Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over 35 years, radio astronomical techniques have made an impressive series of advances in our understanding of solar phenomena. However, although the subject has been partially discussed in "Paris Symposium on Radio Astronomy" in 1958, NASA-GSFC Symposium on "Physics of Solar Flares" in 1963, and the lAU Symposium No. 57 on "Coronal Disturbances" in 1973, there has not been a major international meeting dedicated to "Radio Physics of the Sun". This is the first major symposium on the subject held under the auspices of the International Astronomical Union. It was jointly spon sored by lAU Commission 40, Radio Astronomy, and by lAU Commission 10, Solar Activity. It was also sponsored by the Solar Physics Division of the American Astronomical Society. Thig volume contains the proceedings of this meeting, lAU Symposium No. 86 on "Radio Physics of the Sun" that was held in College Park, Maryland, August 7-10, 1979. The Scientific Organizing Committee of the Symposium consisted of M. R. Kundu (chairman), G. A. Dulk, O. Hachenberg, M. Kuperus, D. J. McLean, D. Melrose, M. Pick, J. L. Steinberg, T. Takakura, A. Tlamicha and V. V. Zheleznyakov. The topics and speakers were chosen in order to emphasize the current observational material with particular reference to centi meter wavelength observations of a few arc-second resolution, fast two-dimensional pictures of the sun at meter-decameter wavelengths and the recent advances in plasma and radiation theory.

The articles focus on the spacecraft and its instruments: the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA), the Extreme Ultraviolet Variability Experiment (EVE), and the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI). Articles within also describe calibration results and data processing pipelines that are critical to understanding the data and products, concluding with a description of the successful Education and Public Outreach activities. This book is geared towards anyone interested in using the unprecedented data from SDO, whether for fundamental heliophysics research, space weather modeling and forecasting, or educational purposes. Book excerpt: Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts aims to present a comprehensive documen tation of the literature concerning all aspects of astronomy, astrophysics, and their border fields. It is devoted to the recording, summarizing, and indexing of the relevant publications throughout the world. Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts is prepared by a special department of the Astronomisches Rechen-Institut under the auspices of the International Astronomical Union. Volume 33 records literature published in 1983 and received before August 1, 1983. Some older documents which we received late and which are not surveyed in earlier volumes are included too. We acknowledge with thanks contributions of our colleagues all over the world. We also express our gratitude to all organizations, observatories, and publishers which provide us with complimentary copies of their publications. Starting with Volume 33, all the recording, correction, and data processing work was done by means of computers. The recording was done by our technical staff members Ms. Helga Ballmann, Ms. Mona El-Choura, Ms. Monika Kohl, and Ms. Sylvia Matyssek. Mr. Martin Schlotelburg and Mr. Ulrich Uberall supported our task by careful proofreading. It is a pleasure to thank them all for their encouragement. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sun as a Guide to Stellar Physics illustrates the significance of the Sun in understanding stars through an examination of the discoveries and insights gained from solar physics research. Ranging from theories to modeling and from numerical simulations to instrumentation and data processing, the book provides an overview of what we currently understand and how the Sun can be a model for gaining further knowledge about stellar physics. Providing both updates on recent developments in solar physics and applications to stellar physics, this book strengthens the solar–stellar connection and summarizes what we know about the Sun for the stellar, space, and geophysics communities. Applies observations, theoretical understanding, modeling capabilities and physical processes first revealed by the sun to the study of stellar physics Illustrates how studies of Proxima Solaris have led to progress in space science, stellar physics and related fields Uses characteristics of solar phenomena as a guide for understanding the physics of stars

Book excerpt: With an emphasis on numerical modelling, Physics of the Sun: A First Course presents a quantitative examination of the physical structure of the Sun and the conditions of its extended atmosphere. It gives step-by-step instructions for calculating the numerical values of various physical quantities in different regions of the Sun. Fully updated throughout, with the latest results in solar physics, this second edition covers a wide range of topics on the Sun and stellar astrophysics, including the structure of the Sun, solar radiation, the solar atmosphere, and Sun-space interactions. It explores how the physical conditions in the visible surface of the Sun are determined by the opacity of the material in the atmosphere. It also presents the empirical properties of convection in the Sun, discusses the physical conditions which must be satisfied for nuclear reactions to occur in the core, and describes how radiation transports energy from the core outwards. This text enables a practical appreciation of the physical models of solar processes. Numerical modelling problems and step-by-step instructions are featured throughout, to empower students to calculate, using their own codes, the interior structure of different parts of the Sun and the frequencies of p-modes and g-modes. They encourage a firm grasp of the numerical values of actual physical parameters as a function of radial location in the Sun. It is an ideal introduction to solar physics for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in physics and astronomy, in addition to research professionals looking to incorporate modelling into their practises. Extensive bibliographies at the end of each chapter enable the reader to explore the latest research articles in the field. Features: Fully updated with the latest results from the spacecraft Hinode, Stereo, Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS), and Parker Solar Probe Presents step-by-step explanations for calculating numerical models of the photosphere, convection zone, and radiative interior with exercises and simulation problems to test learning Describes the structure of polytropic spheres and the acoustic power in the Sun and the process of thermal conduction in different physical conditions
