Book excerpt: This study investigates whether micromorphological features of the oberhautchen of snake scales show adaptations to the animals' life habit. For the first time, the ventral scale microstructure of 41 snakes belonging to three different families (Pythonidae, Boidae, and Elapidae) is described. Species adapted to four different life habits (terrestrial, fossorial, arboreal, aquatic) were examined using scanning electron microscopy. Snakes (Serpentes) occur almost world-wide and occupy a variety of terrestrial, fossorial, arboreal, and aquatic habitats. Macromorphological adaptations to different life habits, such as body shape and size, are well known from the literature. Previous studies on snake scale microstructure were focused on dorsal scale microstructure. However, in spite of macroscopic similarity of the ventral scale surface among snakes, the ventral surface is extremely important from the functional point of view. Due to the loss of extremities, the epidermis of the ventral scale of a snake is in continuous contact with the substrate. Therefore, there is a special interest in revealing whether certain characteristics of ventral microstructure are determined by the biology of the species or if they reflect phylogenetic relationships. Careful analysis according to the author's newly revised terminology of microstructural features reveals that at least two major patterns of microstructure have evolved within snakes. The first comprises the ancestral microstructural pattern found in most of the snake families examined. The second pattern is derived and has evolved at least twice, independently. These two distinct types are assumed to represent different structural solutions for the same functional demands, such as propulsion generation due to frictional anisotropy, and minimization of wear. Modifications of certain features of these two major patterns appear to correlate with different strategies of habitat occupation. This study is of great interest to biologists studying animal integument, functional morphology, ecomorphology, and evolution of reptiles. In addition, the described diversity of microstructures might inspire surface scientists to mimic similar features in polymer surfaces, in order to generate innovative biologically- inspired surface-active materials with novel properties.

Book excerpt: The extent to which structure defines behavior was tested by examining form and function in the upper jaws of three different types of snakes. Specifically, swallowing (prey transport) was examined in snakes lacking a connection between palatine and pterygoid (two species of Atractaspis) and in elapid snakes with connected palatines and pterygoids but with complex (erector) or simple (dragger) palatines. It was tested if functional interactions among the characters within the functional units producing transport and envenomation result in constraints on the evolution of those functional units. Quantitative analysis of bone movements from video records of feeding behavior and manipulations of anaesthetized animals was combined with reassessment of palatal and related morphology by dissection of preserved specimens. Species within each group of elapids are united by shared characters that differ between groups but produce similar palatine behaviors during transport. In erectors, the palatine attaches to the hypochoanal cartilage, the retractor pterygoideus does not span the mobile palato-pterygoid joint, and palatine erection does not depend on the maxilla but occurs independently. In draggers, the palatine is free from the snout and the retractor pterygoideus spans the palato-pterygoid joint, which is ligamentously connected to the maxilla. Both groups of elapids share with most colubroids a core functional unit of plesiomorphic characters integrated to produce the pterygoid walk involving palatine erection. Structural variations comprise subordinate character sets operating within the thresholds of system function. In Atractaspis, structural modification of the palatomaxillary apparatus is associated with a novel unilateral envenomating behavior. The gap between palatine and pterygoid allows maxillary rotation while the palatine remains attached to a stiff snout adapted for a fossorial lifestyle. The long fang precludes pterygoid protraction during transport, resulting in loss of teeth and the pterygoid walk. The different structural arrangements of the upper jaw of elapids have little effect on the basic behavioral properties of the transport functional unit. In Atractaspis, because of participation of structures in both the prey transport and envenomation functional units, strong selection for envenomation resulted in a breakdown of the pterygoid walk prey transport functional unit.

Specifically, the traditional dichotomy between Iguania and Scleroglossa has been correlated with major evolutionary shifts within Squamata. We present a molecular phylogenetic study of squamates using DNA sequence data from the nuclear genes RAG-1 and c-mos and the mitochondrial ND2 region, sampling all major clades and most major subclades. Monophyly of Iguania, Anguimorpha, and almost all currently recognized squamate families is strongly supported. However, monophyly is rejected for Scleroglossa, Varanoidea, and several other higher taxa, and Iguania is highly nested within Squamata. Limblessness evolved independently in snakes, dibamids, and amphisbaenians, suggesting widespread morphological convergence or parallelism in limbless, burrowing forms. Amphisbaenians are the sister group of lacertids, and snakes are grouped with iguanians and anguimorphs. Dibamids diverged early in squamate evolutionary history. Xantusiidae is the sister taxon of Cordylidae. Studies of functional tongue morphology and feeding mode have found significant differences between Scleroglossa and Iguania, and our finding of a nonmonophyletic Scleroglossa and a highly nested Iguania suggest that similar states evolved separately in Sphenodon and Iguania, and that jaw prehension is the ancestral feeding mode in squamates.
