Book excerpt: Developing countries have traditionally been highly dependent on their natural resources for conversion into capital for consumption and development purposes. There is, however, a limit to which some natural resources, notably biotic renewable resources, can be exploited as over-exploitation can lead to collapse and in the case of wildlife, extinction. This study focuses on the problems of exploiting an open-access renewable resource: the sea fisheries of Peninsular Malaysia. It traces the history of fisheries development in that country, and shows how open access to a rich resource can rapidly lead to overfishing and serious stock depletion. The various efforts of managing the fisheries are also discussed.

This book was released on 2003-12-08 with total page 1076 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Asia, the fisheries sector is important in terms of food security, livelihoods and foreign exchange earnings. However, as in many parts of the world, there are signs that capture fisheries are fully exploited or overfished. Management of fisheries in the region is often hampered by lack of information on the status of fisheries in terms of biological, social, economic, policy and governance aspects. This regional project documents an alarming decline on coastal fishery resources, based on historic research surveys in South and Southeast Asia. Socio-economic analyses and policy reviews highlight the importance of the fisheries sector but also the challenges facing it. Potential interventions to improve fisheries management in the countries are outlined and defined with environmental, socioeconomic and institutional objectives.

Book excerpt: This document provides a review, commentary and tabulations of the main trends that have occurred in exploitation of fisheries resources since the 1970s, largely as they are reflected in the FAO database on fishery landings, supplemented with selected information from the fishery literature. Reviews were prepared separately for the 15 main areas into which FAO divides the world's oceans for statistical purposes. They are then compared from a global perspective to reveal relative trends by species and areas, which are highlighted. Several special topics are reviewed, including tuna and tuna-like species, whales and dolphins, and environmental issues in fisheries.

Book Synopsis Fisheries Exploitation in the Indian Ocean by : Dennis Rumley
Download or read book Fisheries Exploitation in the Indian Ocean written by Dennis Rumley and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 2009 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book aims to further the debate on the impacts of fisheries policies in the Indian Ocean Region in order to facilitate a new regional policy direction. A key argument of the volume is that ecologically sustainable and socially just development and management of Indian Ocean fisheries require a paradigm shift in the perceptions and policies of major stakeholders. A central policy challenge is to identify a collective regional interest for fisheries and accordingly the development of integrated management policies that link ecology and society and which incorporate individuals, communities, agencies, states and regimes into a holistic cooperative endeavour. Successful ocean governance therefore requires greater inter-state and inter-agency consultation and cooperation, an improvement in linking national initiatives to local action, increased participation of local government and local communities and the enhancement of local capability. In order to achieve this overall goal requires either the enhancement of existing regional institutions or the creation of a new regional body.
