Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evening Twilight and the Glorious Dawning The evening brings with it decrepitude and infirm ity. When David said to Barzillai, come and live with me at the palace, Barzillai answered I am this day four-score years old and can I discern be tween good and evil? Can thy servant taste What I eat or What I drink Can I hear any more the voice of singing men and singing women P Let thy servant, I pray thee, turn back that I may die in my own city, to be buried by the grave of my father and of my mother. The desire to die at home, and be interred in the family vault, is generally all of earthly preference that now remains. The pleasures of Sxpectation have ceased; there is nothing to hope for. The clouds return after the rain. The keepers of the house tremble. The strong men bow themselves. The active limbs are feeble. That other disciple, who outran Peter, can no longer creep from his couch any one can bind him, and carry him whither he would not. The grinders cease because they are few, and those that look out of the windows be dark ened The eyes are dim. The landscape is blurred. The World Is misty; the doors are Shut in the streets. The avenues of audience and utterance are closed. Soft sounds can no longer be enjoyed. Whispers of affection are not heard. There is terror in that which is high, and fears are in the way. The mountain side is formidable. The grasshopper is a burden, and desire fails. The frail nature we inherit is eucom passed with a cloud of infirmities, iwhich develop themselves the more painfully, as the sands of life are running out. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Songs of the Twilight and the Dawn Having consented to the venture of its publication, under the auspices Of the Blackburn and District Authors' Society, the author himself Claims no special merit for the contents of the volume beyond saying that his desire has been to appeal more to the hearts Of the general public than to the heads of scholars and critics, who, were they in ignorance of the fact that he had spent the greater part of his life in the Close atmosphere of a cotton factory, and thus been debarred from the facilities for study which are the lot of people more favourably Circumstanced, might extend to him little mercy on account of his lack of culture. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life of Jan Evangelista Purkinje (1787-1869) has fascinated students from many disciplines. Histologists marvel at his early descriptions of cells; physiologists admire his attempts to relate structure to function; pharmacologists view in awe his heroic experiments on self-administered drugs; forensic scientists acknowledge his role in the use of fingerprints for identification; and Czech patriots salute his awakening of pride in their nation. Yet all these achievements followed his initial enquiries into vision. It is this psychological dimension that fostered this collaboration. As the title suggests, the present volume is bifocal. In the narrow sense it refers to Purkinje's studies of vision, but in its broader view it concerns Purkinje's anticipation of neuroscience. Purkinje provided evidence to support both its cellular and its conceptual base. At the cellular level his acute vision is immortalized within our bodies. At the conceptual level, he sought to relate subjective phenomena to their objective underpinnings--to link psychology to physiology. Vision provides a bond that unites psychology and physiology, and it is this bond that was strengthened by Purkinje's enquiries. The authors have tried to provide a context in which Purkinje's descriptions of visual phenomena can be placed. In some cases this exposes clear precursors of research for which Purkinje has been credited. In others, there was nothing to suggest the phenomena that he exposed. The book translates Purkinje's initial masterpiece on subjective vision and places it in the context of emerging views of neuroscience.

As an assassin and second in command of the Watch Guard, he has become a liability. Azrael is betrayed by his team and rescued by the people he’s hunted. He learns his beliefs and purpose are based on lies and has to choose the path of vengeance or the road to redemption. Chasing the Darkness entertains readers who enjoy character-driven stories with twists and turns. Chasing the Darkness is a fast-paced novel with magic, sword fights, and romance that keeps readers turning the page. The underlying themes, besides redemption, include forgiveness, sacrifice, and learning that one’s worth is not defined by one’s past.
