Book Synopsis Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist by : Brant Pitre
Download or read book Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist written by Brant Pitre and published by Image. This book was released on 2011-02-15 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revelatory exploration of the Jewish roots of the Last Supper that seeks to understand exactly what happened at Jesus’ final Passover. “Clear, profound and practical—you do not want to miss this book.”—Dr. Scott Hahn, author of The Lamb’s Supper and The Fourth Cup Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist shines fresh light on the Last Supper by looking at it through Jewish eyes. Using his in-depth knowledge of the Bible and ancient Judaism, Dr. Brant Pitre answers questions such as: What was the Passover like at the time of Jesus? What were the Jewish hopes for the Messiah? What was Jesus’ purpose in instituting the Eucharist during the feast of Passover? And, most important of all, what did Jesus mean when he said, “This is my body… This is my blood”? To answer these questions, Pitre explores ancient Jewish beliefs about the Passover of the Messiah, the miraculous Manna from heaven, and the mysterious Bread of the Presence. As he shows, these three keys—the Passover, the Manna, and the Bread of the Presence—have the power to unlock the original meaning of the Eucharistic words of Jesus. Along the way, Pitre also explains how Jesus united the Last Supper to his death on Good Friday and his Resurrection on Easter Sunday. Inspiring and informative, Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist is a groundbreaking work that is sure to illuminate one of the greatest mysteries of the Christian faith: the mystery of Jesus’ presence in “the breaking of the bread.”
Book Synopsis Real Presence by : Timothy P. O'Malley
Download or read book Real Presence written by Timothy P. O'Malley and published by Ave Maria Press. This book was released on 2021-03-12 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of a first-place award for popular presentation of the faith and second-place in pastoral ministry, catechetical resource from the Catholic Media Association. Many Catholics don’t believe that Jesus is really present in the Eucharist. Rather, they see the bread and wine of Holy Communion as mere symbols of Christ’s body and blood. Is that disbelief just a misunderstanding or is it a blatant rejection of one of the central beliefs of the faith? In Real Presence, University of Notre Dame theologian Timothy P. O’Malley clears up the confusion and shows you how to learn to love God and neighbor through a deeper understanding of the doctrine of real presence. A 2019 study by the Pew Research Center found that almost seventy percent of Catholics don’t believe that Jesus is really present in the Eucharist. O’Malley offers a concise introduction to Catholic teaching on real presence and transubstantiation through a biblical, theological, and spiritual account of these doctrines from the early Church to today. He also explores how real presence enables us to see the vulnerability of human life and the dignity of all flesh and blood. O’Malley leads you to a deeper understanding and renewed faith in Catholic teaching about transubstantiation and real presence by helping you learn how the doctrine of real presence is rooted in divine revelation and how the Church’s teaching regarding transubstantiation is spiritually fruitful for the believer today; how to make your own the doctrine of real presence by worshipping Christ in the Eucharist and therefore making a real assent to real presence; how the Eucharist, although not the exclusive presence of Christ in the Church’s liturgy and mission, is crucial in growing our capacity for recognizing those other presences; and the important relationship between Eucharistic communion and adoration.

Book Synopsis A Ministry of Discernment by : Amanda C. Osheim
Download or read book A Ministry of Discernment written by Amanda C. Osheim and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both the faithful and bishops are called to learn and to teach. Empowered by the Holy Spirit, the faithful of the local church witness to the apostolic tradition with their lives, and so are teachers. Learning to receive and respond to the sense of the faithful is an essential way the bishop grows in his personal ability to teach the church s faith in authentic and meaningful ways. How is the bishop s ministry of discernment formed by spirituality, and what structures strengthen it? Ignatian spirituality and the structures of discernment in the Society of Jesus model ways for bishops to cultivate discernment as a spiritual habit and provide insight for renovating diocesan structures to incorporate discerning dialogue with the faithful. In "A Ministry of Discernment, " Amanda Osheim moves from ecclesiological theory to imagining spiritual practices and church structures in the hope of contributing not only to the academic conversation about the "sensus fidelium" but also to the ways the church practically lives out our response to the Holy Spirit."

Book excerpt: Here is your key to entering fully into the greatest mystery of the Roman Catholic Church: the transformation of bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ. Huge in scope and yet simple and readable, this book covers virtually everything there is to know about the Most Holy Eucharist and it does so while weaving together the harmonious teachings of the Word of God and the Doctors of the Catholic Church, and even the latest insights from Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI. Let this book give you the clarity and strength needed for this spiritual struggle, and you will experience the radiant and unflinching love of our Lord through his Blessed Sacrament. The wise Opus Dei priest Thomas McGovern explains for you: How the saints of the earliest Church instructed their catechumens to approach the Eucharist. Bread and wine: why they were chosen to embody the memorial of our Redemption. The role Christ calls you to play in the mission of his priesthood. Simple ways you can unite your sufferings with Christ at every Mass. How the Mass is a participation in the one and only sacrifice of Christ on Calvary. The three ways in which Christ presents himself in the Eucharist. How Jesus could offer his Body and Blood at the Last Supper when he had not yet died. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass: why the graces flowing from it are even more abundant than those offered through Holy Communion.
Download or read book Eucharistic Blues written by Jim Madden and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-01-24 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the Roman Catholic Church, the golden anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council will not mark a golden 50 years since the Council opened. The promise of Vatican II to become a new Pentecost evaporated into a retreat from the Church when its leaders poorly implement the Councils changes. In a Church, excited by the boldness and the spirit of hope of Pope John XXIII, high hopes and great expectations were replaced by caution and curtailment. As this change in spirit seeped through the Church, the hesitancy of a less emboldened church leadership replaced the strong reforming commitments of Pope John.

Book Synopsis The Church at Worship by : Joseph DeGrocco
Download or read book The Church at Worship written by Joseph DeGrocco and published by LiturgyTrainingPublications. This book was released on 2013 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parishes will find The Church at Worship to be an ideal formation resource as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the promulgation of the Constitution of the Sacred Liturgy. In The Church at Worship, Monsignor Joseph DeGrocco helps students of liturgy, whether in the classroom, the liturgy committee, or on the parish staff, understand the spirituality and theology of the liturgy. As Monsignor Kevin W. Irwin notes in the foreword, the author guides us to view the liturgy from the inside, to allow its words, texts, signs, and gestures to speak to us and for us. From this view, readers are able to see how participation in the liturgy is to be internal and external at the same time. DeGrocco relates that such participation changes us to be at service to the world to build up the kingdom of God.This book is written in short, readable sections that contain discussion questions and suggestions for further reading. Written in such a way, it accommodates both the classroom and the parish. Parishes will find The Church at Worship helpful in the formation of the parish liturgy committee and for deepening the understanding of the liturgy among parish staff. As the material deals with the general and specific aspects of celebrating ritual, it is immediately relevant to the life of the parish. Suggested reading refers the audience to the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, other documents of the Second Vatican Council, and the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

Book Synopsis Work of Love by : Leonard J. DeLorenzo
Download or read book Work of Love written by Leonard J. DeLorenzo and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 2017-02-02 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The saints are good company. They are the heroes of the faith who blazed new and creative paths to holiness; they are the witnesses whose testimonies echo throughout the ages in the memory of the Church. Most Christians, and particularly Catholics, are likely to have their own favorite saints, those who inspire and “speak” to believers as they pray and struggle through the challenges of their own lives. Leonard DeLorenzo’s book addresses the idea of the communion of saints, rather than individual saints, with the conviction that what makes the saints holy and what forms them into a communion is one and the same. Work of Love investigates the issue of communication within the communio sanctorum and the fullness of Christian hope in the face of the meaning—or meaninglessness—of death. In an effort to revitalize a theological topic that for much of Catholic history has been an indelible part of the Catholic imaginary, DeLorenzo invokes the ideas of not only many theological figures (Rahner, Ratzinger, Balthasar, and de Lubac, among others) but also historians, philosophers (notably Heidegger and Nietzsche), and literary figures (Rilke and Dante) to create a rich tableau. By working across several disciplines, DeLorenzo argues for a vigorous renewal in the Christian imagination of the theological concept of the communion of saints. He concludes that the embodied witness of the saints themselves, as well as the liturgical and devotional movements of the Church at prayer, testifies to the central importance of the communion of saints as the eschatological hope and fulfillment of the promises of Christ.
