Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Excavations at Babylon The excavations were commenced on March 26, 1899, on the east side of the Kasr to the north of the Ishtar Gate. At my first stay in Babylon, June 3 - 4, 1887, and again on my second visit, December 29 - 31, 1897, I saw a number of fragments of enamelled brick reliefs, of which I took several with me to Berlin. The peculiar beauty of these fragments and their importance for the history of art was duly recognised by His Excellency R. Schone, who was then director-general of the Royal Museums, and this strengthened our decision to excavate the capital of the world empire of Babylonia. By the end of 1899 the Procession Street of Marduk was opened up as far as the north-east corner of the Principal Citadel and a cross-cut was driven through the north front of the Principal Citadel. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Legends of Babylon and Egypt, in Relation to Hebrew Tradition Excavation has provided an extraordinarily full archaeological commentary to the legends of Egypt and Babylon; and when I received the invitation to deliver the Schweich Lectures for 1916, I was reminded of the terms of the Bequest and was asked to emphasize the archaeological side of the subject. Such material illustration was also calculated to bring out, in a more vivid manner than was possible with purely literary evidence, the contrasts and parallels presented by Hebrew tradition. Thanks to a special grant for photographs from the British Academy, I was enabled to illustrate by means of lantern slides many of the problems discussed in the lectures; and it was originally intended that the photographs then shown should appear as plates in this volume. But in view of the continued and increasing shortage of paper, it was afterwards felt to be only right that all illustra tions should be omitted. This very necessary decision has in volved a recasting of certain sections of the lectures as delivered, which in its turn has rendered possible a fuller treatment of the new literary evidence. To the consequent shifting of interest is also due a transposition of names in the title. On their literary side, and in virtue of the intimacy of their relation to Hebrew tradition, the legends of Babylon must be given precedence over those of Egypt. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoir on the Ruins of Babylon I have frequently had occasion to remark the in adequacy of general descriptions to convey an ac curate idea of persons or places. I found this par ticularly exemplified in the present instance. From the accounts of modern travellers, I had expected to have found on the site of Babylon more, and less. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bismya, or the Lost City of Adab: A Story of Adventure, of Exploration, and of Excavation Among the Ruins of the Oldest of the Buried Cities of Babylonia HE following story of exploration and of excavation is intended to describe in a popular way the remarkable discoveries made by the author in the Babylonian ruin mound of Bismya. With the excep tion of Tello, where the French have excavated for many years, no other Babylonian ruin has yielded so many and such beautiful objects of ancient art. A perfect marble statue and the fragments of other statues; hundreds of fragments of stone vases engraved, inlaid, and inscribed; gold, copper, and ivory objects; several thousand tablets of clay; the graves, the weap ons of war, the temple, the palaces, the private homes, the household utensils, even the games and the toys of the children, unite in forming a distinct picture of the life and civilisation of the people of Babylonia of five thousand or more years ago. A lost city was found; names of forgotten kings and rulers were re stored to history; questions, long puzzling to the archa ologist, have been answered, and others have been presented for him to solve. The story of the recovery of this oldest of civilisations should appeal not to the scholar alone, but to the reader who is interested in days and things long passed, and specially for him has it been written. By day, beyond the bars which uselessly scowled against the small glass panes, the drab walls Of the house next door kept away everything but a dirty and dubious light. By night, the flare of the coal-gas jet distorted his father, Reb Monash, and his own feet on the fender, and the sofa into things of blurred, awkward lines. Book excerpt: "In these lectures [the Schweich Lectures of 1916] an attempt has been made, not so much to restate familiar facts, as to accommodate them to new and supplementary evidence which has been published in America since the outbreak of the war. . . . Hebrew achievements in the sphere of religion and ethics are only thrown into stronger relief when studied against their contemporary background. "The bulk of our new material is furnished by some early texts, written towards the close of the third millennium B.C. They incorporate traditions which extend in unbroken outline from their own period into the remote ages of the past, and claim to trace the history of man back to his creation. They represent the early national traditions of the Sumerian people, who preceded the Semites as the ruling race in Babylonia; and incidentally they necessitate a revision of current views with regard to the cradle of Babylonian civilization." -from the Preface

Book excerpt: This volume presents Babylon as it has been passed down through Western culture: through the Bible, classical texts, in Medieval travel accounts, and through depictions of the Tower motif in art. It then details the discovery of the material culture remains of Babylon from the middle of the 19th century and through the great excavation of 1899-1917, and focuses on the encounter between the Babylon of tradition and the Babylon unearthed by the archaeologists. This book is unique in its multi-disciplinary approach, combining expertise in biblical studies and Assyriology with perspectives on history, art history, intellectual history, reception studies and contemporary issues.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of the Ancient East: Being Some Chapters of the Romance of Modern Excavation The sites chosen for study have not been taken at random, as might appear on a casual glance. Each one finds its place here because of some special contribution which it made in bygone days to human knowledge and culture, or else because of some special advance of our knowledge of the past which has resulted from its excavation. Thus, to take instances, Babylon has its place, not only because of its ancient greatness, but because of the inestimable value to the human race of its venerable system of Law, revealed by the discovery of the Code of Hammurabi; Abydos, not only because it was the chief seat of that form of faith which expressed the Egyptian's invincible yearning for immortality, but also because its excavation has given back to us the centuries which went before the dawn of History in Egypt and Gezer, because its very Obscurity has enabled it to pre serve for us, almost unbroken, the evidence of the strange sequence of races which strove for dominion in the most interesting land on earth.
