflectometers written by and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Multi-Depth Deflectometer (MDD) is an LVDT deflection measuring device which is retrofitted into pavement layers. A maximum of six MDD modules may be installed in a single 1.5 inch diameter hole. The modules are clamped against the sides of the hole at the required depths and the center core is attached to an anchor located approximately 7 feet below the pavement surface. The MDD can measure either the relative elastic deflection or the total permanent deformation of each layer in the pavement system. By placing multiple modules in a single hole, the vertical strains induced in pavement layers can be measured. This report describes the installation of Multi-Depth Deflectometers at the Texas A & M Research Annex. The pavement response under both Falling Weight Deflectometer and truck loading is described, together with an analysis procedure to backcalculate layer moduli from depth deflection readings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deflection-based nondestructive evaluation methods for highway and airfield pavements rely wholly on mechanistic models of pavement behavior under load to characterize certain fundamental properties of individual pavement features (pavement section of similar thickness, construction history, and traffic). Once these key pavement parameters are quantified, areas of immediate concern can be identified for maintenance or rehabilitation, and an evaluation of the future performance of the entire feature can be made. The procedure sounds simple enough, until one tries to accomplish the task for an entire airfield which might contain well in excess of 200 distinct features. This paper details how the deflection basin created at the center of a rigid pavement slab under loads produced by the falling weight deflectometer (FWD) can be used in conjunction with the ILLI-SLAB finite-element model to backcalculate the two key parameters needed to characterize a classical Westergaard rigid pavement, a dynamic Young's Modulis (E) of the concrete surface, and a composite dynamic modulus of subgrade reaction (k) for the supporting layers of the system. The deflection basin is described in terms of two independent variables, the maximum deflection under the center of the FWD loading plate (D0) and the cross sectional "area" of the basin. The independent nature of these two variables is critical to the uniqueness of the backcalculated parameters. Using the ILLI-SLAB model, ranges of dynamic E and k that bound the actual field values are input to the computer, along with the actual FWD load, to produce a graphical solution. An iterative computer solution is then outlined that makes the task of backcalculating dynamic E and k for several hundred features more manageable. A correlation is presented that relates dynamic k values to traditional static k values determined from plate-bearing tests. Finally, comparisons between measured deflections in the field and predicted deflections using backcalculated parameters on the computer are made at center slab to verify the accuracy and repeatability of the technique for a wide variety of temperatures and thicknesses. It is only after the validity of the technique is established that confidence can be placed in the calculated stresses due to actual loads and, therefore, the evaluation itself.

This book was released on 1986 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dynaflect and the Falling Weight Deflectometer are commonly used for nondestructive testing of pavements. Although in both cases a dynamic load is imparted, the determination of the mechanical properties of the pavement is normally performed by using static analyses. In this study, the displacements obtained from dynamic analyses are compared to those provided by conventional static programs when the subbase is a homogeneous soil stratum of finite depth, resting on a much stiffer rock-like material and when the soil properties increase smoothly with depth, as is often the case.
