Book excerpt: This is the genealogy of architecture in the 20th century by Kenneth Frampton – the doyen of architecture history. His approach is impressively clear: he traces four lines that are recognizable as the powers that propel renewal in architecture. He structures his observations by focusing on the relevant periods in the following order: 1st, the Avant-Garde (1887–1986); 2nd, organic architecture (1910–1998); 3rd modern and national styles (1935–1998), and 4th, industrialization and prefabrication (1927–1990). His overview is not a lexical collection of chronological sequences. Instead, his insights stem from his confident eye for the history, theory and motives behind architecture. He also follows the steps of the great architects of the 20th century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After several pages of prologue summing up 18th century highlights--especially the rise in importance of geometry--some forty pages cover 1784-1916, focusing on the heavily fenestrated high-rises of the Chicago School and the iron and glass pavilions of Europe. The chapter spanning 1892-1925 concentrates on the many disputes over the trajectory of modernism: Nieuwe Kunst, Stile Liberty, Jugendstil, and Art Nouveau, all arguing the direction that the boom of prisons, hospitals, schools, town halls, and other institutional buildings would take. Three more time divisions follow and a concise compendium of architect biographies ends the volume. Along with an array of great pictures (par for Taschen), Gossel and Leuthauser--both active in the private sector--add a strong prose style attentive to debates among architects and the socioeconomic stage on which architects act. This book was released on 1970 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume offers eloquent testimony that many of the master builders of this century have held passionate convictions regarding the philosophic and social basis of their art. Nearly every important development in the modern architectural movement began with the proclamation of these convictions in the form of a program or manifesto. The most influential of these are collected here in chronological order from 1903 to 1963. Taken together, they constitute a subjective history of modern architecture; compared with one another, their great diversity of style reveals in many cases the basic differences of attitude and temperament that produced a corresponding divergence in architectural style. In point of view, the book covers the aesthetic spectrum from right to left; from programs that rigidly generate designs down to the smallest detail to revolutionary manifestoes that call for anarchy in building form and town plan. The documents, placed in context by the editor, are also international in their range: among them are the seminal and prophetic statements of Henry van de Velde, Adolf Loos, and Bruno Taut from the early years of the century; Frank Lloyd Wright's 1910 annunciation of Organic Architecture; Gropius's original program for the Bauhaus, founded in Weimar in 1919; "Towards a New Architecture, Guiding Principles" by Le Corbusier; the formulation by Naum Gabo and Antoine Pevsner of the basic principles of Constructivism; and articles by R. Buckminster Fuller on universal architecture and the architect as world planner. Other pronouncements, some in flamboyant style, including those of Erich Mendelsohn, Hannes Meyer, Theo van Doesburg, OskarSchlemmer, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, El Lissitzky, and Louis I. Kahn. There are also a number of collective or group statements, issued in the name of movements such as CIAM, De Stijl, ABC, the Situationists, and GEAM. Since the dramatic effectiveness of the manifesto form is usually heightened by brevity and conciseness, it has been possible to reproduce most of the documents in their entirety; only a few have been excerpted.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twentieth century has witnessed dramatic and fundamental changes in almost every branch of architecture. It has been a period of experiment in the use of new materials and constructional methods which has led to an extraordinarily wide range of buildings-from highly personal and emotional structures, to the cool geometry of pure forms. This is the first book to attempt in strictly chronological terms to survey all the major buildings of this century. It is arranged in decades from 1900 to 1970: within each decade, all significant completed buildings which have had a generic influence on twentieth-century architecture are examined. Each entry is fully documented, and the building's present state is given where known. Each building is illustrated with photographs, drawings and plans. An introduction sets the scene, looking back to the engineering achievements of the nineteenth century, to the architects technical inheritance and the aesthetic problems that have occupied architects and theorists of this century. Each decade is prefaced by a short evaluation of the developments within those years. The buildings themselves are presented in clear factual terms, and much hitherto unknown information is given. In addition to the decade chapters, the book provides a useful chronology of buildings erected between 1900 and 1970 and a comprehensive index. It is illustrated with nearly 1,000 monochrome and colour illustrations. The combination of background information with a large body of factual matter makes this book of exceptional value to anyone who is interested in the social and cultural life of the twentieth century. To students and historians it will become an essential reference work. -- from dust jacket.
