Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authority on building empirical models and the fitting of such surfaces to data—completely updated and revised Revising and updating a volume that represents the essential source on building empirical models, George Box and Norman Draper—renowned authorities in this field—continue to set the standard with the Second Edition of Response Surfaces, Mixtures, and Ridge Analyses, providing timely new techniques, new exercises, and expanded material. A comprehensive introduction to building empirical models, this book presents the general philosophy and computational details of a number of important topics, including factorial designs at two levels; fitting first and second-order models; adequacy of estimation and the use of transformation; and occurrence and elucidation of ridge systems. Substantially rewritten, the Second Edition reflects the emergence of ridge analysis of second-order response surfaces as a very practical tool that can be easily applied in a variety of circumstances. This unique, fully developed coverage of ridge analysis—a technique for exploring quadratic response surfaces including surfaces in the space of mixture ingredients and/or subject to linear restrictions—includes MINITAB® routines for performing the calculations for any number of dimensions. Many additional figures are included in the new edition, and new exercises (many based on data from published papers) offer insight into the methods used. The exercises and their solutions provide a variety of supplementary examples of response surface use, forming an extremely important component of the text. Response Surfaces, Mixtures, and Ridge Analyses, Second Edition presents material in a logical and understandable arrangement and includes six new chapters covering an up-to-date presentation of standard ridge analysis (without restrictions); design and analysis of mixtures experiments; ridge analysis methods when there are linear restrictions in the experimental space including the mixtures experiments case, with or without further linear restrictions; and canonical reduction of second-order response surfaces in the foregoing general case. Additional features in the new edition include: New exercises with worked answers added throughout An extensive revision of Chapter 5: Blocking and Fractionating 2k Designs Additional discussion on the projection of two-level designs into lower dimensional spaces This is an ideal reference for researchers as well as a primary text for Response Surface Methodology graduate-level courses and a supplementary text for Design of Experiments courses at the upper-undergraduate and beginning-graduate levels.

Book excerpt: The primary objetive of response surface methodology in to aid the statistician and other uers of statistics in applying response surface procedures to appropriate problems in many technical fields. Although methods are emphasized in the boock, a certain amount of theory is presented so that a reader with sufficient baclground in mathematics, especially in the algeba of matrices, can obtain an expourse to the theoretical development. While response surface techniques are widely used, it seems that a need existes for an exposition which contains a considerable amount of the basic material under a single cover. At the time it is felt hist book may create a continued awareness of the basic techniques amog the potential users.

Book excerpt: It is estimated that 70 to 85 percent of a naval ship's life-cycle cost is determined during the concept exploration phase which places an importance in the methodology used by the designer to select the concept design. But trade-off studies are guided primarily by past experience, rules-of-thumb, and designer preference. This approach is ad hoc, not efficient and may not lead to an optimum concept design. Even worse, once the designer has a 'good' concept design, he has no process or methodology to determine whether a better concept design is possible or not. A methodology is required to search the design space for an optimal solution based on the specified preferences from the customer. But the difficulty is the design space, which is non-linear, discontinuous, and bounded by a variety of constraints, goals, and thresholds. Then the design process itself is difficult to optimize because of the coupling among decomposed engineering disciplines and sub-system interactions. These attributes prevent application of mature optimization techniques including Lagrange multipliers, steepest ascent methods, linear programming, non-linear programming, and dynamic programming. To further improve submarine concept exploration, this thesis examines a statistical technique called Response Surface Methods (RSM). The purpose of RSM is to lead to an understanding of the relationship between the input (factors) and Output (response) variables, often to further the optimization of the underlying process. The RSM approach allows the designers to find a local optimal and examine how the design factors affect the response in the region around the generated optimal point.

Book excerpt: Split-plot designs often arise in agriculture and industrial experimentation when some factors are harder to vary than others, leading to randomization restrictions. This has an effect on both the run order and analysis of the experiment. Response surface methodology (RSM) split-plot designs for experiments with quantitative factors have received a lot of coverage in the literature. These designs are not appropriate, however, if categorical factors are also present. Draper and John (1988) and Wu and Ding (1998) explore techniques for adding categorical factors to non-split-plot RSM designs. Building on their initial idea of adding the categorical factor sequentially after taking an initial base design in the quantitative factors, this thesis explores how to add a two-level categorical factor in the split-plot RSM setting. Due to the randomization restrictions, adding a categorical factor in the split-plot setting requires considerably more care, in order to meet basic feasibility requirements and to maintain the structure. We explore four techniques for adding categorical factors and present results on requirements for the feasibility of proposed assignments of the categorical factor. We find that not all methods are appropriate for every base design. Throughout the thesis, we expand upon an example of an RSM split-plot experiment in quantitative factors for a ceramic pipe experiment from Vining and Kowalski (2008), by introducing a hypothetical additional categorical factor at either the whole-plot (hard-to-vary) or split-plot (easy-to-vary) level. We discuss optimal strategies for assigning a factor, conduct some initial exploration of the different response surfaces after perturbations to the data using contour plots, and suggest further avenues for analysis. The thesis culminates in tables of D-optimal designs for the various assignment methods based on an algorithm and computer code written for the various assignment methods.

Book excerpt: The authors intent is to provide a review of important developments in response surface methodology, with the definition being confined to that of a collection of tools in design or data analysis that enhance the exploration of a region of design variables in one or more responses. They emphasize developments in the statistics literature that have appeared since 1966 but make reference to some pre-1966 work where historical perspective is necessary. In terms of subject matter applications, the authors do not confine themselves to applications in the chemical and processing fields. They feel that one of the more important items to report is the breadth of application of RSM that has evolved in the last 20 years. Applications have expanded to areas such as operations research, nuclear energy, defense systems research, cancer chemotherapy, and many others. This document reviews the spectrum from theoretical developments to practical notions of current software availability in both the design and analysis aspects of RSM. Design and analysis will be treated separately though the user must treat the two together in his total analysis. The original intent by Box and company was to highlight a strategy-- both experimental and analytic. Yet precious little research employs a simultaneous consideration of both of these aspects. Finally, suggestions regarding the important areas for future research and future impact of RSM are offered. Keywords: experimental design; design variables.

Book excerpt: Cheng and Wu (2001) introduced a method for response surface exploration using only one design by using a 3-level design to first screen a large number of factors and then project onto the significant factors to perform response surface exploration. Previous work generally involved selecting designs based on projection properties first and aliasing structure second. However, having good projection properties is of little concern if the correct factors cannot be identified. We apply Jones and Nachtsheim's (2009) method for finding optimal designs with minimal aliasing to find 18, 27, and 30-run designs to use for single-step screening and optimization. Our designs have better factor screening capabilities than the designs of Cheng and Wu (2001) and Xu et al. (2004), while maintaining similar D-efficiencies and allowing all projections to fit a full second order model.

This book was released on 2002 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept design phase of any type of ship determines the hull form, baseline capabilities, and a large portion of the total program cost. The complexity of the ship design process leads to numerous assumptions and a great deal of uncertainty in the point designs during the concept exploration phase. While it is not feasible to eliminate this uncertainty, it is useful to explore how it affects the overall design. An analysis of the uncertainty associated with each point design provides the designer with additional information for comparing designs. It is important to consider all options and choose the baseline design that best meets the customer's requirements. Current trade-off studies tend to examine a few point designs that may or may not cover the entire design space. This approach relies heavily on designer experience, is inefficient, and may not lead to an optimum baseline design. Response Surface Methods (RSM) provide statistical tools for determining the relationships between factors (inputs) and responses (outputs). When combined with Design of Experiments (DOE), this approach allows the designer to thoroughly investigate the design space using relatively few point designs. The benefit of this analysis is the ability to efficiently examine the effects of changing factors on the overall design. Finally, the combination of RSM and an uncertainty analysis gives the designer a tremendous understanding of the design space. The thesis develops a method allowing the designer to make important decisions, such as hull form or basic mission capabilities of the ship, explicitly showing the uncertainty associated with key design parameters.
